Unpredictible Wobble Bolts

Archive: 6 posts

In regards to a recent thread I started asking for help on emitter sync properties, I'm trying to find a workaround. But even the workaround is causing problems, and this time I don't think its because of user error.

I won't go into all the details of what I'm trying to do, as most of that is explained in the other thread, but what's happening here is that I have some wheels set up on wobble bolts. The idea is that the wheels are supposed to rotate 180 degrees so that a mag switch on the bottom rotates up to reach a mag key at the top.

The wobble bolts on the wheels are rigged with a proxy switch set to direction, so none of them should be moving until the player activates the proxy switch.

I have four of these setup close to each other. Every time I unpause (i'm floating in the air, so none of the proxy switches should be activating), one of the wheels rotates and stops there until the proxy switch is activated. Even more bizarre is that when I pause-rewind-play, I get different results. Sometimes it rotates all the way up, sometimes a third of the way, sometimes halfway, sometimes in just some odd angle, and sometimes it actually stays where its supposed to.

Has anyone else experienced this, and is there a way to work around it? It seems like this has to be a glitch since I get different results each time.

Thanks,
Justin

Yeah your not suppose to pause on wobble bolts, because when you unpause they will act like that was the starting point, that's what happens with my wobble bolts, to fix it I just set the wobble time very long, maybe 3 seconds, and I wait for the perfect time to pause them back to their original spot, maybe this is a glitch but I doubt it.2008-11-12 02:40:00

Glitch or no glitch, its kind of asinine, considering that many times you'll need to have the editor paused while you're working so that things you've setup don't start falling and causing problems.

Perhaps I'll change my wheel setup to pistons...

EDIT: By the way, I hope I didn't sound like a jerk, Whale. I'm frustrated with the editor, not you, as you're usually the first one to give me a tip.

I have noticed that sometimes pistons, winches, and wobble bolts move even while the game is paused. Bear in mind they aren't actually moving but when you unpause the game they may only move half of the desired distance or perhaps move an inch or so then pause only to eventually reverse direction. I believe this only happens when you pause the creator and the item in question is somewhere in the middle of its animation.
The only reason that only one of your wobble bolts is doing this must be because you somehow forgot to wire it into the correct circuit. Perhaps you accidentally forgot to wire it, or wired it into a matching key and switch?
Check and recheck all your wiring and perhaps even try deleting and rebuilding a new wobble bolt. There are times when you just have to rebuild.

I actually put a completely new bolt on and reattached everything with the same result. I'm doing it with pistons now and its working better, so I'm just going to avoid wobble bolts from now on until I need them for something.

Thanks for the advice!

I can't explain why the one wobble bolt is acting up but I have noticed the half movement and then reversal. It's also important to determine where the "top" of the item you're moving is. When viewing the angle of the wobble bolt setting, take note where it actually stops and reverses. This may be hard to do with a wheel though. Once you figured that out you can get the proper settings.

Usually when you unpause the game after installing a tool it takes the system a few movements to get into it's proper motion. After that, things work perfectly. This is especially true when using "sync". If you have 3 items set on different sync times, the first two with the lower sync time need to move their course before the third will even begin to move. This goes for the whole level and doesn't apply to just one object.
