I've come up with a neat way to backup all lbp1,2 game files as well as any other game saves. First of all it involves the use of USB drives and a large external hard drives. This tutorial is based on backup hierarchies. It is best that you create a file called Playstation Backup separate from pre made files. In this backup folder, create another folder(s) called ps3, and then folders daily, weekly, monthly, yearly in that folder 1. Daily backup (optional) using USB memory, connect to the ps3, go to ps3 game saves and systematically copy saves of games that you have played on that day. This is an optional step for people that play games for way more than 6 to 10 hours a day. This is what is called a grand-child backup, the backup can be used to recover corrupt data of the games that you are playing at the moment. These files can be back upped to a file called daily, after every day the daily files can be back replaced on the USB drive and/ or computer. 2. Weekly backup, similar to the above step, copy all files that have been played within the week. This step is best for people that do not play games as heavily as every day. This backup is called the child backup, this backup can be used if files become corrupt, or deleted by accident, these files are on a separate, USB drive. These files can be placed in folder called weekly, on this drive and the files are replaced on the pc at the end of the week. 3. Monthly backup, again similar to the above steps, copy all files that have been played within the month. Depending on the amount of gaming you do this could be back upped using the backup option in the settings, This will create it's own files but the files can be moved to a folder called Monthly. When this backup is made it will be placed into a file called PS3 but this will be moved. This backup is called the father backup. It will envolve a large backup store of some kind depending on the size of the ps3 hard drive. To restore from the monthly backup, place the monthly backup into the ps3 folder and load it into the ps3 and use the restore from backup option. This can be used to restore from corrupt data and massive failures. 4. Yearly backup, this is a little different, this is a backup of everything, same as stage 3 , it uses the backup and restore options. This requires the largest of external hard drives, once everything is back upped into the ps3 folder, place it into the yearly folder on the pc and any hard drives. This is called the grand-father backup. This is an assurance that if anything goes wrong, the game the game saves are there. And that is it, this can be repeated for the PSP lbp, and other PSP files, minis, and ps1,ps2 files, that way there are 4 versions of back ups, for different devices, this could be used for different devices and stage 4 can be part of backing up an entire pc. Only problem with that method is that should you lose your PS3 to YLOD, some of the backups will be worthless. If you attempt to restore an LBP[2] profile onto a new PS3, it will appear to the system as being copied from another user, and you'll lose the ability to collect trophies... and worse, as some have discovered, an LBP profile restored in this way can't be imported into LBP2. The only way to avoid this would be to do a full system backup using the option from the XMB.

Does the full system back-up copy saved game files that don't 'allow' copies to be made? I recently backed up all my saves and I noticed that 2 out of my 30 games would not allow me to copy the saved data: Star Wars Force Unleashed 2 and Killzone 2. @Aya and Dark Tails - I do full system back ups once every few months, and I back up my saved games on my USB flash drive regularly (especially when playing LBP2). I also back up those saved files to my PC, and then they automatically back up to a program called Drop Box (free online storage). I guess if I really want to be proactive in keeping my LBP2 profile up to date I'll need to do a system back up more frequently.. but once I get 100% completion on my profile, probably no reason to go overboard anymore since you can back up your levels on a flash drive, PC, and Mm's servers (level locks). I'm particularly careful now because I'm one of the unlucky few that had their PS3 die on them while in create mode .. and I had nothing backed up, except for an old version of my level that was published locked on the Mm servers. I tend to learn the hard way

Does the full system back-up copy saved game files that don't 'allow' copies to be made? According to PS3 Manual, certain files can't be restored even from a system backup. The only backup which is guaranteed to work is a full system transfer to a second PS3. Kinda sucks, but that's what you get for buying into closed-architecture products. I do full system back ups once every few months, and I back up my saved games on my USB flash drive regularly (especially when playing LBP2). In retrospect, if you do regular copies of changed saves to flashdrive, you need only do a full backup if you change your local user account or PSN ID for some reason. To restore, you need only restore from last system backup, then patch any save changes from flashdrive. Okay, you're still screwed for copy-protected saves, but I don't have any of those. Saves only fail (in the sense they no longer 'belong' to you) when the embedded UID in PARAM.SFO no longer matches the UID for the user account, and the UID for a user account never changes. I've still yet to determine if a PSN account UID overrides a local account UID, or whether they're separate checks. YLOD can be fixed, and you can get everything back, but that's not the only thing that can go wrong, so backups are always wise.

Funny you should mention that - I got the YLOD today I looked up how to fix it so I'll be working on that Monday night. Thank goodness I had everything backed up about an hour or two before it happened. Also, thanks for the clarification. Star Wars FU2 is short enough that I could play it for a day or two and be back to where I was, and I honestly could care less about Killzone 2. Maybe this would be useful for another thread, but I found this three part video tutorial when searching how to fix the YLOD. Since you mentioned it can be fixed, are you familiar with these videos? And if so, does this guy really know what he's talking about? I used the method described here (http://www.yellowlight.co.uk/fix.php), which worked. Some say it's sufficient just to heat the system (say with a hairdryer) without dismantling, but it seems a bit risky to me. Better to concentrate the heat on the BGAs where it belongs.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I'm a little desperate at the moment. I had the YLOD last week and managed to get it back online to get all of my data off of it to transfer to a new Slim. After reading post #2, I decided to do a system backup onto a thumb drive to preserve my profile. There are three profiles in use in my family, and upon restoring they showed up as *User 1, *User 2 and *User 3. I noticed that user 1 had my profile backups in the data folder so I changed the user name and set that account as my PSN login. There was nothing in my game save folder so when I got to my pod in LBP2 and imported the last profile backup, everything comes back okay but I don't seem to be able to advance my pin achievements so I'm guessing the trophies won't work. Did the backup fail? I have the old PS3 here and can do a data transfer, but now I'm a little worried that it won't work either and it wipes the old drive when it finishes copying to the new drive, so I got one shot. Anyone successfully do this? I honestly don't really care about my other save data because I can redo it again, but I don't want to lose all my LBP data.
