Level idea: The Cube
Archive: 15 posts
So any of you living in the UK may have heard of an ITV gameshow called "The Cube". The basic idea is that a contestant enters this large, glass cube with a pixelated floor and attempt to complete a physical or mental task. These tasks can range from counting a certain number of squares on the floor to rebounding a ball of a cushioned wall and back into a certain zone. The tasks are quite simple, but are most of the time easier said than done. Players have 9 lives, and everytime they fail a task, they lose one life. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_4m8B9GxF8 Episode 1 of the second series I have been a huge fan of this show since it premiered and have thought "This could be fantastically worked into LittleBigPlanet". Now the LBP2 has come along I'm ready to take the plunge and attempt a really good level, but I'll need some support from fellow fans of "The Cube". http://static.technorati.com/10/09/19/18561/The-Cube.jpg It seems simple enough, have parts of the level sectioned off as square area that contain the games. Passing will open the door to the next task, failure will result in a life lost. I'm sure some form of HUD can be worked in. I'm not fully savvy with the logic of LBP2 creation yet, but I'm reckoning I'll want to know how to make: -A HUD -Timers -Cutscenes (Are they possible within a level?) -Audio recordings -A change in lighting when a task is completed -The ability to make a game easier -The ability to let a player fail once without loss of a life -And some other bits and pieces Some games actually transfer over rather easily: Elevation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLT_JKXgoSA&feature=related) (8:50) : Raise a tube containing a ball up the side of the cube without the ball falling from either open end, then place the ball into a tube at the top. The tube is connected to a string on each side of the tube. [So place R1 to raise the right string and L1 to raise the left string] Stop Zone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLcQqouwd0A&feature=related) (2:10) : When a button is pressed, the floor begins to turn blue at a constant speed. The blue disappears when it reaches half the distance. The player must press the button again when the believe the blue would've reached a certain zone. [Simple enough, one button starts and stops it.] Expulsion (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=iv&v=B9LuAeQZfIg&annotation_id=annotation_655874) (0:05): 500 balls are within a container and must be removed in an alloted amount of time. (I think having the play area filled with balls that disappear when grabbed could work for this, play similarly.) So, what do you all think? Would this be a good idea? | 2011-01-25 20:45:00 Author: demon scutter Posts: 15 |

It's not a cube, it's a rectangular cuboid | 2011-01-26 22:25:00 Author: wilkesy88 Posts: 73 |
I'd like to thank you all for the positive feedback, sorry I've been away so long, some personal issues arised. I am happy for anyone who wants to help to help. My PSN ID is Demon-Scutter. I have decided to start with the less technical side of things by simply building the cube itself, and I've run into some problems with the doors. http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/3567/snapshot20110208d.jpg So, what I was thinking for an entrance and exit was a sort of glass cat-flap that would open when in a close vicinity to it using a player sensor linked to a bolt in the middle glass panel. However, I cannot find a bolt that will allow me to open this flap one way, the closest I can find is a wobble bolt, that opens the door both ways. Can anyone help me? Many thanks. | 2011-02-08 13:18:00 Author: demon scutter Posts: 15 |

i love wobble bolts but getting them to behave can be tricky. | 2011-02-08 23:22:00 Author: Deftmute Posts: 730 |
Set the wobble bolt to forwards/backwards, with a rotation of 90 degrees should do it... Thanks mate, this sorted the problem out. With a single cycle on, it means players may enter but not exit. I also made the floor neon to better represent the lighting of the actual show, and added a lighting changer to make the level darker when inside the cube. Now that the entrance is sorted, I wanna actually work on getting a game working inside before working out an exit. Any ideas on a simple task to start with? I was thinking of a level similar to the "basketball" level in the story, where you simply have to throw a rubber ball through a hoop. So I'm going to need some help: How can I construct a similar hoop? How can I rig The Cube floor to turn green and open the exit door if the ball is successfully hooped? How can I cause the floor to turn red if the ball doesn't pass through the hoop? I have a feeling it may be hard to work out how to incorporate a fail option, but I'm hopeful we'll work something out. I'll get back to working things out, help would be much appreciated! | 2011-02-08 23:45:00 Author: demon scutter Posts: 15 |

Well, for the floor you can choose an 'off' colour. So while the player is playing, set it to white, and when sucessful green. However as for making it red? Pass... | 2011-02-09 17:54:00 Author: wilkesy88 Posts: 73 |

Well what I've done is rigged the floor to turn red should the ball hit it, and I've made the hoop a basket, where the bottom of the basket has a trigger for success. However, as the floor cannot turn three colours, I'm having to simply change the lighting to green to show success. I'll put some pics up shortly to show how things are going. | 2011-02-09 20:30:00 Author: demon scutter Posts: 15 |
