The Abandoned Coal Mine(now with pictures AND a video preview/ brief tutorial)
Archive: 41 posts
My first level. I put a ton of time and effort into this. You pretty much ride a mine cart into the unknown. I wont give anything away. This level is practically built from scratch, all the little vehicles and everything are of my own design. It's a bit difficult, but i hope that you all will check it out. Part 2 is now live and i will post details on it soon, as well as a video. This video should help you all out quite a bit. WARNING: Spoilers included within this tutorial/preview of this level. Enjoy =) 3dx9hL8oZfM http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/XBrianDeadX/P1010645.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/XBrianDeadX/P1010648.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/XBrianDeadX/P1010649.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/XBrianDeadX/P1010650.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/XBrianDeadX/P1010651.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/XBrianDeadX/P1010652.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/XBrianDeadX/P1010653.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/XBrianDeadX/P1010656.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/XBrianDeadX/P1010657.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/XBrianDeadX/P1010658.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/XBrianDeadX/P1010661.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/XBrianDeadX/P1010666.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/XBrianDeadX/P1010665.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/XBrianDeadX/P1010667.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/XBrianDeadX/P1010641-1.jpg | 2008-11-09 21:30:00 Author: xbriandeadx Posts: 134 |
THAT WAS BRILLIANT!!! so brilliant in fact that my ps3 couldn't handle it and had a ton of lag. There was a couple of times where I got unfairly stuck but other that that it was absolutely brilliant! So I say bravo and that I hope any levels I ever post are even half as good as yours! | 2008-11-09 22:03:00 Author: cursedbalcomb Posts: 16 |
Ick. Yeah there's a tiny bit of lag. Ive tried to getting rid of it, but no matter what i do it won't go away. I'm glad you enjoyed it though ^^ If anyone knows what i need to do to get rid of the lag let me know please XD. And...expect a second part to this level ;D | 2008-11-09 22:25:00 Author: xbriandeadx Posts: 134 |
yeah it's even cooler now that i fixed the lag. lol..Check it out guys. And I need some more people who are brave enough to get through the whole level cmon now. it's a bit difficult and a bit lengthy but it's worth it i promise! XD | 2008-11-10 22:38:00 Author: xbriandeadx Posts: 134 |
Sounds good. I'll check it out tonight. | 2008-11-10 23:30:00 Author: docpac Posts: 601 |
Nice job, its pretty cool ; ) | 2008-11-11 00:44:00 Author: BloodFlameX Posts: 349 |
the lag definetly isnt completely fixed for me, what do you yhink is causing it? because the level doesn seem to have many small objects that would cause slowdown, thats very strange, your level shouldnt have lag | 2008-11-11 03:20:00 Author: Gondito Posts: 1082 |
oh what? theres still lag for you? D= yeah i don't understand why either. maybe its your connection? i have no idea lol. i stripped the level down a ton and made every adjustment i could make to cut back on lag without significantly altering the level hmm...thats strange stuff. | 2008-11-11 03:24:00 Author: xbriandeadx Posts: 134 |
I pulled the elevator up too high and I couldn't get it back down when I was rescuing the coal miner. D: | 2008-11-11 04:09:00 Author: Tyler Posts: 663 |
ick. alright tyler ill see what i can do that's something ive tried fixing a ton of times but i can't seem to figure out how. i need to make some kind of "elevator call" switch alright i fixed it =) thanks for pointing that out to me i also adjusted the difficulty on some parts | 2008-11-11 22:49:00 Author: xbriandeadx Posts: 134 |
I just tried playing your level and the message "could not load level" appears. i was really looking forward to trying it! | 2008-11-12 21:26:00 Author: Unknown User |
i think that might be a server issue. i get that sometimes on levels when the server is acting up or when my internet connection is being lame Alright guys i added some visuals for everyone to see and what not and part 2 is halfway finished, ill keep you all updated on the second part to this. (it's halfway complete) | 2008-11-13 20:37:00 Author: xbriandeadx Posts: 134 |
oh my god... It lags because no machine on Earth can handle this much awesomeness! It's amazing, really | 2008-11-15 01:04:00 Author: Hadrien Posts: 3 |
what part are you having lag on? it seems like half the people that play it don't have too much trouble, yet another half just complain about how laggy it is. i don't understand x_x | 2008-11-15 01:15:00 Author: xbriandeadx Posts: 134 |
Impressive for a first stage. I can't wait for part 2 XD. | 2008-11-18 00:10:00 Author: dip Posts: 22 |
thanks dip XD yeah the second one is proving to be a difficult stage to set up. Hopefully ill have it finished by the end of the week. | 2008-11-18 05:07:00 Author: xbriandeadx Posts: 134 |
Beat part 2 of this stage with brian, died alot of times but the stage was quality. and look out for a dip/brian collab whenever a patch is released. | 2008-11-23 21:38:00 Author: dip Posts: 22 |
Hey man, thanks for the comments you left on mny level. I tried this a couple of days ago and I enjoyed it. I appreciate creators who try to make everything custom because that is part of my personal design aesthetic. One problem was after trying to exit the mine on the vehicle it got stuck near the spinning horns and would not go further so I was unable to finish. Please fix this problem and I will try again. | 2008-11-24 01:11:00 Author: OCK Posts: 1536 |
