Comments are NOT reviews

That seems simple enough, right? Am I the only one noticing that it is apparently not so simple. "LOL Sooo Kewl" is not a review nor is "First!"2011-01-25 04:55:00

yea I'm sick of everything to get the trophies. Not only do you see a million stupid reviews, but when trying to play all brand new levels for the pin i ran into about a billion levels that were maeked as versus levels and had nothing in them and not even a scoreboard to help me out.2011-01-25 05:23:00

People are so desperate to get trophies. I like collecting them to but I don't do such dumb things to get them. That just makes you look like a pathetic ******. I really want the publish level trophies but I'm waiting till I can create something that's a decent level. And when I got the Write a Review trophies I wasn't even thinking about it when writing the review. I just wanted to give the guy props. Trophies and Achievements are just another example of something cool tarnished by stupid so called gamers. And do people really do the whole first thing with reviews. Do they know it doesn't make them special but just look like complete idiots.2011-01-25 11:33:00

Rarely do I post a comment, if and when I do It is because the game seems deserving of further praise than the simple play, rate, and heart. I always am sure to write a well thought out comment and suggestion whenever possible. So far I have written 1 comment the entire time I have had Lbp2.2011-01-25 12:27:00

Yes I have seen a "First" review. That is what made me start this thread. Although I know most LBPC users are the choir that im preaching to. It is just sad that Mm went and gave us useful features, but then weak ppl proceed to make them useless.

Well, I haven't checked out the community yet but in the beta, the same problem was there and a lot of people didn't seem to be able to tell the difference between a review and a comment. And there were plenty of blank "reviews" where the person doesn't write anything at all.
Since i haven't looked at the community as i previously mentioned, does h4h exist in LBP2? If so then i wonder how long it will be before we start seeing "h4h plz" in reviews.

The best thing in LBP is the community, and the worst is the community, but, when 1 person make something right, there are 2 doing something wrong, I think if we wait a little some people, I'll be borred of LBP2 (don't know how, it's a great game ) And I don't know why they do this, it's just a digital "trophie".2011-01-25 19:45:00

Well, for a starts, commenting should accessible more easily. Right now, when you finish a level, you only have to option to review them. This is why many people and most people will use the review section to place comments.

This is an interface design problem we have here in my humble opinion.

my favourite reveiw so far is "..." im seeing loads of h4h comments on the story levels, even though there is no trophy for hearts. they get hearts daily while not playing any community levels these are the people that ruin the community

edit: what annoys me the most is it took months and months to get 78 hearts, through hard work, and these people amass a huge amount of hearts for doing nothing while im slowly being unhearted

com?ment noun ˈk?-ˌment
b : an observation or remark expressing an opinion or attitude <critical comments>

re?view noun ri-ˈvy?
a : a critical evaluation(as of a book or play)

(as defined by merriam-webster)

Technically, a comment IS a review. Having both comments AND reviews in the same place is a bit redundant on Mm's part. They should have either 1) left the comment system as is or 2) implemented the review system IN PLACE of comments.
However, that doesn't excuse idiots for abusing either system.

Actually, by those definitions, they are not the same.

There is a clear distinction between a comment, in the sense that it is a specific observation or remark, vs a review which is an evaluation and thus is much larger in scope. Also, a review is explicitly and inherently critical, whilst a comment is not. If nothing else, there are very well established connotations of both words, defined by their typical usage. Even if you don't go into a proper analysis to demonstrate that the words do mean different things, the simple concept of the level of detail implied by either word should be a given.

TL;DR: Don't post dictionary definitions that undermine the point you are trying to make. Also, why does posting dictionary definitions count as "having something worthwhile to say" on the interwebs?

Anyway, on a lighter note, here are some "reviews" I've received:

PENGUINS CAN'T FLY!

booooooooooooooo

g

nan!

this was bam bam bammer

dom told me he likes small squinty eyed pen1s

wow who would boo dis only a bad person

****** retarded eat **** nd kill ur self u foreign ****

AMAZING IM A PENGUIN AND U BRING PENGUIN GLORY

sux supagrex's balls

sucks emmanuel 4563's balls

jon loves balls and ****

balls

Seems there is certainly a strong interest in balls amongst the LBP community. I assume these kids are all big sports fans, right?

