The Spire Part 1 F4F

Archive: 20 posts

I posted this earlier, but it wasn't an F4F. I will play and review whatever levels anyone wants if they look at mine, I'm more than happy to do that if you guys help me out!

Hey guys!

So, I just published my second level and it is much different from my first. I wanted something more concise and story oriented, so I based this one of off a sketch I did a few years back that I titled The Spire. Just as a simple synopsis you play as Walt who wakes up in an alley with his head spinning, not sure of what is going on. You try to figure out what has happened, but something isn't right. The looming figure of the Spire is ever present and something is following you in the shadows. I'm really looking for some people to just give me some feedback and let me know what they think because I'm really wanting to continue this story and flesh it out more. Just as a warning, it isn't a point frenzy and it is pretty easy. This first part is to set up the story line a bit, hook players in, and is more puzzle oriented and cinematic if anything. So if some people could just check it out and let me know what you think, I would really appreciate it. Not looking for hearts or positive reviews, just some feedback. Thanks a lot, everybody!

I really liked this level. The atmosphere was great, the visuals were great, and the gameplay was fun. It was a tad on the short side, but I don't guess it really matters since it's multi-part. You put a lot of work into it and it showed. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for part two.

If you could give me some feedback on my level I'd really appreciate it.

Maybe some of the camera angles could change, but apart from that the level is great. I'm looking forward to playing Part Two, maybe in part two players use their on initiative to find their way around. Just a suggestion? 2011-01-27 08:40:00

So, something like it isn't as guided (that they have to do A to get to point B), more like they have to find their own way around? Also, which camera angles in particular? I was a little worried about the fire escape angles and how they would come off, but I wanted some of the cinematic angles to carry into the gameplay.

Yeah, Less guidance would make it much more challenging/interesting, maybe not showing us exactly what we have to do would stretch the gameplay a little longer. I had trouble with the fire escape stairs things, and swinging across the billboards. When you make part two, if you decide to add more action make sure we still get a story line and maybe add some flashbacks and what not?

Really liked the feel of this level, a gritty noir atmosphere. Sort of Sin City without the excessive violence.
I liked the dark visuals and the cutscenes in the bar.
Those dark creatures scuttling about provide a good hook. I like levels that tell a story, and I'm looking forward to part 2.

I think you could remove some of the clues (like 'climb upon along the streetlights&apos figuring stuff like that out could be part of the fun.
And maybe you shouldn't let the camera tilt, like it does in some scenes. I think the mood of the level doesn't need that extra dynamic, but that's just my 5cts.

If you're up for 4F4 please try one of my Deliver me from Eve levels.

Great atmosphere you have created here.
Story, lighting, and visuals were good, but I feel you should cut back on some of the angles on some of the cameras. Perhaps make then more extreme when there is an element of danger.
And an option for skipping the text if possible for replayability.
Nice work, will be looking foward to part two.

Thanks for the feedback guys. The in game camera angles seem to be the only really issue, that and directly telling people what to do. I'm working on fleshing out the story and working on a concept right now, so I'll make sure to take those things into consideration when I start Part 2. Thanks for all of the feedback.

Also, @pickled-punk, I qued one of your levels, I'll check it out later tonight.

I must admilt that this level was much better than I first expected.

The graphics were really good, I bar was really good, with the gas on the ceiling a nice effect. The Graffling hook parts were good and the camera made it easy to see where the next bit was, so well don on those things.
For Part two, try and add, a bit more diversity with the graffling hook (like pulling down bridges etc.) This would send the level up and beyond.

I would like feedback on this level, if you please https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=45733-Topsy-Turvy-Techno-Town&p=747727

This level was outstanding! It really took off for me when you get the grappling hook and escape out the window. I think your camera work was superb, I wouldn't change a thing about it. The only real suggestion I can say is that it's way too easy to get wedged in between the fire escape rails as you work your way up. If you could possibly add something to those pieces that would prevent that from happening, this level would be perfect. I've hearted this level, and really hoping for a part 2!

If you're still good for F4f, could you check out my level Zen Mastermind and leave feedback in its thread at https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=45106-Zen-Mastermind-by-Elijah_Caine? I'd appreciate it!

Loved this!

Im a big Film Noir fan so i really appreciated the atmosphere you managed to create, kinda reminds me of Blade Runner!

Your camera work was really nice too, made the platforming feel quite unique. Despite the comments saying how they find the grappling hard, i thought it was fine, and i loved swinging across that billboard. The RPG aspect with the old man at the door was a nice addition too.

Not much can be improved in Part 1, but in future parts it would be great to see multiple sack characters that each give you bits of information to help you along your way, maybe some could point you to shorter routes than others and the like!

The sound scaping was brilliant too (im assuming you did the sirens and car sounds, forgive me if they come with the background), definitely added to the mood.

I cannot wait for part 2, keep up the good work!

If you could check out the game i made i would be very grateful! Link is in my sig.

Thanks for the great feedback @Steve. I'll definitely take into consideration the multiple sackbots idea, I'm glad to see you liked that aspect of it.

I've qued up your level and I'll check it out soon.

Hey HughDawg,

A group here tried to do a three-player run of your level, but unfortunately we found it not very multiplayer-friendly and could not figure out how to jump out of the window.

First off, we agree with the above that the visuals were excellent and gave off a strong noire feel, which felt entirely at home with the plot; however, we did not feel the story and gameplay matched it in terms of quality.

Given high expectations by the level description, we were surprised by the strange sequence of events initiated by the protagonist -- walking into a bar, asking for information, talking to an old man again, jumping out a window in a room with decoy switches...

Grabbing the chair to initiate conversation is less intuitive than simple proximity or sitting on the chair. The stairs in the bar were also very awkward to navigate, as stairs always are. Also we obviously couldn't figure out how to jump out the window, even though we'd pulled both the real and the decoy switch es (unless there were three switches...?).

It may just be something about the camera being too tight to handle three Sackpeople well, since some other the other comments say you made things too obvious, but the upstairs bar room was frustrating enough to make us quit. Perhaps if you PM me the correct way to solve the puzzle we'll smack our foreheads, finish the level and change our minds?

Pretty good story level! I enjoyed this and would've played more, so keep it up. I would like to comment on two things specifically... The camera work overall is great, but there are a number of fast flip-flops that I found disorienting. I'd recommend getting rid of either the funky camera angles or the quick changes, because combining both can be a little nauseating. I thought the dialogue stuff was pretty good too, with the exception of the parts that were just banal for a sackperson. I have to hit a switch. I hit a switch, did it do something? It might have done something. etc. I just thought that was unnecessary among the rest of the text in the game, which was otherwise meaningful and relevant. I get to be a little nit-picky with feedback for a level like this cause I thought it was great otherwise. Hope you do more with this story!2011-04-13 06:14:00
