How to make a very very long lift!?!?

Archive: 11 posts

Okay, on the weekend i had a part of a level where the lift was VERY long. Now i only got about half an hour messing around with this lift.... but i couldn't make it work. What would you suggest using?
I used the winch tool attatched to a switch. The max and min height tweaks were the problem... they started at 700 odd and when i changed it, it instantly when to a max of 400 and no higher. I guess i just can't do it?

A ridiculously long slow lift, huh? Are you trying to recreate Mass Effect?

One practical solution (off the top of my head) would be to connect several max-lengthed chains together via glue or pistons (maybe something stronger. It should slow it down nicely if that's what you're looking for.

cool cool.
And i am re-creating a game.... but not that one. It's an easy guess and there's a fair few of them already up. But none with the detail i want lol. And no long lifts
But i'm only creating it as it's my first level... so since i already have the plan fully in my head it will help me get used to the tools. I won't be publishing it most likely.

EDIT: and if i get this long lift working.... i may try and make the theme song so it plays as you wait.... would be so epic...

I had one that was about 1800 in max length, all you do is have it floating or on the ground, were the lift starts, and pause it. Then attach the winch to the platform ( were it will be originally ) and then attach the other side on the top or whatever.

Basically, dont edit the length, mine was 1800, but when I tried to edit it, it would go back to 400, so you have to "trick" the game by just having it at 1800 from where it is.

I see. Thanks alot. There also a few things i'm confused about.
Time for example... does that mean how long it takes? or is it a speed measurement? The tweak menu still confuses me, but i'm sure i'll get used to it.
Have to wait till the weekend to play it again now *sigh*

Let me guess: Would this be the "But I Don't Want to Ride the Elevator!" level? If so, how are you handling all the overwhelming enemies? (I'd like to see some brains on tiny legs and jumping around. That'd be funny.)2008-11-11 00:46:00

lol, sorry bud, but nope.
I'm just doing a recreation of the beginning of MGS1. Yeah, i know there are loads of them but none to the detail i'd like. And this level will just get me used to the tools I can only play on weekends though so i've had barely any time at all.

But remember in MGS1 when you have to wait for the lift... then theres a long lift up (but it's a cut scene)? I want to make it kind of cut-scene like. Maybe put custom music in the back.... and have 'METAL GEAR SOLID' appear and dissolve on the lift or by the side. As i said, i won't be publishing it, it's just a level to get used to the tools. Though i may ask a few to test it so i can get feedback.

No of course not! You can adjust how fast it gets up there, mine gets from the bottom of the level to the top ( A Huge Crater ) In about 10 seconds.

You just have to adjust the speed, btw, this doesn't mean how fast, the speed calculates how long it will take from Point A ( The beginning ) to Point B ( The Top )

So for example, 4 seconds would take longer then 2 seconds.

Careful with recreating, sony might throw a fit and delete it off the servers. Like it says on the homepage.2008-11-11 02:42:00

. . . the speed calculates how long it will take from Point A ( The beginning ) to Point B ( The Top ). . .
That is not entirely accurate. The speed settings on the tweak menu for winches and pistons measure the amount of time that will have elapsed before the winch/piston returns to its starting state. So a lift with a time setting of 30 will take 15 seconds to get to the top, pause(if you told it to on the tweak menu), then take 15 seconds to get back to the bottom.

I'm not publishing it. Just doing it as a level to get used to the tools, and show a few friends.

Thanks for clearing that up. On the weekend i may have to bump this again if any more problems occur lol.
