The Lost (Demo)

Hey All!

This is a series I'm working on - Inspired by Heavy Rain. I reckon it's doing pretty well right now, but I still want to hear what you guys think of it! So far, both the Prologue and Chapter 1 have been released, and you can find them both by clicking on the link above, to queue it on lbp.me if you are so inclined to do so.

Anyway, all the levels are located within one level... if that makes any sense at all. Essentially, the main level is just a main menu, where you can choose to start a new game, play through a tutorial so you know what you're doing, read the credits and even resume the game from the chapter you were last on!

RESUMING a game is pretty simple really. At the beginning of every chapter (excluding the Prologue), you will be given a memorable phrase - this would be a word which has 6 or less letters in it. Anyway, remember this code (or write it down). When you load up the level to resume a game, click PLAY, and then RESUME. You will then be greeted with a blank box, where you can use the Left Analogue stick to write the word in the box provided. Press OK when you're done, and if successful, you'll be taken to the Chapter Menu, where you'll be able to access all those levels you've played up to that point. So enjoy!

Anyway, Love to hear what you guys think. I've worked pretty hard on this, but have enjoyed every minute of it (Give or take!)!. So I hope you like it as much as I liked making it!

If you'd like to get in contact with me, or leave reviews or comments, it would be great if you could do it on here, or PM me on LBPC. The problem is that level reviews on LBP2 are sorted by how highly rated they are - and with 2000+ reviews on there, it's almost impossible for me to read a review you may have left on there unless it manages to get to the top. Feedback is important to me, so yeah. Also, it would be great if you PMed me on LBPC as opposed to on my PSN, as the message inbox is getting quite full (I have a lot of unread mail - due to not being on LBP for a few days and messages piling up), and I don't really have the time to check them all. Thanks!

Hey all!
Nice - looks like my level's getting a warm welcome! That pleases me...

Anyone got any problems or anything with it? Would love to hear what you guys fixed - as far as I heard, the main complaint was to do with the text moving too fast, so I've now changed that so the text is on screen for a little longer - if it's still too short - just let me know!

Great level! I can't wait to play more. My only complaint was the words went away to fast, but I played it at about the same time you fixed that, so I don't know if they're still to fast or are better now. I'll play again and check some time.2011-01-24 23:34:00

Hey!
Thanks for the comments. You mentioned that it's too short - well, it is still a DEMO, right? SO that means more is on it's way - just not yet! Yup - text has been slowed down a little - but if it's still too fast, I'll give it another tweak!

@Ranger - nope, it's remade. I figure there's a reason MM don't want these levels ported, and that's fine by me. So yeah... it's different, but the same! I prefer this version anyway!

when will more capters be released?

Not totally sure yet. I'll probably release them chapter by chapter - but I haven't got an actual timeline stamped down yet. Soonish though, I hope. Ideally there'd be another chapter out by the end of this week/beginning of next week.

I saw this a while ago and was amazed at how awesome it looked. Kudos for the investigation scene: that was beautiful. I haven't played Heavy Rain, but if it's anything like this, Imma grab it now! But in all seriousness, I loved this level and I look forward to more releases from you.2011-01-25 05:59:00

Hey there!

The investigation scene (well, one of them) is on it's way.

Any further problems with the level?

I have to admit that this is one of the best ideas yet, the things i like about this level the most are about the doors when the can be opened at certain times, the dark scenery to boost the emotions of the level and that little talking box thingy, but overall great level.2011-01-25 22:51:00

Mmmmm, yes, this was very cool. The menu was a nice surprise and was fun to use, not confusing at all.

It was a bit dark, though. I know it's intentional, to boost the atmosphere, and different TVs have different brightness,
but all I could think about was 'Man, it's dark.' Maybe in the main menu you could have a 'settings' section? Where you could set brightness and things. Maybe not. It's fine already.

But yeah, great level!

I loved this level in the BETA, it was one of my favourite levels there. Queued! Can't wait for more......

I think you should make it like a TV Series, so instead of chapters your have episodes and each episode they advance their searches or something and maybe more cases come along to be solved but they're all related? As in, another killer comes in and kills people for the killer you're trying to find.