I don't understand how that happened. Maybe it was just a huge glitch/ultra rare happening? I just ran through a few times and i didn't have any trouble with it. I encourage you to check out the video I posted. It's a preview/tutorial that i believe may be very helpful to you. And no problem Ock. I was happy to play your level because of how custom everything was. Originality is what a lot of levels lack, that's why i go by the same criteria of trying to make everything custom. I appreciate your feedback and hopefully we can do a joint project in the future | 2008-11-24 01:26:00 Author: xbriandeadx Posts: 134 |
Hi I tried playing this again so I could get the key to access your new level but I now I know what all this talk of lag is about lol. After bringing the miner up the elevator and continuing on without him the level turns into lag city I have no idea what could be causing this but if half the people playing are experiencing this then that might explain why you may not have as many hearts as you may deserve. I will try again later, the part where you have to take the winch down the "walls of death" (my own name for the section of the level) is tough Btw, you may want to consider making the sequel of the level accessible without a key, just a thought. | 2008-11-24 08:19:00 Author: OCK Posts: 1536 |
Thanks for the feedback Ock. yeah i noticed there is a slight slowdown in that area, for me and other friends of mine who have played it. Lag city for others lol..I think it breaks down to one's internet connection. However, I want to get rid of the slight slowdown/lag completely. I've tried everything except taking that part out completely. haha. I cut back on the lighting, i took out 98% of the gas that was once killing the level. I stripped that part of the level to a thin wall and a few lights pretty much so i have no idea what the problem might be. Haha! I like that name Yeah it is tough I agree. But what would a boss battle be without a challenge? Yesss I have been considering that....I might just do that, although the story wouldn't flow as well if everyone didn't see the ending to this one. We'll see | 2008-11-24 08:34:00 Author: xbriandeadx Posts: 134 |
Regarding the connection, I live in Japan which has the FASTEST broadband speeds in the world so I don't think it's necessarily that You could make a note in the description of the Coalmine level saying it is the first of a two part series, I think that would work | 2008-11-24 08:40:00 Author: OCK Posts: 1536 |
lol for sure. Thanks for the advice Ock i owe you one. XD I think ive fixed the lag problem you were talking about. I had to change things around quite a bit but it runs smoother than ever now. Whenever you get the chance to try it again, please let me know if it's still giving you trouble. It runs just like the rest of the level now so i do believe i have done it | 2008-11-24 09:46:00 Author: xbriandeadx Posts: 134 |
Awesome level, though I got the key stuck in a wedge and broke it trying to get it out. Second time though, I made it. Good level. (and is this really your first level?) | 2008-11-24 20:28:00 Author: whatisnarwhal Posts: 164 |
Awesome level, though I got the key stuck in a wedge and broke it trying to get it out. Second time though, I made it. Good level. (and is this really your first level?) Thanks. This really is my first level I was just being as thorough as possible and seeing that kind of comment lets me know that i did a good job. Ive had that comment numerous times before. I don't know if people are calling me a liar or complimenting me lol. In all honesty though, this IS my first level and it took me forever to complete just because i was new at this whole thing. I spent hours and hours getting familiar with how to create things and incorporated everything i learned into my level as i went on. I focused heavily on 4 things -lighting -camera angles -making everything as original as possible -sticking to the theme -making the story flow Anywho..Thanks for checking the level out I'm glad you enjoyed it | 2008-11-25 07:59:00 Author: xbriandeadx Posts: 134 |
This IS the best level on LittleBigPlanet. Hands down. Not only does it display originality at its best, but it's just plain fun! This really is what LBP is all about...creating and letting others enjoy the level. Your level amazed me to no end...from the very beginning (the descent) I was completely enthralled by everything from the vehicle to the lighting (excellent use of lighting btw). Also, that "Welcome" sign is great . I love how everything is original and themed...the theme was a great choice and flowed well with the little story you created. For the first time playing a level on LBP, I found myself interested in the story of all things. AMAZING work there. The addition of the miner was clever and entertaining, and the boss was just unbelievably great...scary, challenging, but still enjoyable. This had just the right amount of difficulty. My favorite part was when I was walking upwards and that music started playing..I loooove what you did with that! It was chilling and mysterious. Overall, this is the most original and intriguing level I have played so far. Honestly, it is my favorite. This is definitely a level worth playing, and then playing again. | 2008-12-08 02:43:00 Author: din0elle Posts: 5 |
Found a bug in the second stage: When you reach the point when there are three layers of long corridors, and the 2nd one has a switch block and an enemy, and the 3rd one has a dissolve switch that you need to drag the block towards, if you don't kill the demon the first time through, it keeps going right into the wall and gets stuck, making further progress impossible. Just thought I'd point this out, only reason I couldn't beat level first time through Other than that one bug, it's a good set of stages overall. The first one is fresh and original, and while being almost impossible to see anything has a great atmosphere to it. The second one focuses less on tech-jumping and more on timing and monsters, and while definitely trying to be different from the first one can't help but feel a little too similar still (plus it has the aforementioned glitch). All in all, excellent work, you've definitely impressed me. | 2008-12-08 04:17:00 Author: Shining Aquas Posts: 353 |

