Or am I just daft? For clarity's sake, I'm aware of the Music Player - I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about the in-game music that you place yourself as part of level creation. Is it now impossible to listen to it while you create?

if you mean the same way you did with music on your ps3 then i dont think so, but you could just activate it and let it play while you create but i think it will pause when you pause create with up on the D pad.

while floating put the music box down, connect a battery to it, then delete them and they play (till you hover over music in your popit)
