Aiming Emitters
Archive: 9 posts
You know the story level in LBP where you ride a camel and shoot things using a reticle on the screen? Did you notice how the lasers are emitted toward the reticle, no matter where it is? How is this done? I can't figure it out for the life of me, and I seriously need something similar for my level. A ceatinator won't work because a controlinator is being used. Any help would be awesome. | 2011-01-22 07:37:00 Author: inveni0 Posts: 7 |
I'm at work so can't build something to try it, but I'd suspect there's a tag on the reticle and the emitter is on something that has a rotator set to point at that tag. | 2011-01-22 08:05:00 Author: Balorn Posts: 92 |
Yes, that makes total sense. Only, I need to have the emitter in a microchip because the controlinator is working with a sackbot. I suppose I could have it controlling two things: The sackbot and a floating, invisible hologram rig with the emitter. Then, the hologram can move along with sackboy. I might give that a shot unless there's a trick to attaching things to a costumed sackbot. | 2011-01-22 14:40:00 Author: inveni0 Posts: 7 |
I also believe the lazers were set to follow tag. | 2011-01-22 15:11:00 Author: robotiod Posts: 2662 |
I also believe the lazers were set to follow tag. Aha! Now THAT makes sense. I think I can get it from here. Thanks! | 2011-01-22 16:09:00 Author: inveni0 Posts: 7 |
More specifically, the lasers would have been using a "look at" follower (to face the reticle) and a rocket mover (to make them move in the direction they're facing). It's a pretty clever system that is crazy effective while being fairly simple to build. By the way, if you want a rotating emitter on a sackbot, you can bolt a bit of holo-matter to a sackbot's neck the same way we used to be able to bolt things to sackboy's neck in lbp1 in create mode. | 2011-01-22 20:25:00 Author: Sehven Posts: 2188 |

Must try that, I've been using a follower but bolts might be slightly more thermo efficient | 2011-01-22 20:51:00 Author: Radishlord Posts: 706 |
Whether they're more efficient or not, they're more precise. Followers often have lag, but a bolt will keep it in a fixed position relative to your sackbot. Make sure you add a follower with zero speed, low accel/decel and with "allow layer change" set to ON so that it moves with you from layer to layer. | 2011-01-22 21:25:00 Author: Sehven Posts: 2188 |
I ran a test with followers and I think it will serve my purposes best. I actually don't need the player to aim, but I need the emitter to do its thing dependent on which direction the player is facing (up, down, left, right). I had been drawing up some wicked complicated mc designs, but in the end, the result the emitter gives is what matters. | 2011-01-22 21:59:00 Author: inveni0 Posts: 7 |
