Engineering: UR Doin' it Right!

Archive: 13 posts

As a mechanical engineer for 20 years I just wanna say its really nice to see everyone on her discussing Cams, motors, joints, mechanisms, etc.

Engineering is a dying art in the UK (for example I am the youngest guy in the dept at 36) and I don't see anyone younger coming through into engineering from School.

I did a recruitment fair for a company a few years ago and the Microsoft stand was swamped but we had about 4 people all day who expressed an interest in going into engineering. But without mechanical engineering you wouldn't have anything you rely on in todays society, from cars to washing machines to scissors, well anything really, and its the most accessible way into original design.

Ok its just for a game but I bet most of you have never really tried designing anything like this before, and its just nice to see.

I hope you don't mind if I correct you on some of the names for mechanisms

haha yeah, LBP does bring out the engineer in people 2008-11-11 15:27:00

Well yeah and some of the ideas on how to get round problems are amazingly original. The problem I have is I factor in thing like wear and friction and think 'oh that joints got too much weight on it'. So in the end I have to step back and realise things like that aren't important in LBP.

Maybe it may tempt some people into mechanical engineering which is a enjoyable job most of the time.

I need to get the story side aced so I can get onto building things.

I've always been interested in engineering and machines myself. I blame it on getting sets of Meccano as a kid. But that's really what drew me to this game in the first place.

Unfortunately, real-life engineering takes considerably more time than in LBP, and doesn't come with an "undo" feature for when it all goes horribly wrong :hero:

Glad to hear that there's an actual mechanical engineer walking around the little big planet, feel free to share your knowledge and correct our naming and concepts if you think it can help

Actually no, the concept time just takes about the same amount of time. But there is a hell of a lot more maths involved. I just get someone else to do it. There are a lot of CAD programs now with prebuilt items in you can use to just mix and match, and then simulate the movements of, so not actually that different to LBP in that respect.

I am actually a Project Manager now which means dealing with boring systems and financial rubbish but it is nice when I can get back to designing things occasionally.

I did check out some of the LBP central levels last night and was well impressed with some of them. However I think the mecanisms on the story levels are amazing.

I've been wondering which career to go to. Is engineering good pay?..2008-11-11 15:57:00

Depends what you go into, but yeah its certainly better than having a hairnet and a name badge.

Design/Development is probably the best branch to go into.

awesome man, your insight will be most welcome. but yeah, LBP can be tricky in that it's physics BASED and you'll find the boundaries of reality pretty quickly... like... light in LBP shows THROUGH solid objects, glass shows up like a beacon in fog when nothing else does, you can pull things up a ramp just by kicking your legs while you yourself are suspended in mid air, and too many bolts on an object creates perpetual motion. but it's an excellent product and wonderful for flexing the brain.2008-11-11 17:50:00

Lots of my mates at school have taken engineering. It's coming back! They all think LBP rocks. As opposed to my other friends who think it has no point. 2008-11-12 10:53:00

I agree, from an educational point of view it's very nice to have people experiment all sorts of mechanical contraptions in an environment with physics.
