How do you use the new Rating System?

Archive: 21 posts

In LBP1, rating a level was forced upon you. Upon exiting the level, you were prompted to give a level a rating of 1 to 5 stars.

Now, in LBP2 it's changed so that you don't actually have to rate, and if you do, it's either a good rating or a bad rating. Much like Youtube. (Thumbs up, thumbs down.)

For me, when I watch a video on youtube, if I really liked it, I give it a thumbs up. If I didn't like it, I just didn't like it and then I leave the page. Because, for me, the thumbs down button is for stuff that is just plain garbage, or is undeserving of it's rating at that moment. (Say, a video asking everyone to favourite, like, comment, and spread.)

Now, in LBP2, I've been doing the same. If I hop into a level, and really enjoy it, then, yes, I'll give it a happy face and maybe a heart. But, if I hop onto a level that isn't good enough for a happy face, but also isn't deserving of a sad face, I don't rate it at all. I think, the creator obviously put some time and effort into this level, so why rate it down?

But, say, I hop onto a level that is titled "hert this leevl 4 fre przrs!!!!!!!!" then I'm definitely going to give it the rating it deserves, a big, fat, sad face.

So, I was wondering, how do you guys use this rating system? Do you just sad face any level that you don't give a happy face to? Do you use it the same way as me? If so, why?

If I didn't like the level, it's a sad face.
If I didn't like the level because I don't like that genre, I just leave it.
If I can't make up my mind, I leave it.
And I give happy faces to levels that have me in them.
I give happy faces to levels that I like. *winkwink* highlight.

if it's a level I disliked or couldn't complete, because of flaws or fundamental problems with the playability, I rate it Sad face and I leave a comment as to what I didn't like about it. If it's one that I don't like because it's not my cup of tea (dont like the genre, or just didn't do much for me but is technically sound) I dont rate or leave a comment, and if it's one I really liked I give it a Happy face and a comment. I dont rate without a comment, and I don't comment without a rate.2011-01-26 22:02:00

Interesting topic, I wondered how others rate as well. I'm very similar to you Cog.

If I like the level, it gets a smiley.
If I like the concept, but not the execution, it gets a smiley face, as well as a comment saying so.
Vice versa gets a smiley as well as a comment saying so.
If I disliked the level because it wasn't my taste or it was just bad, I leave it. I stand by the "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" policy.
If the level is H4H or whatever, I would rate with a frown, but seeing as how I don't play those levels....
If the level is incomplete-able, I leave it alone and leave a comment saying where I got stuck or whatever and tell the person to message me when they fix it because generally I'll want to play it again to see the entire level.

Hearts in the first game acted as a "6th Star", but now it's a super smiley face or a bookmark. :]

Here is my incredibly complicated system:

If I like it, it gets a smiley face.
If I dislike it, it gets a sad face.
If I think it's okay but nothing special, I leave it.

It's pretty much the same as I gave star ratings in LBP1. 1-2 stars is a sad face, 3 stars is no face, 4-5 stars is a happy face. If I don't like the genre I probably won't play the level anyway, but if I do I can still appreciate whether it's good or not.

Honestly, I just leave levels rather than rate them sad face if I don't like them, because of the fact that everything you do is published.

Maybe I'm playing too many levels with <1 plays.

Yeah, I do the same as crazymario. Partly because I don't like the eye for an eye rating I've seen happening with names being attached to the votes, but it also seems a bit mean spirited to give sad faces to a stage unless it's maliciously bad (by which I mean something that would get Good Griefed as well).

I suppose the black and white Good/Bad system is more useful than LBP1's more opaque star ratings, but the idea of creators being able to see not only that their level has been given a bad rating, but exactly who did it, makes me feel a bit uneasy.

Aye indeed, I faintly recall a thread from a few days ago where a player ranted about a group of people sad facing all his levels because he sad faced some creator's level. Or at least that's what I think happened. Either way, yeah some people may not be as understanding or accepting of a sad face and hold a grudge.

I do basically exactly what you do.

I think that's the best way to use a "Like / Dislike" rating system.

I've been playing all brand new levels and most of them were sad face levels. H4H, free prizes, random crap and a scoreboard. Then I got to a level that was a versus game. It wasn't very good but it was better than the rest I had recently played. I sad faced it. 2 minutes later I got an invite. I accepted and the player asked "Why did you sad face my level?" So I asked him to show me it again and he did. I said o yea. He asked me to give him some pointers on how to improve it. He said he was upset because I was the first to play it and I sad faced it. So I gave him some pointers and changed the sad face to a happy face because he wanted to know how to improve it. Moral of the story is if you are going to give it a sad face, then leave a review or comment to help them out. Unless the level is total garbage.2011-01-27 01:50:00

Yea judging by some of the tings I've seen on this site and on LBP in the reviews and comments, the sad face is used by quite a few people as the new age middle finger. A lot of times it's accompanied by some mean words and a lot of ************* %^^$%&%^&$%&2011-01-27 02:42:00

There needs to be a "meh" face imo.
It's annoying to look in the stats to see what the ratio of "non-ratings : plays"...

I preferred stars.
Everyone is going to lean towards happy faces even if the level is borderline. For various reasons like stalkers on LBP.me.

Yeah, I do the same as you, Cog.

You can't use the sad face too liberally, y'know?

I will never leave a "sad face"... either blank or happy... Same here, except in retaliation for getting a sad face, I'll go out of my way to play any swine's level who sad faces me just to sad face them back.2011-01-27 03:47:00

Instead of happy and sad faces, I'm using pandas.

If I play a level that is breath-taking, extraordinary, or informative, happy panda.
If it's a poorly designed level, (shark, bomb survival, etc.) sad panda. However, it will get a happy panda if it strays away from all the other sheep who make them.
If it's a super poorly designed level made by someone who can't create for the life of them but tried their best (small children too), I leave it alone. I mean everyone can't be a pro like the master creators. Since, it's in neutral, I call it "meh it was ok".

I use the star system but.. differently..
I use the following to determine what I give a level, each section representing a star:

Gameplay
Presentation
Originality
Atmosphere
Pace

1-2 "stars" = ):
3-5 "stars" = (:

I believe feedback to a level is essential, and I always try to rate what I believe the level deserves.

I believe feedback to a level is essential, and I always try to rate what I believe the level deserves. Yeah, its your MM given right to give feedback, but, I guess its just a hang up of mine, this is probably why I'd be no good on a jury, I could never send someone to jail or death row, even if they deserved it. And if some 5 year old kid makes a level that I don't personally enjoy I'm not going to give him a "sad face", if anything I'd wind up giving him a "happy face" because that 5 year old will probably get enough grief from the over-critical LBP PROs.

Beyond that, whenever I'd look through the cool pages in LBP1 & saw a level that had zero plays, I was the guy who'd give them a pity play & 5 star their level, because why not give that creator a positive experience? It might encourage them to try again & improve, versus receiving negativity & never playing the game again.

why in the world did they let people see who sad faces what? at the most it should say "so-and-so rated your level!" not what they rated it.2011-01-27 11:07:00
