Anyone able to help with music? (:

So i'v got a concept in my head for a level I want to make. Since I am partial to snow, and everything about winter, I want to recreate a way better version of my original LBP1 level. The one thing I think I need to get it started is the level music which is always hard for me to do. When I got the music for a level, I can start to better see how I want my level and what it's going to be like. So I am wondering two things::

1) Can music be made and saved for reuse

2) Can anyone do me a cover of this song. Without the lyrics, i'd love the piano rendition of this for level music.

Yes. Music is treated the same as any other creation in the game. It can be saved, shared, and even tweaked by other creators you send it to.

Not sure I'd have enough time right now, and to be honest, the instruments we have don't lend very well to this kind of music. I'll muck around quickly with it to see if I can come up with something decent, but if I don't reply again to this thread by tomorrow morning, it likely means I feel I can't do the song justice and that it's a lost cause.

Okay, I've done some work on this for you. I think it's a manageable song and the basics are already there. With a lot of work this could be a great song... as it is, it's good enough to have as BG level music.

So here's the deal. I'll agree to work on this a bit more for you, but I'm going to use this as a bit of a teaching example that you and others who have trouble with this kind of thing can start to look at the music sequencer a bit differently, and try to understand how powerful a tool it is if you spend some time with it. It really is the kind of tool that with some effort and a passion for understanding, can actually be learned and put to good use by people who aren't as musical as others are fortunate to be.

It's not going to make musicians out of anyone, but it can certainly provide you the opportunity to start looking at it in a common sense and practical way and give you an incentive to create neat little tunes for your levels. You just really need to play with this tool as much as you would the logic tools or any other tool we have access too.

I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but I'll bet good money that more requests like these will begin popping up in the near future, and other than the very few people who have the time or desire to help others out... the responses will begin to become less frequent with more requests. That's why I'd like to use this as a good example of what can be done and maybe give you the creative desire, courage, excitement, whatever, to start taking these projects into your own hands and giving them a go. Even if you show that you've tried, people will be more willing to come in and help you figure things out, tweak or fix them, or full on rip them down and remake them with/for you altogether... like anything else in LBP.

Deal?

Sorry for the late reply (Got sucked into a LBP2 phase and just spent the past 6 hours playing it non-stop. ) And sounds like a plan. Also, I will give full credits when the level is made, and it seems like a great idea to have it as a teaching tool. I'd definitely love to get some background and tutorials on how to really use the music tools in the game.

And thanks a tonne for putting the time into this, it's much appreciated. I'm currently grabbing up 100% and acing each level in LBP2, to gather up more materials and such so I can start work on my level.

Okay, so the song is done now... sorry it took as long as it did but I've had little time to work on it.

What I've done is recreate the song part-for-part so it perfectly matches the original song. One of the problems with using songs like these is that they are not always "level friendly"... meaning that without the words and lyrical melody, they just sound weird as BG level music. This one might be somewhat of an exception to the rule, as it's just a really pretty song and well structured.

So, as per your request the basic music part is done. I've taken the liberty to also add a few of my own little pieces (kind of like harmonies) that go over top of the melody to help flesh out the sound a bit seeing as there is no vocal melody in this version (don't worry though, these pieces are burried low in the mix, and you can easily pull them out if you don't like them). I've also added a light kick drum to help drive the song a little bit, but it's also low in the mix and a very soft sounding kick... nothing harsh. The song is basically done, but I do want to go in and add a few more elements to help fill out the sound and "build" the song as it goes along to keep it from sounding boring and repetative.

Here's the part where your assignment comes in. What? Oh.... I didn't tell you there'd be homework? Oops!

Actually, it'll be painless. You need to add my PSN to your list- same as my username here. Then, you'll need a copy of the song to sit down with me in online create to listen to while we are creating, be it on an Ipod, computer, CD player... whatever. I'm suggesting this because I'm going to actually show you how to pull the notes out of the song yourself and use the sequencer so that in future you can do this on your own. Once we spend about 20 minutes going over this (or longer if you prefer), I'll throw the song over to you and you can decide whether you want to keep everything in I've added, or pull parts out and just keep the very basic melody going.

I see we are only a few hours drive from each other, so coordinating times to meet online shouldn't be too hard as we are in the same time zone. I'm available most evenings except Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays which is when I have jam rehearsals.

I'm also planning on publishing a Youtube video that will go in tandem with the creation of this song, to try and illustrate to folks how they can do this themselves, Also, I will publish this in a standalone music level (though it won't be copyable... only YOU will be able to use it in your level - unless you wish to allow anyone to use it... I'll leave that up to you.) for people to go in and listen to the song themselves after watching the video if they wish to.

Cheers!