Chapters are just as good though

I can't remember exactly, but I remember the BETA level looking much better in the detail apartment. And much longer too!

Nice level, even though It's incredibly short and didn't really showcase what the wonderful beta level did.

Hey!

Yeah, this level is pretty short at the moment. But remember - when the DEMO was first released in the beta, it was pretty much like this - except smaller. I've extended the detective's apartment, because I feel he may be needing to spend more time in it - although detail is lacking a little bit - but I'm not sure to what extent. It's much bigger than in the beta, and I can't really figure out what isn't there that was in the beta.

The next chapter kind of showcases the main investigation work - and that should be out pretty shortly. Think of it of the demo part 2 - as in order to fully enjoy a demo, and to fully showcase a game, I agree a little more is needed. Pretty much all the future chapters will also be included within the same level - or rather, access to those levels will be through the main level. A new menu is on the way too, which I feel is an improvement, and can offer more help and options.

Keep an eye on this space! And again, thanks for the comments and plays!

I played it again, it looks like you slowed the words down, it was a big improvement, but I'd say slow it down just a bit more and it'll be perfect.

Can't wait for the next chapter!

Awesome! Thanks for that - I'll slow the text down a little more then! Glad you wanna see the next chapter - hard at work on it!
I reckon with the next chapter I'll also release a new main menu - so (for everyone) feedback and preferences on that would be pretty cool!

Is there anything anyone specifically kinda wants to see in this series - any kinda features of anything?

Also, I reckon the level badge is a little.... well, plain?
Any good ideas on different kinds of simple designs to feature on a level badge - too much complication often looks weird on a level badge? Any ideas welcome!

Well like some one said, a lighting option for those with dark TV's would be nice, and maybe an interrogation mini game for interviewing suspects and witnesses.

As for the patch maybe add the end of a car like in the menu of your beta level.

Well actually I do.

In the kids room, with the bottles, you can enter the small space where the tv/computer is. If you do that, you die. The level just stops functioning after that.

I was sad after that so I didn't finish the level. But I'll do it soon. Lots of love, blizzard! <3

Just tried out the demo today. I got to the start of chapter 1 but can't seem to progress. When the sackbot says to the car that pulls up that it's a crime scene and the X cursor appears, I click the X button and the car lights flicker but nothing else happens. I tried restarting the level but that didn't resolve the problem. Maybe something broke during your last tweak?

Aside from that, awesome atmosphere!

Hey there!
Sorry about the detective dying - that's not meant to happen! I got a report about that a few days ago, and I fixed it as soon as I could - so it should be fixed now. if it's not, please let me know!

As for the beginning of Chapter 1, try holding down the X button instead. I should probably have made that clearer, and will do so. Not right now though - I reckon I'll try and chill out for a few days first! But I'll get round to it - don't worry!

I'm not sure quite how I'm going to continue making this series - I mean, I definately will, but I might have to trim down what I have in mind a little, as I'm not sure if time/space is on my side - too many chapters may make it too long, and I might not have enough room to put down all the chapters, as well as it being quite a time consuming process. But it'll definately get finished.

Is there anything in particular anyone wants to see? Like, in terms of scenes or sequences?

Anyway, thanks for all the support!

That's a given

I've slowed down the subititles slightly in the Prologue - and I may try and shorten the subtitle's length in Chapter 1.
I was also wondering if anyone wanted any tutorials in how to do certain things in the future? I've had many many requests for some, and was also wondering which kind of tutorials would be the most important - in terms of, what do you want to know? This will be a secondary target - The main game comes first. But I'd like to be able to help if I can at all...

The menus, I already know how to make a menu, but my design isn't perfect, and it would be great to be able to see yours.

When you examine the painting of the family. The word thier should be spelled their. And I have minor gripes with you story over all. Don't get me wrong I am loving this. Just sometimes your text seems a little blunt, or seems to include unnecessary things.

Currently playing through this my second time to play the update I'm at the HOD section.

Keep up the good work

Edit(s?)

