Platform Levels vs. Other Genres

Archive: 18 posts

Hi to all,

I did not see this topic posted so I would like to start up a conversation.

I am recently new at creating levels. I started in LBP1 around last year. I like the Platform concept. I think they are fun to create and fun to play. I like other games as well, but I do not have any desire to create them (at least not right now.) I intend to create some Platforming Levels in LBP2 because it is what I like. There are a lot of interesting gadgets and gizmos in LBP2 that I can see me making which will expand my Platform level making skills. I may try at other things as well if I can come up with something, but my main focus will most likely be platforming adventures.

My question is this: With the different types of games that can be created in LBP2, are Platform-based levels going to be obsolete, ignored and/or frowned upon because you can do other things in LBP2? Thoughts???

I don't think so. Right now I think there's an equal selection of platforming and other types of levels on the cool pages. A few good platforming levels out are Clockworx 2 and Islands of Birds. I'm making a platforming level now. With all the new gadgets theres plenty of new things to do.2011-01-27 01:49:00

Platforming levels are still the heart of LittleBigPlanet, and I honestly would prefer a well made platformer over some shooter/top-down whatever any day. 'Tis why I got LBP1, as well as LBP2 in the first place, to play and create platformers.2011-01-27 01:55:00

Platformers... will become a genere that is there, but there will be fewer of them. In LBP1 it was almost all platforming, and now they will be lesser, but only slightly.2011-01-27 01:55:00

I think that there will always be an equal selection of all genres in the community. Everyone is going to make what they are good at making or have cool ideas for. If you are good at or have cool ideas for platforming elements then do that. I enjoy playing platformers the most. That's just me. They will never be obsolete. They will never be frowned upon. No genre ever will, hence the millions of games there are across the globe. Everybody is going to play what they want. So no matter what you create, you will have an audience. Such is the beauty of LBP2.2011-01-27 01:59:00

Platforms will always be my favorite to play... Pretty sure thats why we all bought LBP1 to begin with.. PS3 Needed a cool platformer, and LBP delivered.2011-01-27 02:34:00

Yup. Same here.
Platformers take longer to make which is why there arn't many about in LBP2.
All the new tools (essentially giving sackboy new moves, high jump/hud/etc) will only expand platformers on LPB2!

The platform level will never be obsolete. But with all these new possibilities I will not be making one for a while, nor will I be playing one.2011-01-27 16:32:00

No interest? Really?

I don't really care whether a level is platforming or not, I'll still play it. I'm excited to see shooters, racers and other stuff, but I'm also excited to see how people use the new tools to make platformers even better than they were LBP1. LBP2 is about ALL genres including platformers, it isn't exlcusive to just platformers or just other genres.

Nope. If I want to play a shooter (which I don't, cuz I don't like 'em anyways) I'd play a shooter. If I want to play a racer, I'll play a real racing game, not a top down wannabe racing game. If I want to play an RPG, I'll play a full featured RPG built in an engine specifically for RPGs, not a hacked together derivative or wnannabe RPG built in a system meant for platforming. If I want to play a fighter (which I wouldn't cuz they don't interest me at all) I'd play it in a game specifically designed for it, with tighter controls and full combos, not a system hacked together to simulate a fighter.

I like platformers, adn that's what I want to see and play. If they imaginative and creative, they can be a source of endless fun, for me. Oh, and for the sake of argument, I am interested in seeing more films and cutscenes made in LBP2... But other genres? Nope, no interest at all.

In fact it'll really bug me to load up a level that isn't defined as well as it could be, only to find out it's not a platformer, but a bad ripoff or remake of some ancient game.

We are still in a platforming game and it's platformers that are the easiest to do and easiest to make into a compelling experience. Don't worry, it will not be obsolete AT ALL.2011-01-27 18:26:00

Fair point, albeit a little pessimistic to think you're never going to play a fun racer, shooter etc in LBP2. I think the best levels in any of the genres that are now being explored are going to be ones that actually embrace and exploit the uniqueness of LBP rather than try and force a square peg. There's tons of racing games out there. There's only one place where I can drive a banana.

Pessimistic much? It wouldn't be long until some creator pushes the bar higher in another genre, and will most likely change your mind. The game has only been released and we haven't seen 5% of the game's capabilities. I don't think it'll be long until someone finds a way to make a decent 3d racer.

Platforming is always going to be what lbp is based around. The Story levels contained other genres, but it was all held together by a wonderful platforming experience. With all the new tools, such as grappling hook, sackbots, grabinator, creatinator; platforming is gone in the opposite direction from obsolete.

Platformers will never die on LBP. I think once the novelty wears off a little you'll see a more even balance of genres. In the meantime I'll play whatever the community throws at me.2011-01-27 23:40:00

Like I said in the beginning, I like the platforming concept and I generally get ideas from that concept. Thanks for all of your input. Even if they were frowned upon or inferior because of the possibilities of the new genres that can be created, I would still create them because that is what I am good at. But, I am not knocking on any of the other genres. Any genre is good to me if it is fun.2011-01-28 00:48:00

I got the game because I saw the cutest sackboy that someone had knitted by hand. (If you saw it you would go ga-ga too!) I found out it was from a game, so I checked it out! It sounded fun, and now I'm hooked!2011-01-29 03:03:00
