multi-floor elevator

Archive: 21 posts

I'm putting together an idea for a multi-floor elevator. The idea is that you should be able to call the elevator from any level and ride it to any level. More than 2 floors obiously or it would be easy.

The solution I'm thinking of is quite complex and uses a lot of OR switches and a special switch that can be turned on with one switch and turned off with another.

The level that I'm designing this for is nowhere near finished, but I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a proof of concept level.

I don't know if I can describe the design in words and have it make sense, but if anyones interested I'll try.

Thats confusing, but i bet you could do it if you tryed, unless its impossible O_o

nothing is impossible my friend, a guy built a calculator i am sure this is possible, most likely you will have to use a large and multi input XOR switch mabey 2 or 3, oh and that reminds me i am building an actuall puzzle, like literally a puzzle using and switches so i think that this is possible

I'm working on a proof of concept level of the exact thing.

The only trouble I'm having is figuring out how to trigger the elevator to go up AND down without going to the max. So lets say I had floors 1-8 I can get an elevator to trigger to go up to lets say 4 then stop on that floor but then if I switch the elevator to go to 3 it will go up to 8 then back down to 3.

Simple solution is two elevators following you to every floor(only one goes up the other down), Is it possible to do with only one elevator? I'd love to see your PoC level.

I think the way I've designed the triggering system two elevators is the only solution.

To the post above me, building the calculator is great, perfecting is better and using it in a level is the best.

Man this sounds like a complicated one. I'd really have to think this out. Seems like it would involve a LOT of timing and tweaking. And time itself.2008-11-12 22:48:00

i've been thinking about this exact problem too and i'm convinced there is a solution. i've just got other stuff occupying my mind and time now (don't worry, both real life and LBP stuff). if i come up with anything i'll let you guys know, and please keep ups informed on your progress.2008-11-13 02:13:00

couldn't you use two switchs? one for direction one for power?2008-11-13 02:16:00

Elaborate? Most items can only have one switch on them. Multiple pistons on a single elevator would make one move and the other never power/move. (even with multiple switches)

Maybe if you used a sort of conveyor belt system that pulls a car...I would think that a single car/winch system would be rather limited.2008-11-13 15:02:00

Bear with me on this on. You could make the lift cable out of a piston+block chain. Each piston will max out at a floors length. Therefore with 8 floors, to get to 8th none of the pistosn will be extended. 1st floor all pistons extended. 5th floor 3 pistons extended and so on.

Now you need a lot OR and AND switches, to match level switch with number of pistons.

i dont see the problem i would have thought a elevator/lift would be easy, make a lever switch when u push it left it goes down when u press it right it goes up2008-11-13 17:08:00

try making a Inteligent box for the elevator. i think somthing like: If you stand on button 1 -> a arm in the IB extends and starts the elevator (magnetswitch) and stops at a (now activated) magnetswitch.

Something like the attachment.

I have no idea yet for how to lower it. but give me some time and ill figure something out.

all in all it will be a bit of work

EDIT: for the down part place a magnet-switch for each lvl on the ceiling of the elevator-tower so each magnet reches to its coresponding lvl und reverses the chain-movement when activated.

Of course that would be easy, but to do that you would need the switch to be on the elevator. What he wants to be able to do is to call it from any floor he is on, even if the elevator isn't at the floor. Therefore, you have to use multiple switches. And only one switch can go to an object at a time.

Exactly what I had in mind

And simply using a red switch, which will then be changed to "direction"

Here the advanced picture

if "advanced" means stick figures... we're all in big trouble

if "advanced" means stick figures... we're all in big trouble

i was to lazy to draw a sackboy

but i got into creatormode just after that and boy was i wrong. its much more complicated than i thought. some of my AND / OR / NAND / NOR ideas wouldnt work due to game mechanics. still trying to get a workaround but that takes some time... hope to post it to the community as soon as its finnished so anyone could understand the technic behind it

YES, i am Victorious!!!!!!!

Created it today. took me only 4 houres :arg:

Explanation:

If the Elevator is on your floor, get on it and press the floor u want to get too.
-> in the "brain" the pistons push the amount of levels u need to rais or descend acordingly.

If the elevator is not on your floor then grab the grab-switch and a emitter in the elevator presses the button for the floor your on.

The Brain:

the "brain" in my version is 3 levels deep.
the first part has 1 piston on the left and 3 separate on the right
the second part has 2 on each side
and the third part has 3 in the left and 1 right

so if for example floor on is needed. part 1 is pushed to the right and the other 2 to the left, thus turning on only one piston that now expands ( or the others pull in)
if floor 0 is needed, all magnets get pushed to the left, thus every piston pulls in

very easy if you know hot to do it

if anyone got questions PM me or add me in PSN.

this will be tricky but i believe it's quite possible. all you really have to do is make it go like a real elevator, which is on a continuosly up and down path ( and have some way to trigger and un trigger certsin floors, the only harder problem i see in that is that picking floors within the elevator could be hard becuase of the large size you would need to acomidate many buttons or switches...2008-11-16 08:29:00

it isnt that big actually. mine is as long as 4 of the red button switches. due to my technic it is restricted to only 4 levels but with some extensions to the brain part it would be possible to have more. but that would take me too long and lets be serious: do you realy need more than 4 levels?2008-11-16 17:48:00

depends... if you wanted to make the little big resort you would need like 12 or 13 levels... or more... there are certain way's to achieve this thought where it'll be simple to add floors, without making a huge mechanical feature behind it.

from what i'm thinking, you just have an and statement for each level and when you call the elevator, it stops the piston. it's hard to explain but it's simple in reality, even though it doesent offer much control...
