I noticed a new trend that I think must stop now.

Archive: 15 posts

Hi all,

I've been lurking alot in the level showcase section in order to queue levels and play them later when I get home.
LBP.me is a really awesome website and it faciliate our lives quite alot. But even with that super website, I am seeing an horrible trend in the level showcase: PEOPLE DON'T PUT PICTURES OF THEIR LEVELS IN THEIR THREAD.

That should be in the basics. Especially if you want feedback and you're participating in the F4F it should be a given! A screenshot is what attracts someone the fastest. Don't ask yourself why real videogames' hype are built on releasing screenshots and videos, it's because that's the most effective way. You want plays? you want feedback? put screenshots in the your opening post.

With LBP1 I could understand it wasn't a must because one needed to take a picture, export it, save it on some external device, put in on their PC and then host it on the internet. But now with LBP.me EVERYBODY can put screenshots easily. You only need to take the picture in-game, upload it from in-game (press Square on the picture in your popit) and then voil?, your picture is right there on LBP.me for you to use!

It's so easy and it's so effective to attrack people that nobody should pass over putting some photos in their thread. On my part it's going to be extremely simple how I will F4F. There's alot of levels out there and I have no time to try everything, search for videos and whatnot. I will only play levels that are under F4F + are having screenshots in the opening post.

discuss.

This is just because of the new guys, they will surely get the hang of it soon.
I get your point but those who have real interest in the game and creating will stop this faster then you expect. And this will surely speed up the process

Yes, I understand the "new guy" reason. Perfectly respectable. That's also why I made this thread you know. 2011-01-27 19:28:00

Agreed with you, Ranger. As someone else that lurks the showcase I've noticed that as well. Promises of good, fun game play but no screen shots to wet the appetite.

Heck, even back in the days lbp1 quite a few of the threads would have pictures added, if not at the time of the original post they were surely edited in later on.

And now that we have lbp.me. It will be far easier for even players without flash drives or other means of getting the pics from ps3 to pc to get the photos of their levels online.

Taking the new guy factor into account, maybe a little guide should be put up in the showcase detailing how to get photos of your levels from LBP1/2 to LBPC through lbp.me.

I agree. People like to see pics or video, so they can see if the level is something that might interest them. (a picture is worth a thousand words) I also fully support F4F. I will always use F4F when posting a new level, because I think it's a great feature. It helps us all become better, and it forces me to try some levels I wouldn't have tried otherwise.
A lot of times I'm pleasantly surprised.

Why aren't the links to lbp.me for photo viewing good enough?2011-01-28 03:25:00

They won't get plays from me if there are no images.

Putting images in your level thread = more plays!
It's as simple as that.
Now that we have LBP.me, you dont even need a flash drive or belong to an image hosting site!

I don't think images @ LBP.me helps much.
I am not going to click into that LBP.me page to see them, because the thread hasn't caught my attention with shiny images!

Pics in your thread in a few easy steps.
1) In your level, take a photo with your popit, press Square, then Upload.
2) Find your LBP.me level page. Right click the photo, view in new window/tab.
3) Copy the URL/address/link, click this button http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/LBPC-Style/editor/insertimage.png on your thread, then paste the link into that.
Done.

I am glad I saw this. Thank you for this advice as I will be using it in my future levels. I upload and transfer pictures the old fashion way (from PS3 to memory stick to photo site to message board). I would have never realized I can now do this...and it is a lot easier and less hassle.

Making the level thread was one of the funnest things about my level, I liked making everything all prettiful.
Screenshots can make me play a level even if they don't look too great, I just want to satisfy my curiosity about what the rest of the level looks like. So yeah, include pictures.

Why aren't the links to lbp.me for photo viewing good enough?

From the players' POV: It's an extra 2 links that have to be traversed before finding out if I'm interested (and if I want to see larger screens it's a further link on top of that for each image). In other words, it's an extra barrier that you place between players and finding info about your level, something akin to placing it:

on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the Leopard'
The level showcase is about promotion and selling yourself. A text advert is not as compelling as a graphical advert, it's as simple as that. If nothing else for the fact that there is nothing in the level showcase thread to grab you, just a brief description.

With the volume of levels in this game and in this site's level showcase (and of course the high proportion of absolutely terrible levels), you can't expect people to go the extra mile to go and find out if you level is actually going to be one of the few that stand out, so you need to grab them by the balls an show them why your level is worth playing.

Possibly more significantly, it indicates a lack of effort on the part of the creator. I'd hope for someone to have spent a good 20-200 hours on a level (depending on what it is). If the 15 minutes of effort to write a compelling showcase entry and link some images is too much for them, I assume that a similar lack of effort and care has gone into their level creation. At that point I won't even bother to click the LBP.me link.

From a creator's standpoint, you don't actually know which are the most prominent images on LBP.me are, so you're putting your advertising in the hands of players, many of whom will just upload closeups of their sackboys.

I always upload pictures, it definatly brightens up the thread, makes people want to play it more. Another thing I'd really like to stress is proper English. Seeing "This level is good because" rather than "this lvl is good bc0s" makes it a lot nicer. As rtm223 said, it's about selling yourself. If you don't do that right, don't complain when it doesn't work.2011-01-28 16:44:00

If everyone made a post for a new level they made, then there would be 3 million some odd different threads.... Therefore i think if you really feel the need to post your level, you should at least have some awesome screen shots of your level, with a description, and a reason why a sackboy would want to visit your level! or if you needed some help, and wanted to show the results of the help..2011-01-29 02:25:00
