Sidescrolling Camera?

Archive: 7 posts

I was hoping someone could tell me how to make a sidescrolling camera, like the one from the 4th level of The Cosmos (Sorry can't remember the level name!) So if anyone knows how to make something like that, do tell! 2011-01-26 04:04:00

not sure this would work but couldn't you attach a camera to a piece of invisible hologram material and then set it to follow the player(s) somehow?2011-01-26 04:11:00

I just picked up the LBP2 strategy guide, and it tells you how to do this.

You do indeed use invisible holographic material. Make a 16:9 box with four separate walls. You can then make this box move across the level at a steady pace.

Now place four Tags on each of the walls. Create a microchip with a corresponding set of Tag Sensors, each hooked up to a Simple Mover. Now set the Movers so that they "nudge" your vehicle in the opposite direction from the walls as you approach them. The guide recommends you use a right/left speed of 10 for the left wall; -10 for the right; an up/down speed of 10 for the bottom wall; and -10 for the top. It should be strong enough to keep you in the zone, but you'll still get pushed off by a solid object. If you use another set of sensors, properly tweaked so the detection range is at 180 degrees facing inward, and hook them up to destroyers, your vehicle will be destroyed if you go off screen.

If you want to make a sidescroller such as Gradius, I would recommend having a camera that doesn't move at all, but have the whole level move sideways at a steady pace. You can also just always emit the next piece of the level when it has to come visible in the screen instead of having it exist at the beginning. This way you can have an infinitely long level without actually moving at all.2011-01-26 19:39:00

Pictures if you don't mind kinda confused on what you're saying.

He's saying that you basically make a box out of hologram, and have the ship push to the center when it gets too near it. I actually created a drag on my spaceship for "Pixelated". It works well, but doesn't allow for you to move backwards or accelerate. Overall, it doesn't really deduct from the gameplay. Basically, i made it so that you had an up/down stronger than the drag and a left/right weaker. The drag came into effect outside of a blue keyed zone, so I could let you stop and move aroung to fight a boss if i had a large one.2011-01-27 01:47:00
