Movies That Surprised You (Pleasantly or Otherwise)

Archive: 17 posts

Wanted to make a thread not just about movies, but ones that you may have seen with the thought before hand that it was going to just suck, but ended up being quite good. (Or just decent.)
Go ahead and share out movies you thought were going to be good and ended up sucking, if you have any. Who doesn't like hearing about a bad movie?

Looked bad, were good:
Repo Men (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Repo_Men)
The trailer painted this depressing and bleak future blah blah blah, never payed attention to it. Then came the DVD and figured I'd give it a shot. A movie I recommend you at least rent. A solid movie that gets you hooked in. Now it's not going to win any huge awards or anything, but it was still very good.

Traitor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traitor_%28film%29)
So I'm looking at a DVD cover with Don Cheadle's face on it. Eh, Why not? Great choice. Great movie. I have no idea why it got absolutely zero attention, but it really deserves at least some, movie was an absolutely solid spy/ action thriller.

Looked good, were bad:
Gamer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamer_%28film%29)
Thought it would be this neat little popcorn flick. Who doesn't like action movies with 'splosions, sweaty Gerard Butler, and/ or female nudity? Wow was I wrong... painful dialogue, transparent story, and just boring down to the end and what I can only assume was the climax of the film.

Pineapple Express (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pineapple_Express_%28film%29)
Sorry to anyone who actually likes this movie, but I thought it was just terrible. The only parts that made me even "heh" were parts that didn't even include the main characters. And I can't even fully recall them.

Only other one I can think of is really Madagascar 2. Was a date movie and enjoyed sucking face more than what felt like, essentially, an extended cartoon episode.

Included itty bitty reviews for the sake of starting content. Not expecting anyone else to really put that much detail into posts. So lets talk surprise movies?

Looked bad, were good:
Toy Story 3
Didn't really like the second one. Was surprised at how good this is.

The Expendables
Looked horrible, but was actually pretty decent.

Looked good, were bad:
Gamer
Worst. Film. Ever. Seemed like the only purpose of the film was nudity and explosions. Plot? What plot?

The Road
YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG. This is pretty much what I was saying over and over during the whole film. It seemed like the father was more focused on getting his child to kill himself more than anything else. Maybe the book is better, I dunno.
SPOILER:
At the end, before the father died he told the kid not to go off with strangers. The kid goes off with the first stranger he finds.

"Romeo + Juliet" from 1996

I was kinda :/ at first when hearing it was a modern version of it but it turned out to be incredibly well made, lots of great effects and the characters are really good in my opinion as well, fulfilling their roles. Be warned though, it is quite brutal to the heart, but if that is the way you like it, then you better watch it!

One of the movies that pleasantly surprised me was UP. When I first saw the commercial, I didn't think much of it at all, but when I actually went to see it, it really...blew me away.
See what I did there?

I actually haven't been unpleasantly surprised by any movies I've seen in theaters, from what I can remember.

Looked bad, were good:
G-Force: At first I thought: little gerbils that perform secret missions? Looked a bit childish, but I got to watch it on TV and I liked it.

I can't say much more because I'm not a movie appreciator. I just watch them when I don't have nothing else to do or if it really looks interesting.

I like Red.

Looked Good, Were Bad:
- Paranormal Activity.
I was expecting to pee myself watching this movie in theaters, but was unpleasantly surprised by how boring it actually really was. The movie uses too many "teaser" scares were you think something's gonna happen, but nothing does. /:

Looked Bad, Were Good:
- Slumdog Millionaire.
Really LOVED this movie, and honestly, I wasn't expecting much. This movie really hit a homerun for me. I think I only cried equally while watching The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. THIS is a must watch movie for sure.

District 9.

I had heard very, very little about the film. Only that it was about aliens. I assumed then that it would be a "horror" or a typical "alien" movie.
It's now one of my favourite films ever. A masterpiece.

If you haven't seen District 9. Go and see it.

Looked bad, was good:

1408: I was on one of those horror movie runs one night and decided to watch, "1408". It was actually very good and did tug at me a little with the father daughter dynamic. It is now one of my favorite movies!
The Road: Saw attack of the show talking about this and I thought it looked terrible, but my Dad wanted to see it so we watched it. FANTASTIC, that's really all I need to say...
The Green Hornet: Saw this recently, expecting a joke of a movie. It was actually extremely entertaining and unique.
Antichrist: This one is an odd one. First off, most of the people on this website aren't going to be watching a movie like this, but nonetheless it's worth mentioning for any more mature people out there. This movie TURNED MY STOMACH. Definitely graphic and disturbing, but it also was a work of art with fantastic mood. I hated it...but I loved it...yeah
Juno: I was expecting another stupid teen love movie and was surprised to find a fun and interesting movie. The characters just grab your attention in an odd way.

Looked good, was bad:

Grown ups: This movie sucked, not even going to sugar coat it. I didn't even smile during the entire movie and neither did anyone else in the audience. It was very awkward.

I'll add more when I think of them, but I repress these kind of memories...

Leon: The Professional

When I first saw this movie, I was amazed at the acting. The beginning was a bit alright, with the action distracting you from the boring dialogs. But just when I thought the movie was down right lame, I was blown away by the plot that started to emerge. I never really liked movie endings, but this movie's ending was probably the best ending I have ever seen. Seriously. Just. Go. Watch. It.

This little info-graphic should help when it comes to figuring out Inception. MASSIVE spoilers, if you have not seen the movie, do not click on the spoiler, it probably wont make sense to you anyway.

I haven't seen the Road, and am now torn.
Does it suck? Or do I go with the guy who likes one of my most despised movies, Juno.. I'm so torn!

As for Paranormal Activity, both 1 and 2 (and 3) are all the same. This build up.. build up.. build up.. "BOO!" Then you jump, but are never really scared. Ever. A shame that passes for good horror now.
Watch .Rec, or even the Decent for a real fright.

Speed Racer: OK, I was little. This was on, and we were going to see it and go to Pizza Hut. My dad couldn't get the time off work, so we skipped the movie. I was upset, but oh well. I saw it on TV recently and I'm glad I didn't pay to see it. I walked out the room halfway through, what the duck was going on? I know I don't.

August Rush: I'd nether heard of this until we were asked to watch it at school, I admit, but I overheard everone saying it was bad. Good god were they wrong. So boring, like Oliver Twist (good) and complelty taking out everything that made it good. I think this scene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sN0c_egqXAM) explains it all. How the heck does he play a guitar slapping it? That's not the worst though, he can read music, play an organ looking at it the first time. No, just, no.

Worse movie I ever seen without a stinking doubt....Dragon Ball Z..the live action....nuff said. >_<

Best Movie well...to this day I still love titanic, so well made and beautiful. If I have to choose something that really changed me would be...wow tough one..but Charlie St Cloud made me cry lol (maybe cause the movie felt like it was about me) but I also loved others like The Cure, Forest Gump etc.

There was also a good movie I watched once about a sick girl who was slowly dying...and wow it was sad. Theres a whole bunch of movies that inspired me and made me reflect about life and stuff but I cant remember the names =/.

I hated Juno & loved The Road, it has a slow measured pace & does a lot through mood rather than action set pieces or explosions, so its probably not for everyone but it was a real treat for me when I saw it.
