How the LBP search engine works...

Archive: 11 posts

Besides "very badly" of course :hero:

I've noticed that they kept the same (wonky) search engine as in the beta, and here are some of the things I have observed which you may not know about and explains why you get seemingly "random" results (and why it needs to be changed).

1- The search looks through the following items : Author's PSN name, Level's name, Level's description (I'm not sure if it searches through tags and comments).

2- The search looks for the words you type in AND dissects your search terms to look for "partial" matches.
What does this mean? Here's an example : I once looked for my PSN ID Jirugameshi, and came up with the level called The Tower of Gilgamesh.
Why? Jirugameshi = The Tower of Gilgamesh

This may seem useful at first, but consider the implication. If you look for the word "cat", the search engine will go out of its way to look for "cat" "at" and "ca" partially in any of the fields, and then display ALL of the results to you at once (so you will end up with rat, fat, hat, cat, car, catherine, etc etc etc, when all you wanted was "cat").

I don't know who came up with that system or why, but I do know that it doesn't help me to find the levels I'm looking for, and will only return even more useless results as more and more levels are published

Makes sense.... but in the end it's not useful for LBP. The sorting is obviously very weak.2008-11-11 22:05:00

I believe it is only supposed to dissect your search term if it has trouble finding the full term. So when you search "Jirugameshi" it only finds one or two things and desides to dissect your term and find similar items.2008-11-11 23:37:00

Yeah the search is strange. It must bring in other factors than the word.2008-11-13 17:34:00

I think the problem is in the ordering. When you searched for your name, your levels probably came up. The problem is that they may have been on the 278th page. They need to assign priority to levels based on how closely it resembles your search.2008-11-13 18:19:00

Yeah this needs to be in the next patch, that's just stupid, I mean LBP, we each get a maximum of 20 levels, it takes so long to find what your looking for, and it's only been the first month!2008-11-13 22:28:00
