http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh193/foreva-dead/LBDW_RAC_Banner.gif

As you guys are already aware, today was the last day release for LittleBigPlanet 2 in the UK and to help get things started, LBDreamWorld (http://lbdreamworld.com) is holding a crown contest to see who can make the best retro-style arcade game. The rules are simple - just get into LBP2 and recreate your favorite arcade game from the past. You can also make a completely original arcade game provided that it has a "retro-style" look and feel to it. I will post some screenshots and videos below of some examples of what we are looking for but know that they don't have to be exactly like the ones below. We encourage everyone to be creative and innovative. If you have an awesome idea for a level but not sure if it would fall within the contest guidelines, feel free to contact me about your idea or level so that the judges may assess whether it would be appropriate or not.

OFFICIAL CONTEST RULES:

I. All contest entries must be published before the contest end date - April 1, 2011 @ 11:59 PST.

II. If a contest entry is a collaborative work, the prize will be awarded to the person who published the level. Prizes will not be distributed amongst contributors.

III. All contest entries must be published in LBP2. Any contest entries not published in LBP2 will be ignored.

IV. All contest entries submitted must include the abbreviation LBDW in the level title.

V. Only one entry per contestant. Multiple entries will result in disqualification from contest.

VI. The level must be a retro-style arcade game. Levels do not need to be recreations of past arcade games. If you wish to be on the extra creative side and want to build something slightly different, please obtain approval from us prior to beginning work. Levels that do not meet the style guideline are subject to automatic disqualification.

VII. Published contest levels may not be made copyable until after the contest results are announced.

VIII. Levels may NOT be edited/republished after the contest end date. However, contest entries may be edited at any time after publishing provided that it is done prior to the contest end date.

IX. If for any reason we are not able to award the prize crown to the first place winner, an alternative prize may be substituted at our discretion. We also hold no responsibility should the crown code not work but we will make sure that the issue is addressed to the best of our ability.

*LBDreamWorld reserves the right to amend the official contest rules at any time without prior notification. If you have any questions/comments regarding the contest or contest rules, please contact me or make a post addressing your concern.*

When Does the Contest Start and End?

The contest begins officially today and will last 70 days ending on April 1, 2011 @ 11:59 PST. This should allow extra time for those who may need some time to get used to all the new tools and features currently set within LBP2. We know it may feel a little intimidating and overwhelming at first, but we are positive that people will get the hang of it soon enough. In the future, we may post a tutorial on how to get you started on making your own arcade level so make sure to check back every now and then for new announcements.

How Do I Submit a Contest Entry?

All you need to do is publish your retro-style arcade game in LBP2. We will then continue to evaluate all entries that are posted before the contest end date. If we suspect foulplay or any other disqualification measure, we will contact you to inform you or ask questions pertaining to the matter. Make sure to follow the rules when submitting an entry. All contest entries should include the abbreviation LBDW in the level title so that we may find entries with more ease. If you want to be extra safe, you may publish about your level here and we will make sure that it gets reviewed. After the contest end date has passed and we have deemed the number of entries to be sufficient, we will begin the judging process which we have allocated a maximum of 15 days thereto. We reserve the right to extend the contest end date if necessary if we feel there are not enough entries or that people may need the additional time for revisions and etc. The judging will be done by myself and the other staff at LBDreamWorld.

How Will My Level Be Evaluated?

We have put together a score rubric which lists 5 categories - ingenuity, gameplay value, visuals, audio, and overall impression. All scores can range from "exceeds expectations" to "poor". The judges will be prompted to utilize the scoring rubric when evaluating the contest entries. The more original and more creative your level, the higher your ingenuity score will be. Add on some amazing looking visuals that fit the contest guidelines and top it off with custom music and awesome game play and you're sure to be in the top of the list. We will also mention that we put in a fair amount of consideration to all entries and make sure that none are left behind. However, if you have good reason to believe that your level may have been overlooked, please feel free to PM me about it so that we may ensure that your level is reviewed. I also want to assure everyone that all levels are evaluated strictly on the quality of the level and nothing more. We do not give any certain advantage to anyone regardless of their standing with me, the site staff, or Media Molecule.