I think they should just rename comments to reviews and vice versa.

There does need to be an easy way to make people write comments, so then if something is wrong with your level you have a greater chance of finding out.

I agree with everything written above. The reason why "H4H" was so trending in LBP1 was due to the trophy. I don't see why people still do it.. Probably for the pins though.
I think a Review should rate the specific level and give it a rate from 1 to 10. I hate reviews that looks like this; "Good, level. But it was hard!". Not an review, that better fits as a comment.

I want reviews to be writable from LBP.me, I think that would be fantastic option. Probably have some condition where you can only post reviews of levels you have previously played, but still, reviews on LBP.me would be win.2011-01-26 10:53:00

I remember in the beta, creators would talk to each other about the level THROUGH the comment section. Getting all the pointless comments to review page is great. Advertising/pointless comments like "ggggg" gets down rated, good reviews get uprated (not entirely true though, first in best dressed seems to be the case).2011-01-26 11:27:00

It's so-so. My top-rated review is simply "yeah", but it was the first one there. Second is actually meaningful but came in later. Mostly it's just a jumble and sadly, there don't seem to be enough people to downrate the proper spam / pointless things. Comments is not exactly fairing any better tbh:

hah, I remember down voting some of those pointless comments/reviews.

Interesting though, seems pretty messy. And I was taking it from the beta point of view, though I'd admit, there's a lot more pointless crap written in the full game.

While it's nice to debate the significance of trophies, the fact is they are there and Mm had carefully chosen them to encourage people to create and publish a level. I'd admit because of the trophy which required you to receive 50 level hearts In LBP1, I would of never started creating. So to me, the significance is big there.

Yes it sucks that people try to shortcut their reward, but all that does is make their trophies they received insignificant.

meh hopefully the community figures it out. The review feature would be useful. maybe set a minimum character lock on reviews. Of course then ppl might just leave "WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" as a review.2011-01-27 04:34:00

Sounds like a good idea, while there may be reviews like that, the chances of pointless reviews will decrease.

Don't feed the troll guys

The blank reviews are based upon the idea that tagging counts as a "review" I think. Which in some ways is good, as it means that taggings can be rated up and down, adding to their weight which should certainly help with the search filtering. Though I don't see why uprating tags couldn't have been separate...

I love all comments, reviews, ratings, etc, even the mean ones because it's all so bizarre, funny and surreal (like this forum, and me writing this in response to you now).

I am tired of seeing reviews on levels that should be in comments not in reviews, for example "so cool" is not a review it is 2 words, and barely a comment. I suggest a minimum word count to stop stupid people from spamming up the review section, say a minimum of 15 words, what would happen was a message if it is less than 15 words saying
"your review is a little bare, perhaps you could add some more detail? Or post in comments instead."

thoughts?

My pet name for him is worse than that! Technically, I guess he is a foreigner now too ()...and he's definitely a ***! But he also brings the penguin glory, so it kinda evens itself out

EDIT: Just realised this thread is a week old so I'd better make an actual contribution! I spoke to Tom about something similar to this last week...so Mm definitely are aware of this and I'm sure will be making the necessary refinements

From some other land where wobble bolts grow in the fields and you cant get through breakfast with out hearing the word "Boolean"

On topic, Jack, I reviewed your level. I took it seriously and must say did a good job. It prolly would be impossible to find though. Apparently "Extremely fun and challenging" is more thorough. The system could use a wee bit of tweak. I

This was also something I suggested, a way to be able to view the reviews from newest-oldest. If you're lucky enough to get a few thousand plays on your level, I'm sure there will be quite a few reviews on there too...and the same ones growing in popularity at the top isn't particularly desirable. As a creator it is frustrating because you have to sift through all the old ones to find the new ones...and also as a player it will get to the stage where there isn't any point leaving a review because the chances are it will never get seen anyway

Thanks very much for your review, I probably have seen it (I made a real effort to get through all 4,000+ of them!) But obviously remembering who said what would be a bit of a struggle

Yeah it doesnt sound smooth on that end either. 4000+ would test any system of sorting but nonetheless I love these new features. I want to read a review and have it mean something. In my review of your level I mentioned it had a slight "Ape Escape" feel. If I would not have been I and read the review, I would have been like "Oh?" and played it. so once Mm get it squared these things could be very meaningful.
