How to make a piston/winch only go one way?

Archive: 12 posts

How do people do it when you grab an object attached to a winch which goes up and doesn't go back down again? I really don't get it.. like how did mm make the skill crane in the construction site? I'm really confused about it lol. Thanks.2008-11-08 22:45:00

You set the grab switch to directional, and test it it out. If that doesn't work, try inverting it. Good luck =D2008-11-08 23:03:00

Hey, I've spent the last 40 minutes trying to find this out, haha. And I just found out.
I used a magnetic key, a door, and a piston.
Set the 'behavior' of your magnetic key switch (or whatever) to 'Direction'
Change the piston's option 'Backwards' to 'Yes'.
Voila, now my magnetic key gets the door open.

You need an intermediary trigger that will only activate once. I like to set up a matching key and switch. Put the key onto a piece of dissolve and make sure its within the switch's radius. Set the switch to "inverted" and "directional" so its only on when the key is not present. Then hook up your initial switch to the dissolve block, and set it to on/off. Now when you trip the first switch the key dissolves triggering the switch which would then tell the piston to reverse directions (retract instead of extending) thus opening your door or accomplishing any number of tasks you only want to happen once.2008-11-09 07:34:00

@Emigrate
Would the piston's options be in directions?

The piston does not have the Behaviour option, if that's what you meant by it.

Simply set the min and max length of the piston, set it to stiff (if you like) and have backwards 'yes', and the magnetic key switch's 'behaviour' option to 'direction'
Or set the magnetic key switch's 'Inverted' option to 'yes' and it's 'Behaviour' option to 'direction'. And the piston's 'backwards' option to 'no'.

but if you let go of the grab it should go back down, to make it stay up you need to make a permanent switch to make it stay up

Cheers!

I tried to make a similar one way type piston to open a flap type door. I tried to use a two way lever set to directional, but i couldn't attach it to the piston! Was i just being dumb or is it actually impossible to connect levers to pistons?

Anyway if it can be done this would be a solution to making a lift. Lever up - lift goes up. Lever down, lift goes down.

I did this in the new level I'm making (pistons+magnetic keys) to create nifty "rumbling" effects as doors open... Looks cool, really.

Took me a bit to figure it out...until I saw it in the Collector's Lair, where the bears are held captive.
