Aesthetic Value of a Level?

Archive: 5 posts

I've been working on a level for a while (my first!) and I have most of the actual gameplay parts done, but I'm having trouble with the level's appearance. I see some great levels that use maybe three or four materials and throw some stickers/decorations in that work really well, and other great levels that use like 15+ materials and lots of stickers/decorations.

So are there any suggestions or tips for this? To give an idea, my level's theme is like a snowy mountain/cave/water thing. Mostly like underground in a mountain

Thanks for any help!

Well I know that limiting your material palette and not using a bunch of different stickers will reduce thermo strain.2011-01-25 05:10:00

most creators I've seen use only a handful of materials, just to keep thermo down, and then utilize stickers to create dynamics. So, like four or five materials, and then stickers to differentiate the areas/surfaces. The organize by color feature should help with that style of creation. I haven't personally delved too far into create mode yet (trying to get those last few pesky items) in LBP2, so I'm not sure if that's changed at all from the first.

In your case whites/blues/grays...maybe light yellows/tans...for contrast sake. use the crystal decorations and old glass (from the PotC pack) as ice. rough rock as your underground bits. Really, it all comes to how much thermo you have left after your gameplay bits have eaten through it. if it hasn't done much damage go nuts, but it's easier to keep the level cohesive with less.

Or you can use all the materials you want, and then create a level link.2011-01-25 07:56:00

I might do the level link, but just wondering, aren't LBP2 levels supposed to hold more stuff than in LBP1? Cuz when I started working on my LBP1 level in 2, the pink bar was still the same.2011-01-26 20:33:00
