Portal Concept/Tech Demo - MAJOR UPDATE
Archive: 21 posts
This is a level that I made to showcase the possibility of creating Portal in LBP2. It has fully-functional two-way Portals that Sackfolk can use to instantly travel from one to another, just like in the game, "Portal" by Valve. You can shoot the Portals, obviously. Unfortunately, the portals do not conserve momentum. I don't think this is possible to do, but even if it is, I'd have no idea how to go about implementing it. This version completely revamps the way you fire the portals. Each portal is now mapped to its own button. Changes coming in the future (maybe): Objects (Aperture Science Weighted Storage Cube, anybody?) going through Portals Demonstration Video (danke, Memodrix (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=43881-Vid-cap-right-here!)!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SviTZ_Ghxkk http://lbp.me/v/wxp6e4 | 2011-01-24 21:07:00 Author: Gawdl3y ![]() Posts: 45 |
I've been waiting for one of these so I'm gonna play it and leave feed back for it whether you'll play my level or not, but it'd be swell if you could try out my Bird Hunting level ![]() | 2011-01-24 21:14:00 Author: LukeCF ![]() Posts: 790 |
Your work around (using creatanators ) works, but I'd imagine it could be done better with some more complicated logic devices that being said I'm probably not gonna sit around and make them, so I'll stick around and see what you and any other portal fan comes up with ![]() | 2011-01-24 21:17:00 Author: LukeCF ![]() Posts: 790 |
Your work around (using creatanators ) works, but I'd imagine it could be done better with some more complicated logic devices that being said I'm probably not gonna sit around and make them, so I'll stick around and see what you and any other portal fan comes up with ![]() The creatinators were the result of debating with my friend about how I would go about implementing the firing of the two different colours. One of the previous ideas was to map L1 to fire an orange portal and R1 to fire a blue portal and have a creatinator that doesn't fire anything to make it look like you have a gun, but the portals wouldn't shoot from it. I might end up doing it this way after all, but I'm not sure yet. I will check your level out when I muster up the strength to get up off of my sofa to play LBP2. (I'm sick, I've been laying on my sofa for the past day and a half.) | 2011-01-24 21:28:00 Author: Gawdl3y ![]() Posts: 45 |
Ewww I'm sorry mate. Will I'm constantly updating it, so it's bound to be a little bit better when you finally get around to playing it, hah. | 2011-01-24 21:38:00 Author: LukeCF ![]() Posts: 790 |
I explain the logic behind the portals in the other thread that I made in the Ideas/Projects board. https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=45279-Portal-Concept-Tech-Demo&p=745598#post745598 | 2011-01-25 02:15:00 Author: Gawdl3y ![]() Posts: 45 |
I plan on updating the level as soon as I feel better to make a couple of changes: Get rid of the behaviour of both the old and newly emitted portals disappearing after swapping portal guns twice... I don't know why I thought this was a good idea Making the creatinator swapping less obvious (the creatinator that is emitted will not be visible for nearly as long) MAYBE map the orange portal to L1 and the blue portal to R1, and ditch the whole "swapping" scheme of things... this probably won't be in this update, but it might come in a future one. | 2011-01-25 03:56:00 Author: Gawdl3y ![]() Posts: 45 |
You know how all that works, or do you need help with logic or anything? | 2011-01-25 04:02:00 Author: LukeCF ![]() Posts: 790 |
That was pretty good. My only recommendation would be making a sort of crosshair, just to aid the player firing the portals. But that was a pretty cool concept! | 2011-01-25 05:42:00 Author: XFennoX ![]() Posts: 82 |
You know how all that works, or do you need help with logic or anything? Oh yeah, that stuff is all easy fixes, for the most part. I invite you to send me a friend request and check out the logic if you want, though. I'm feeling a bit better today, so I may be online. Hit me up. | 2011-01-25 16:57:00 Author: Gawdl3y ![]() Posts: 45 |
That was pretty good. My only recommendation would be making a sort of crosshair, just to aid the player firing the portals. But that was a pretty cool concept! I considered doing something like that, but it would look jerky compared to your head (with the creatinator)'s movement, thanks to the fact that joystick rotators only function at about every 10 degrees or so. | 2011-01-25 17:00:00 Author: Gawdl3y ![]() Posts: 45 |
Alright, I have churned out the update. I did the following: Glued the button to the floor (dumb mistake -- my thanks goes to the person who took a picture of himself standing on the door with the button upside down and uploaded it) Improved the colour swapping -- it's less obvious, and it works when you're moving much better. Placing a portal of the same colour as one already placed after swapping colours no longer destroys the newly-emitted one. Coming in future updates (possibilities, not sure): Abandon the swapping scheme of things, and instead use L1 and R1 to emit each respective colour. Object transportation -- objects going through portals! | 2011-01-25 19:04:00 Author: Gawdl3y ![]() Posts: 45 |

I just made a quick update to the level. You can now reset your placed portals by pressing the circle button. | 2011-01-26 18:53:00 Author: Gawdl3y ![]() Posts: 45 |
I just updated the level, with some pretty major changes. If you have played this before, you should again, because it is vastly improved over the first version. | 2011-02-05 18:40:00 Author: Gawdl3y ![]() Posts: 45 |
I made a small update yesterday that makes the travelling time between portals much closer to being instantaneous. | 2011-02-07 23:18:00 Author: Gawdl3y ![]() Posts: 45 |

I have alwasy wanted to make a portal level, gonna play this one for sure! Can you play my level and give me some feedback? https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=48010-TOWER-DEFENCE-level | 2011-02-08 15:29:00 Author: Unknown User ![]() |
Awesome, i've added this level to my queue, i'll play it later tonight or tommorow. In return, please try my level and comment honestly. http://lbp.me/v/xk-j9v Thanks! | 2011-02-08 21:01:00 Author: Unknown User ![]() |
