Adventures In Wonderland -Project Announcement

Archive: 14 posts

So, firstly and foremost I would like to begin by stating that I am not overly active on the forums, most of you will probably never even played the very few levels one of my Psn accounts have published. However I take great pride in those that I used to publish back in the heyday of lbp1 and would like to state that the level of polish I intend on adding to my new levels is by neccessity, going to be very high. Being a games programmer by trade I'd like to think those skills will be transferred. I state this as I would hate for any projects I throw up here to be seen as good ideas that probably won't make the cut.

Anywho! That out the way I would like to announce that work has now begun on a series of levels based upon the fantasy of Adventures in Wonderland (otherwise known as Alice in wonderland). Those of you whom both followed and enjoyed the many incarnations of the tale, especially for those burton lovers out there, will hopefully be interested in the levels. They are based along the idea that the universe of wonderland that exists after Alices visit in the books and then again in the recent film persists within it's own time frame. This means it continues existing even without her being there as such I would like to explore tales within this setting that maybe are not directly related to Alice. These will also be taking on the darker feel that Burton brought to the tale.

These levels will include alot of the memorable characters from the films and the books. Some will play out as full blown storys, requiring player interaction to progress, others as smaller mini games.

As far as aid goes? Well I'm open to help from any angle, I'm not completely confident in my musical or story abilities as I could be, so those areas would defiantly benifit from help. I will update with a published demo from one if the levels in a week or so after I've got it to a standard that deserves to be seen, just to help people visualise the concept. After that il look into help with anything anyone believes they can bring to the project.

Ok so ive finished the framework of 3 levels so far that im now in the process of building on, However my first question to the community is mainly... whats a more prefered method of level combinations, Level linked and locked levels, or open levels?

See the dilema is more that each level is a zone in itself and not a continuation of the previous which leads me to think they should all be open, but then again i would also like to preserve some semblence of story... so advice?

Open levels are probably the way to go here. Locked levels imply some sort of continuity, and since it appears that there isn't a progressive story, open seems like the best choice. If you have an absolute beginning, however, maybe the player should be required to experience that one first and then acquire all the keys to the subsequent levels upon completing it. Level links also imply continuity but I think the bigger issue would be the length. It would appear that you have a few levels set up so being able to choose which I want to play would be preferable--at least it would be for me.
Good luck with the game; I look forward to playing it!

Woooo...long break, but anyway, ive finished the level hub and begun progress on three of the levels, i find working on each at seperate times better than working on just one till i grow sick of it. SO heres a few preview photos, as well as some of the level hub.

With the Hub what ive decided to do is just use level links as rabbit holes, but also leave the levels open to be access individually without having to go through the hub, i believe this is possible?

So, you're another one of those people who prefer to take their time to polish their levels to meet their high standards, eh? Nice to meet you. I'm another such person.

Anyways, I'll check this level out once I have some time away from working on my own Metroidvania-style platforming project.

Looks nice so far.
If you need help with characters i could make art of them for cutscenes or whatever you'd need em for.

The rabbit holes will be level links to the various levels, however right now none of the levels are at a stage id be happy to publish hence , no rabbit holes.

Ive updated the original level with a notice for this now.

I'm excited to see this play out! I'm a very big fan of Alice in Wonderland (more-so the books) so I'll be itching to play. Ironically, I'm working on my own set of AiW levels. Thankfully though they are a completely different style.2011-02-20 12:41:00

sounds interesting. to answer the earlier question, yes you can have the levels available for play directly and still have links to them in your hub.2011-02-22 23:19:00