In the son's room when you examine his bed. it says "The beds made" It should say "The bed's made" or "The bed is made" I'm not trying to attack you or anything but I believe a story based level should have proper grammar and spelling and everything to show off just how mature us LBP'ers CAN be when we try, you know?
I'll probably continue updating this post, or posting new posts if this one gets buried.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'm gong to keep tweaking the menu - just changing some fonts around and stuff, but nothing too major. I'll try and publish a tutorial at some stage for you though!

@Luke - Thanks! I appreciate all the suggestions and feedbacks - and yup, I am aware there are a few typos in there, and I'm on my way fixing them. In fact, quite a few of them HAVE been fixed on my moon - I just haven't republished yet. You say some of the stuff mentioned in the text seems unnessecary - could you elaborate? The way I see it, some of things may seem unnessecary now, but may seem more important later. Could you perhaps give some examples?

Thanks though - I like suggestions being made and constructive feedback - and I appreciate the way you talked about it, as opposed to "Hey! Dude - you can't spell!". Nothing's ever perfect, and sometimes things slip through the cracks. I like people reminding me of them, so I can then try to improve. I said nothing's ever perfect, but I'll still try and keep improving.

Cheers! I look forward to hearing from you again!

Great level. As soon as I played it, I tracked you down to ask for any behind the scenes footage?
I'm hoping to create a similar themed game and some tips / behind the scene documents on your level would help greatly.

Thanks for (if) any help and the awesome level!

This is absolutely amazing. I played the latest chapter the other night and thought it was excellent. I'm really loving where this is going.

It's a great demonstration of what is now possible in LBP. You have got the atmosphere and feel of the story absolutely spot.

The control scheme is also top notch! There's a lot of levels out there at the minute that are great, but you're having to learn that many new controls that it detracts from the experience because most of the time you're having to remember what you have to press to do something instead of enjoying the level. Here you've created a system that is simple and effective but also very open and allows you as the creator to decide what the player gets to see.

I can't wait to see what you do with this! Keep up the awesome work!

Hey there!

Wow, wasn't sure if this thread was going to be revived or not - I think it's been a while since the last post! Thanks for doing it though!

I'm really pleased that you enjoyed the level - the making of it has taking many many hours - and only the Prologue and Chapter 1 have been released! Unfortunately I've been a little busy recently with all sorts of different things - so now probably wouldn't be a good time to be able to show you some of the behind the scenes stuff. But, ask a question, and I'd be more than happy to try and explain it to you in more detail! Unfortunately, again, some of these things are very hard to explain how they work, whether they are simple or not. Thank you very much!

@Jack = thanks very much for the praise! Like I said, it's taken a lot of times to make it work properly, and at the same time to do something which I'm pleased with! I'm sure you know this just as much as anyone - just because a level works and looks ok, there's always that nagging feeling that you haven't quite achieved what you could have. I've actually got another slightly better version on my moon - and although it doesn't differ much to the untrained eye, the logic is way neater now!

I've actually wanted to do something like this for a very long time. I mean, when people watch TV crime shows, they often must think "That looks cool. I'd love to do that!". Now obviously not everyone actually wants to join the police (and besides, it probably isn't as exciting as it looks on TV anyway.), but I wanted to give people that excitement on LBP, and the tense not knowing where the investigation will go. I also love making my own mystery, and actually there is a logical, and totally plausible reason for everything that happens in this level - no supernatural spooky stuff, or great big monsters to see! That's something not many games do - realism. Obviously some stuff has to be littlebigplanetised!

Controls are easy for a reason - like you said. If it's too tricky, then it takes comfort away from the actual game and story. Story is very important here, so I don't want people distracted by something as little as not being able to work the controls properly.

Anyway, the rest of the game is being made, and some of the levels are about halfway finished. The whole story, and what happens in each level, has all already been carefully plotted out. People often ask, why isn't it out yet? But although some bits have been finished, and could easily be published, I don't want to do that, because if, at a later date, I want to change something, then it's a little hard to do so, because the previous level has been published and played already. So the rest will be avaliable, and published, all at once. Just bear with me!

Anyway, I'm rambling slightly here - so I apologise for that. But, to recap, Thanks for playing, and I'm overjoyed at the response to what I've created.

Cheers!
