Ampere Cave: Trials, my first published level.

Archive: 12 posts

Ok, so, after a good week or so of yelling at the editor every time something fell apart, I've finally produced a level Im happy with.

The full name is: "Ampere Cave: Trials Ver. 1.0"

Perhaps not the prettiest level ever, though I did my best on that part (Im no artist), this level is designed to provide a very difficult challenge to expert players. I wanted something that *I* would find challenging.... if I dont enjoy playing my own creation, what's the point? And I can always make easier ones later on.

As it is, I give no apologies for the difficulty level of this one. This is sorta like Megaman 9; it's really freaking hard, but entirely fair, nonetheless.

The idea is simple; Pass a simple jumping puzzle test, and cross the 2 bridges to enter the cave; beat the 2 trial rooms within to open the gate to the boss room. Defeat the boss, if you can, to reach the level's end.

I've spent ALOT of time testing this, and re-testing, and then testing some more. I wanted to get out as many screwball bugs as possible, and make sure that, while difficult, it IS possible to ace the level. Considering the boss, though, if anyone else actually DOES that, I'll be impressed.

I think I've come up with a fairly unique boss fight for this; I'll just say, I took alot of inspiration from all of the many shmups I play.

This is mostly meant for single-player. Multiplay is possible, but will make certain sections a good deal harder.

Anyways, if anyone would give it a try, and give me some opinions on it, I'd certainly appreciate it. Again though, Im no artist

In particular, if anyone finds any bugs or glitches or problems with it, definitely let me know; that'd be a big help.

Im wondering about that too.

Their system for this is just a BIT screwy. It's being played though, so SOMEONE is finding it.

Try an exact name search? The name I mentioned in my above post is the exact name, letter for letter. Try putting that whole thing in.

They've GOT to come up with a better way of doing this. I've found it REALLY annoying if I wanna search for any specific levels I've heard of on here.....

Or you can try searching for authors..... Im Bridget_ on there. With one underscore.

Try that.....

Aye, same here.

Bloody thing was published 14 hours ago, by the game's clock. Only 15 plays. And considering the totally-random nature of "quick play" mode, that low number makes little sense.

Im *really* hoping that sometime soon, MM does something about the godawful interface for this particular thing.

Aside from something like this just being ANNOYING, it's also a giant pain to flip through all those "pages" on the server just because they HAVE to list the levels by region (which makes no sense).

This is really the only problem I have with the game right now. And being that the server still seems to me to be a bit overstressed (it seems to freak out relatively frequently), Im guessing this'll hopefully get better as time goes on.

What's the name of the level you put up, Tomo? I'll try and search for it myself and give it a whirl if I can find it. At least you'll get SOMEONE trying it while the server is being a snot.

Also: Searching for "Ampere Cave" did the trick; though it also brings up a buncha other things with either the word "cave" in it, or things that have NEITHER word. But it also brought up mine right away. It's got that yellow..... circle-y picture on it.2008-11-12 08:39:00

THANK YOU! I honestly don't see why most people wont even attempt levels with some difficulty to it. Most levels you just run through and win and there's no challenge whatsoever. My level has a few challenging elements as well and people tend to not even try to get through it.2008-11-12 08:54:00

Ok I didn't manage to finish it, I got to the second bunch of cardboard platforms where you have to hope that sackboys stupid random jump mechanics going to be your friend multiple times in a row, which obviously he wasn't. I could try again but the first bunch of those platforms took me about 10 minutes so I really can't be bothered. The other parts weren't too hard, even the second glass bridge I managed without too much stress. I would not say it is fair though with those stupid cardboard things. The mechanics of the game that give you an annoyingly low amount of control of sackboy in the air make that a huge fluke to pull off.

EDIT: ok I lied, I replayed and made it up tot the up and down spiky glass bit and realised I had no hope, I'm really giving up this time

Like I said, lol, it's not meant to be easy.

Fully controlling Sackboy's movements does take alot of practice; as it is I've played this just a BIT too much and can do those cardboard platforms without messing it up once. The key is to understand just how momentum affects your jumping (which is important for any difficult stage). I've had someone else test it with me just to see how he handled it, it took him a couple tries but he got the hang of it.

The jump mechanics though arent random; they're just more difficult to fully learn than they initially seem, which I think throws off alot of players. It IS a physics-based engine after all.

At those cardboard.....things, the ladders, I call them, when you're on one, start walking forward slowly as the one you're on is retracting; jump off of the end, and then pull back in the air to land on the next one. It'll seem hard at first but it's easy once you get the hang of it. If you just keep trying to jump straight up, or just sorta at an angle, you'll fall; which is the intent. I put those in the level early on, figuring that if the player attempting it cannot pass them (and there's a 3rd one, which is different and harder), well, they most likely will have problems with at least the ice section, and definitely the boss.

It's meant to be a difficult challenge; I dont find enough levels I consider "hard" online, so I figured, I may as well make one myself.

A big thanks for trying it though! Im trying to get various people, of varying skill levels, to try this out and see where it stands, as that goes. So far I've had differing responses depending on who's played it.

I'll make my next level easier; but this one was partially made for my own enjoyment, and therefore needed to be particularly difficult......

Heh, yeh I guess I'm not that great at the play aspect of LBP, however, sackboy's jump IS random, do the same multiple times and you'll realise you get a slightly different result each time, this is amplified when specific landings are required, I figured out one way of making it up those ladders reasonably consistently but sometimes it causes sackboy to do a weird wall jump into the spikes.2008-11-12 09:37:00

After alot of experimenting with it, Sackboy's jump IS the same every time..... IF you hold the jump button down the entire way and dont move. Otherwise you get momentum in the mix (if you move at all, or if the platform you're on moves). I sometimes forget I have to hold the jump button the WHOLE time if I want a maxed out leap, and this usually ends with me in a hole.

ALSO, if you're standing on even the slightest incline, the game will take that into account when calculating your jumping angle.

I think there's more to it, too, beyond just this.

It just takes some practice, is all.

Of course, LBP being so GOOD and, in my opinion, addictive, well, play it enough, and you'll definitely get it fully down

And this is one game where I think most people will have no trouble playing it again and again, since it's just that good.

I think the main game levels are actually really good for practicing the jumping.... I can think of a specific few that are rather nasty, as this goes. Like that..... what was it..... Ninja tower, in Sensei's area, with all of those accursed spinning fabric wheels.... that was the part that I had the most trouble with my first time through.... I yelled at the screen alot, heh. That stage was great for learning momentum though.

well for me there is definitely some randomness, even just standing still, sackboy likes to go random directions when your jumping a a flat surface. The only part in story that had me stuck was the final wheel on the bunker, now that took some patience.2008-11-12 10:38:00
