"Alternate control" for grappling hooks

Archive: 8 posts

I started playing LBP2 today, and still in the first world, I got a little frustrated by the control scheme the game uses for the grappling hook.

When you are swinging left and right, because the stick is analog, you end up triggering the up and down reeling, and this makes Sackboy lose momentum.

I hope that, in a future patch, they add an "alternate control" toggle for the grappling hook where the left stick controls ONLY the swing (left/right), while the reeling (up/down) is controlled by the right stick.

In my opinion, this would make the grappling hook much more precise and easy to use.

Don't worry dude, once you get the 'hang' of it (get it? ) it will become very easy and natural.

I for one, am very happy for the controls of the grappling hool, he ONLY thing I would change is an option to wether allow it to grab other player or not, but other than that, controls are great.

Oh and trust me, you can gain way more momentum like this, it would probably even bee more difficult if you only either swinged or went left/ right, imo at least.

Agreed with Silverleon that once you get used to it it's not too bad. I had some major problems initially. I don't actually see how it could possibly reduce the about of momentum you could obtain though.

Personally I preferred when x also reeled you in, but it's not such a great loss I guess.

I agree with Goodie on the tricky nature of the grappling hook. I don't think they should alter the controls, but I still have trouble getting a really nice swing in a lot of the time, since it has so much to do with the momentum Sackboy has when he grabs on. There's one grapple at the very beginning of the Turkey boss level at the end of the Factory world that I can't for the life of me nail, so there's a couple of prize bubbles that continuously taunt me.2011-01-25 13:46:00

The grappler doesn't work how most people expect. Basically you don't try and swing by shifting sackboy's weight. You ahve to use it more as a 'gravity slingshot'. You grab hold from a distance, shorten the rope, and then let go. Rinse and repeat to gain momentum. I'd much rather have a conventional swing mechanic, but I've never really got on wtih MM's choice of physics-based movements.2011-01-25 15:18:00

This is a great idea, I was thinking the same thing. It doesn't have to be the only setting, but make it an alternate one at least.

there was 1 and 1 only prize bubble i couldnt get because of the grappling hook but theres no problem with it you just got to get used to it.
i think the not grab on to other players needs to be put on the boss fight for factory of a better tomarrow. just try to play that online or with some friends its tough

I learned this the hard way trying to get all the items from a certain level in the Beginning of the game... where you had to swing between round sponge things on arms
