How do you guys stay motivated?
Archive: 11 posts
There seems to be a recurring pattern with me I start making a level for roughly 2 or 3 days then I just give up so my question is: How do you keep motivated when building a level? | 2011-01-27 14:38:00 Author: MasterCreator Posts: 464 |
Ambitions. Plan ahead, visualize exactly what you want the end result to be. Never start creating head first without a well laid out plan, otherwise exactly what you said will happen more often than not. I suggest joining a project instead of doing all by yourself if you feel overwhelmed. That way even if you get bored, your efforts will not go to waste. Did I mention I have a project going on? Currently I'd love to have more level / object designers. Great chance to be part of something big. | 2011-01-27 14:43:00 Author: Linque Posts: 607 |
Hmm.... If I dont like the way the level turned out, I delete what I dont like and start again, knowing that the more I improve what I dont like, the better it will be! One of my Beta levels got completely scrapped because of one bounce pad Keep trying, and Im sure it will be great! | 2011-01-27 14:44:00 Author: grayspence Posts: 1990 |
Entering competitions helps me stay focused and motivated. (Not enough to actually publish anything, though. ) | 2011-01-27 14:47:00 Author: Rogar Posts: 2284 |
Competitions help. Planning ahead, making sketches, mainly just having a concept to work towards. I find if I start without a general idea of what I'm trying to do, I just end up with a mess and abandon it. Smoking lots helps too Perhaps you should try working within your own attention span? If your attention always wanes after 2 days, make some minigames or something. Once you've got a couple of things published, you'll be that much more eager to make more! | 2011-01-27 14:50:00 Author: Bovrillor Posts: 309 |

If you write down ideas first, filter through them, pick only the few ones that you think matter the most, not all of them, then make a few sketches on paper, research how things you want to make work or look in the real world, etcetera... This will save you a lot of effort beforehand; the creation process in LBP can be tiring and wear you out when stuff becomes difficult or, on the other hand, boring and routine. Preparation like this will give you a firm overview on the project you are about to undertake so that you can conclude on how much time this will take you and whether you are able to invest such time. And if not, adjust the scope of your project (less detail, less size, less complex logic) or cut it up in well rounded portions for later levels. In art school they taught me to never start painting in the upper left corner of the canvas, end up in the bottom right corner and then call it finished. Instead, I had to work in layers of detail using the whole of the canvas, so that at all time I had a clear view of direction or even call it quits and still have a painting to show for it. Another idea is to team up with other people and take on portions of a project instead of doing everything by yourself. | 2011-01-27 14:54:00 Author: Antikris Posts: 1340 |
Only thing I do to stay motivated is keep on going and never stop, that and so coffee XD | 2011-01-27 15:25:00 Author: Arnald23 Posts: 1843 |
Interesting - everyone seems to be saying plan ahead. That's what stops me in my tracks funnily enough. With my current level I'm just making it up as I go along. I chose a theme and just ran with it. This is the first time I didn't plan ahead and it's going really well. Sure, I'm on here all the time asking questions on how to do things - but my level is going well and Im enjoying the learning process. If you don't enjoy it, don't bother. It's the same as acing and getting 100% on the story levels. A lot of people find it a chore and frustrating, I'm really enjoying it. Make a level because you want to, not because you feel you should. Maybe it's not motivation you need - just some inspiration. | 2011-01-27 15:43:00 Author: NoddingPenguin Posts: 71 |
Tasty snacks and plenty of diet coke. Just have fun! If it isn't fun to do, then it probably won't end up that much fun anyway. | 2011-01-27 15:49:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |
I take mine in steps. Make short goals and have several more ready in the back of my mind. For example, I had a rough Idea of what I wanted to do with my level. Side scrolling vehicle, underground a variety of tools and abilities on the ship. First, design the ship. Second add the magnetic lift. Third Make the bombs. Fourth make the bomb dispenser Fifth add the rocket launcher Sixth make the rocket reload dispenser Etc... This way, I'm half way through one step and already looking forward to the next part. | 2011-01-27 16:04:00 Author: Biv Posts: 734 |
