Music Sequencer Midi Import

Archive: 7 posts

Ok so I have a track that I wrote in midi, it's fairly complex and I know I can and have been trying to copy it note for not into the music sequencer but it's an incredibly long process. So my suggestion is to have midi import in the game, of course there's the "people using licensed music" argument, but if people were that desperate to have real songs in the game then they could use magic mouth to record it or something. So basically I want Midi import!!

Midi Definition for those not in the know

MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), pronounced /ˈmɪdi/, is an industry-standard protocol that enables electronic musical instruments (synthesizers, drum machines), computers and other electronic equipment (MIDI controllers, sound cards, samplers) to communicate and synchronize with each other. Unlike analog devices, MIDI does not transmit an audio signal — it sends event messages about pitch and intensity, control signals for parameters such as volume, vibrato and panning, cues, and clock signals to set the tempo. As an electronic protocol, it is notable for its widespread adoption throughout the music industry. MIDI protocol was defined in 1982.[1]

In short terms basically what LBP2's Music sequencer does is midi

MIDI files is dump of that protocol that that description saing, so it can be playback.

As that protocol function it contains note information of a song it can be easily converted to different sequencer and so on.

MIDI are mostly known to be used on polyphony ring tones (that are no popular anymore), karaoke (since it got note data and can be synced with text, not to mention it don't have vocals) and music artists ofcorse as a note infomation container

The biggest problem to implement this is fact that PS3 don't support MIDI files, so it practically impossible to import in in to the game since PS3 SDK only support importing from specific file types (at least as i noticed), or else you gonna use internet to import.

I made simillar sugestion to start discussion on that but it was ignored ;p

Despite the fact PS3 doesn't natively play midi, I still don't think it would be too hard a feature to implement, put midi file onto a memory stick and importing into the game or perhaps something on lbp.me that allows midi conversion. it's all entirely possible. I really hope MM Consider the idea, maybe for creator pack 2?2011-01-24 17:55:00

A MIDI parser wouldn't be at all hard to write - it doesn't need to exist in the PS3's default library of tools. It would also be very welcome as I too am porting over a track made in SONAR, in 3/4 time with 5 bar phrases that don't fit sequencer blocks and I have to work note by note unable to copy/past blocks. The problem at the moment is how to get the data from a USB stick into LBP2. Every game only reads/writes its part of the HDD for security purposes I believe. I don't think Sony will ever let a game root around conected storage devices and open files willy-nilly as that's an attack vector hacker use. I suppose even having that, how would you divided the music notes into blocks and instruments?

Edit: Maybe, at a push, just as direct audio recording is supported they could provide a MIDI input for music recording via LBP2 directly, negating the issue with importing files.

I'd love better music support, but I can't see MIDI support ever happening. The best we can realistically hope for are improvements to the current editor and synth.

LOL, did someone tried to record even just a distorted guitar with the magic mouth?
In the beta the quality was so poor that it wasn't possible to record anything in a decent way.
Neither the headset nor the Eye could keep up with fast notes.
I hope they have improved the record tool but I doubt it, because the major problem is in the capture devices.
