Emitters - please explain

I'm trying to figure out how emitters work in more detail. The tutorial and video in game start to explain the details of the tool... and then says it's all scientific mumbo jumbo before they get to the good bits.

What specifically I am trying to work out is how the number emmitted/max emmited things work. I build an emitter... and sometimes it spawns stuff, and sometimes it does not. I have them tied to a grab switch, so I want to try and limit what it emitts and not just spawn forever or whenever the objects get disolved. To be even more specific, I'm working with score bubbles. I don't want a set up where it spawns an infinite amount of balls while one player holds and another person collects.

I've found a player created chest that seems to have what I would guess would be a magnetic switch/disolve combo to turn the thing off, and I could try and reverse engineer it...

But really, I think if I better understood the emmit numbers concept better I might be able to work around something simpler... or at least understand why sometimes it spawns and sometimes it just won't do anything, either in create or play mode.

Sometimes the problem can be fixed by making the max spawn number very high, say, 100... but this seems stupid when I am just trying to make three objects appear. Again sometimes adjusting this number works, sometimes decreasing it helps, but then it stops, and it won't work again until I increase the number by a ridiculous amount, say 20 extra to spawn just 3.

I'm guessing that the thermometer meter might have something to do with the problem, if that could be explained it might help with my understanding even more.

I think. . . and I am just guessing here. . . that any items spawned in create mode count against the max emitted even if they have since disappeared. So try deleting your emitter and replacing it all while paused, then go into play mode and see if it spawns in the correct number of items.2008-11-10 04:15:00
