Replicate the Blob Boss from Invasion of the Body Invaders

Archive: 1 post

Hello everyone. I was really impressed with the boss battle in the Invasion of the Body Invaders stage. I've been trying to figure out how to replicate it to get some practice with the new tools.

The boss is an eyeball surrounded by independently moving blobs. They completely surround the eyeball and follow it around. You can see the boss here (http://guides.ign.com/guides/19675/page_36.html).

I can't figure out how to get this to work myself.

Apologies, I know this is long, but its a rundown of what I've attempted so that you can get a clear picture of what I've tried and what you might be able to suggest would help.

I created an object with a controllinator. We'll just call this object the "vehicle" for now. I can fly the vehicle around with an advanced mover and an antigravity tweak. The vehicle has a green tag.

I also created small blobs that have an antigrav tweak as well. I can get the blobs to follow the vehicle around by using followers tuned to the green tag (the green tag is on the vehicle). The sensor has a minimum range far enough to keep one blob from unintentionally pushing my vehicle, but still sticking close.

When I move around the blobs chase the vehicle. So far so good. The problem is that they all end up on one side of the vehicle. Once I stop moving, the blobs push into each other, which then pushes them into my vehicle, making the vehicle move unintentionally. They won't surround it like they do in the boss battle mentioned above.

So then I thought I could maybe just make all the blobs repel each other and stay attracted to the vehicle.

I put blue tags on the blobs as well as a blue tag sensor with a small radius covering just enough space for one blob to sense another blob. I also added a second follower set to flee. The blobs repelled each other, but now they wouldn't follow my vehicle. I figured that the game probably doesn't allow you to have two followers active on one object.

So then I tried adding a blue tag sensor that turns on the flee-follower, and also connects to a NOT switch that turns off the regular-follower.

My line of thought was that this would make the blobs follow the vehicle until they got to another blob. They would then repel off the other blobs just long enough to reactivate the regular follower that would make them attach to the vehicle.

What actually happened is they would start to fly towards the vehicle, then start flipping out when they got near other blobs. They would jump back and forth, going in and out of the blue tag range. They still wouldn't surround my vehicle.

That's about where I gave up and decided I needed some help from you guys. What can I do to make this work? I'm willing to start over if this was the wrong approach to take. I'm open to any ideas.

Thanks in advance!