Thought the abandoned coal mine was a great level, hearted it, and played to the end. I especially liked the bit where the miner dies, and then his ghost comes back to haunt you and blames you for leaving him behind.. great stuff! But the "his" world level was very disappointing after it. Just too many annoying deaths and bits where u have to be in the right plane or you die. I gave up. | 2008-12-08 11:14:00 Author: chillum007 Posts: 228 |

I'm sorry you feel that way about the second level you might want to watch the vid i made to help you get through the level. The level takes some time to master and i think its great the way it is. I don't give out freebies https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=5181 This vid will definitely help you, there's a bunch of annotations telling you what to do on what parts. I hope this helps If you don't want to watch that then i can tell you one very important thing. You MUST be on 2nd plane from the foreground to defeat the toy devils. In addition, you must jump towards them since they shoot fire wheels at you. This will help you avoid getting hit by them. | 2008-12-09 20:15:00 Author: xbriandeadx Posts: 134 |

Sorry about the vid, any idea why it wouldn't work for you? i remember randomly finding one of your levels when i was searching (i like levels with mines) and i remember really thinking it was a very nice level! good work! Haha yeah i remember that too. You were actually one of the first to play it It's evolved quite a bit since then Thanks again kappa and please let me know if there are any levels that you and your husband are working on, i would love to play test them. I found your level to be very enjoyable. | 2008-12-13 07:40:00 Author: xbriandeadx Posts: 134 |
I just took my friends through your abandoned coal mine level last night. And I found out how bad I am at video games because I never got through it the first time. That's a long level, but it's also an AWESOME level. | 2008-12-13 12:46:00 Author: xkappax Posts: 2569 |
I played this level just now, and it's really good. It had nice atmosphere, and a different feel from what I'm used to. I did have a couple issues though. The first time through, the cart at the very end: I jumped out immediately after entering to go after the score bubbles I missed. My cart moved just a little bit so that I couldn't swing myself back into it and I had to restart even though I was near the end. The second time through, I had a little bit less patience, so when the first cart at the very start of the level hit the stopper, I immediately jumped out and died. A second cart was emmited, but the first cart was still there and the second one broke the first one, and neither of them would move so I had to start over again. Couldn't this be fixed by simply setting the emitter to a max emitted at once of one? I beat it the third time through. Minor issues or suggestions: The text often goes away before I finish reading it. The last launchy/springy thing near the end has a visible proximity switch whereas the others are invisible; just something I noticed. Some of the sounds, like the scream when the miner falls in the fire can be activated over and over by walking by there over and over. You could set it so that the switch that makes him fall in the fire also activates the sound, and then it only happens once. Despite my (really just minor) complaints, this is a really awesome level. It's got great atmosphere, and it's really well designed, and I gave it a 5/5. It's also extremely impressive for a first level. I haven't tried part two yet, but I look forward to it. Also, on a completely unrelated matter, xbriandeadx, what's your avatar from? I'm not big into anime, but for some reason I love that picture. | 2008-12-14 01:01:00 Author: Grethiwha Posts: 61 |

Part 2 is a bit more intense.( you will see what I mean when you play it, just read my posts on the "His" World thread if you're having any trouble. I know you will enjoy it if you enjoyed the first, if not then I know you will appreciate it because there's an obvious ton of effort put into it.) Like others have pointed out, the atmosphere in the level is very good. I did have a few moments, where it was hard to see certain jumps, but they were usually in areas that weren't too perilous. I did run into an issue where, after grabbing the miner with the key and taking him to the demon cart, I was knocked off by the spinning demon heads. Once of the horns hit me in the head and sent me flying, the key feel into the fire and I was stuck. That seemed to be the only major issue I ran into. Other than that, there was a bit of lag, but it didn't affect me too much. Oh, I also loved the part where the miner's ghost asks why I left him behind. Very creepy! Nice level. | 2008-12-14 15:54:00 Author: mrsupercomputer Posts: 1335 |

I just play your level two times, but i couldn't finish him. I must have left the second play at the level of the sponge bull heads (the problem was not your level, but my son, lol). All that i can say for now is : Great visual value! Your level is thematized and i love this a lot! Sure i'll play it again latter (and until the end). PS: A little bug: At my first play, the engine i drived at the start of the level ejected me in fire at the end of its course. Respawn at the previous checkpoint but... without the engine. Run sackboy, run... and die... I must completely restart the level. I didn't notice the problem the second time i played it. SYS | 2008-12-19 17:46:00 Author: Takelow Posts: 1355 |

It must be a one of those rarities that happen in any level. Ive updated and changed many things around in my level upon request and this is one of those things I have tested time and time again, but haven't had any trouble with it. I'll keep trying to see what happened exactly though. Thanks for your feedback | 2008-12-22 07:20:00 Author: xbriandeadx Posts: 134 |
