Mechanical water

Archive: 9 posts

Hi there,

I want to get a nice water effect using pieces of cardboard cut into wave like shapes, and then get lots of them moving together in a wave like way - i bit like the water in the escape from alcatraz level if i remember rightly. Any idea on the mechanism I could build to achieve this?

I have an image of a egg shape piece rotating on a motor bolt, which then pushes against the wave pieces somehow...... I think i saw and old fashioned kids toy like this once or something.....

Try closely examinign the water peices in the first 3 levels in story mode, and the water around the submarine at the start of the savannah...2008-11-11 04:17:00

well you can use motor bolts, pistons, or wobble bolts, i suggest the motor bolts though, the thing is that you need to off center the motor bolt and put the rod (or if you want just use a piston to get an even better look but it will be harder) on the opposite side of the rubber circle (ie. motor bolt on the left and then the rod or piston on the right side)2008-11-11 04:18:00

I have seen great success with fake water when using a system like this:

pay no attention to the girls this is the first image I found. . . anyway back on topic
the wave shaped pieces of cardboard move in independent elliptical patterns so that when the one rises the other is falling. Although using two or three layers of something like this would use almost all of the thin layers it provides a very pleasing "water" effect.

I'd attach the "waves" to a spring, and the bottom fo the spring to the ground, and then string the bottom in the middle of the wave to a circle on a motor.

May work, may not, something to try...

i like to put blue gas on an emmitter, and have a proxy switch so when people come near it starts moving, and makes it seem like a waterfall or something. I also add lots of rushing water sound effects to hide the sound of the flies.2008-11-11 07:50:00

I'm thinking of making some mechanical water also. Check this link out, not sure if you have seen it or how helpful it would be but it looks pritty cool.

The egg shaped thing you mentioned is called a 'Cam'. (I may as well try to teach you guys something about engineering while I'm here )

To be honest I would put the cardboard waves rest on wheels where the axle isn't in the centre of the wheel. This makes the cam effect but saves a component, and use springs to attach the waves to the floor (or put the axle through the cam directly). Using 2 cams you could have the waves rise and fall while staying at the same angle or make them 'roll' by altering the rotation of each cam in relation to the other one.

What nice about LBP is I keep thinking about how much wear the components would have, of course this doesn't matter in LBP one bit.

Wow! thanks for all the ideas guys (and the engineering education )

I'm definitely gonna try and do this 'cam' setup in my level, and I was thinking of adding a waterfall, so i will try the emitter idea too!

Cheers!
