Bouncy stuff's not bouncy 'nuff [solved]

Archive: 11 posts

I was just playing around with the bounciness setting on the material tweaker and found that on 100% bounciness I'm getting something like 20% restitution with 100% bounciness... Which is not enough.

Has anyone played around with bounciness and can tell me what factors affect it? I've not really got time to investigate fully atm, but I'm sure I've seen bouncier things in story mode - the marshmallows minigame for eg.

Cheers.

Turns out reducing friction gets you a better coefficient of restitution - look down and thank Morgana's post pls

Maybe the pre-existing bounce of the object or material effects it... could even depend on what it bounces off of too.

I'll let somebody who can actually figure out handle figuring out.

Is it less bouncy than it was in the beta? I'll take a look when I go pick up the game in a few hours (well, maybe.... I'll probably forget by then and be wrapped up in playing the game). If nothing else, maybe an impact switch-mover combination can help.2011-01-18 15:30:00

i dunno if it's less bouncy than in the beta, but it's not very bouncy.

Seems you need to set the bounciness of the impacting object to 100% as well, which is pretty naff (though it does make sense from a physics perspective), as that means everything bounces off the surface. I just want a ball bouncing off of any and all surfaces with a high restitution.

Move / impact is gonna be unworkable in this scenario I think.

There were reports that some of the material tweaker options are relative to the original properties of the material, so it might be that you can only reduce the bounciness of a material with it. Perhaps you just have to find a material which is naturally bouncy?

Doesn't friction factor into that? Seemed like it on my pinball level. Purely a gut feeling though. Nothing scientific to back it up.2011-01-18 15:44:00

I tested this a little during the Beta (on metal material), and even then it was not really bouncy...
I think Aya is right, you can only reduce the bounciness of materials with it.

Nope, you are thinking of friction - you can increase the bounciness of objects (actually you can't reduce it, but then nothing in LBP inhenently bounces well anyway).

Boom - I don't need the objects to be frictive so set to 0 friction and I get lots of bounce... Too much if anything

I halped! I knew I learned something in the beta.

ps, check the floor - I think it must be cold since hell has obviously frozen over if I answered an rtm question.

Too late-- dang! I new this one too! I GRAVEL could have been responsible for Hell freezing over! Yeah they go crazy with no friction.

(Regular slick-willey-parade... and no, I don't know what that means.)