How Will I Be Notified of the Contest Results?

We will post the results here and on our website. There are three winners of the contest with the first place winner (hopefully) getting the prize crown, and two runner ups which will receive honorable mention. If you feel that you deserved to win but did not and are concerned that your level was not reviewed sufficiently or at all or think that the contest results may be biased, please feel free to contact me or the LBDreamWorld staff with your concerns. We will work with you to ensure that your level was properly evaluated and will discuss the reasons why we felt your level was not sufficient to be considered the winner. Please only submit honest and reasonable queries for why your level wasn't chosen. Along with the winning entries, we will also post our reasoning for why we chose the ones we did and what we thought made them stand out the most. Again, if you wish to challenge our contest results, please do so in a formal and polite manner and we will contact you to discuss your concerns.

So What's In It For Me?

We are proud to announce a rare prize crown to the first place winner.

What If I Still Have Questions or Concerns?

Feel free to contact me via PM, make a post here, or contact the staff at LBDreamWorld. We will do our best to answer people's questions or address any matters we may have overlooked. We look forward to seeing what the LBP community s capable of creating and I already know they will not disappoint.

With this said, I wish everyone the best of luck and can't wait to see what this amazing community is able to come up with.

BTW, the video games featured in this video are perfect examples of what we're looking for:

I have a couple ideas on what to make...

ET. (LOLJK)

I love the game "Ladybug." Might try to make that.

We have high hopes of securing the rare prize crown to our first place winner but we are not 100% certain yet. I have emailed Spaff_Molecule with our contest proposal and we received a response telling us to "go for it." I would still like to hear confirmation from at least one other source before we can guarantee the crown for sure but I would say that's pretty sufficient enough.Wake me up when you are certain.2011-01-25 19:00:00

Can you make your own retro style game that you made all on your own, because i was thinking of doing a retro RTS. or can you just do a real retro game like pac man?2011-01-26 23:01:00

You can make whatever you want as long as it has a retro-style look and feel to it. You will have a better chance of winning if your entry is more unique and creative than an original arcade game. If you wanted to do a game like pac-man, we would suggest adding your own twist to it or just add something to spice it up a little bit. If you just want to make an accurate recreation of a retro game, we would highly advise you to make sure you have it down perfectly otherwise it will be harder to compete with those who add their own flair to it.

tl;dr friendly version: Yeah dude, make whatever you want.

As zerokingx has stated, it is one level per person, however you can use as many level links as you wish, provided all linked levels are sub-levels and you have only made one actual game. Such reasons for using sub-levels may be that you wish to add game levels, a tutorial on how to play the game, a main menu, dificulty i.g 3 sub levels leading off, 1 for each of: easy, normal and hard etc

ps if need be, you may quote this, as i will be one of the judges judging the competition

No, only one arcade game per entry but you can use level links to continue on in the same game or have different versions of the same arcade game.

I'm gonna get started within the next couple days.

So basically, I have to think of some new arcade game mechanic, since you said that creative is better.

Just not sure exactly. May as well spend a bit playing arcade games on a flash game site.

Is it really wise to allow your level to be copyable? Other users may republish it as their own to ruin your chances of winning the competition...

Actually, it is against the contest rules to make it copyable during the contest period. I'm afraid we're going to have to ask you to postpone the copyable version until the end of the contest.

Don't worry, you're not disqualified. We just don't want people copying others work and making changes to the point where they think they can call it their own. But by all means feel free to have a copyable version available as soon as the contest results are announced.

I'm considering entering my Pac-Man level, but there's another game I really want to remake and I think it'll be much more enjoyable / have fewer bugs. The contest doesn't end for a while so I'll have enough time to make it, but before I do I wanted to know if it would qualify. I don't want to give away what it is exactly, but it's a minigame from a PS1 game. The minigame itself follows the arcade formula (play until you die, hope for highscore), but I don't know if something from 1999 would qualify as "Retro".2011-02-10 05:40:00

That might be pushing it a little. I would suggest giving it a little bit more of a retro feel to it. It shouldn't have the fancy, well-polished graphics nor modern sounding music. It should focus on the traditional gaming values only found within retro classic arcade games.
