Is There a Definitive Hologram Material FAQ?

Archive: 4 posts

The game gives little to no information about how Hologram Material works or what the possibilities are, yet many creators here seem to have dozens of uses for it. Is there a "go to" place that clearly explains what this new material is capable of?2011-01-27 17:03:00

The hologram material can have a lot of uses. You can make HUD and other UI elements with it (like a menu, decorations, or use them as invisible tools.

It's a "tweakable" material, meaning that after you place it in the world, you can hover over it with your cursor and push the Square button to pull up a menu. The menu lets you tweak its color, as well as how bright it is, and how fast the texture on it animates. And because its tweakable, you can connect switches to it to power it on or off.

You can do very complicated things with it. But you can do really easy stuff also. Here's some examples to give you an idea.

Make sure you press Start and put a check next to the "Preview" mode at the bottom of the screen. This lets you see the hologram material as it would appear to someone playing your level.

You can activate it like a light. Hook up a push switch to one. Hover your cursor over the holo material and push Square to tweak the hologram to be red when its "off" and green when its "on". So its red by default until you step on the push switch and it turns green.

Now let's make it appear out of nowhere. Set its brightness levels for its "on" and "off" settings. Turn the brightness to 0% when it's "off" and the brightness to 50% when its "on". Then by default its invisible until you step on the switch and it pops into existence.

Because its also a material, you can connect tools to it just like any other material. For instance, if you wanted to make a bee fly over a flower in a circle, you could make a hologram rectangle, glue the bee to one end, and attach a motor bolt to the other end, bolting it into the background. Change the visibility to 0%, and now you have a bee seemingly flying in a loop over your flower. You know its really just on a "clock hand" so to speak, but the player doesn't.

Another great thing about it is that it passes through other objects like gas (without killing anybody!). You don't have to worry about it colliding into anything, even other hologram material. It floats as well. The only way it moves is if you setup some tools to make it move (like the bee example above).

If you're familiar with using the logic tools, check out this video tutorial that shows you how to make a mouse cursor and menu system with holo material: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nKPkZE1mIY.

I hope this gives you some insight. : )

There has been numerous mentions of using holo to make HUD's (eg life bars) - how is this usually achieved? Is the lifebar (for example) made up of lots of little bits of halo, activated as needed; but then what about the border/background etc? (as it always seems to look like a bright light to me.)

Also, holo and sticker interaction - how does it work? solid black stickers just seem to block that portion out (equiv of 0% brightness) while other stickers can barely be seen on it?
Is there a way to use holo to have a stickered message pop up and then disappear, or does such have to be done another way; and any way to achieve this without it looking like a light?

for the talk of animations using holo - how many layers (ie frames) can you have stacked in a pile - is it the same as the default layer amount?

cheers
