anyone else tired of rotating sponges?

I am so tired of the rotating sponge obstacle. It seems like every user level I've played has some variation of this. I think it has been done to death.2011-01-17 22:59:00

Yeah I guess we can say it's over-used. But it still can be relevant I fun I guess, it really depends how much you focus on that and how it's presented.2011-01-18 01:50:00

Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best. And if they're used in a way that is still fun ,I don't see the problem. 2011-01-18 01:56:00

Absolutely!

Sure the spinning sponge has been overused but I love them. They're just simple fun, something I hope won't be lost in all the new tools of LBP2.

I still find it fun. I prefer the manually loose bolt sponge myself.2011-01-18 03:49:00

Yeah... can't stand 'em often they don't fit into a levels mechanics or storyline... it's like they just exist...a remenant of some pre-sack civilization... a giant alter to some round spinning sack-god.2011-01-18 03:56:00

It should be added, that any halfway decent gameplay mechanic is better than none at all. 2011-01-18 04:14:00

Jump and grab is a fundamental part of platform gaming. It's all about the delivery, not the method.2011-01-18 05:15:00

I find rotating sponges to still be fun, as long as it isn't over used in a level, and isn't bland looking. But that is with any obstacle really.2011-01-18 19:21:00

I agree with midnight about the loose bolt sponges. those are ok as far as being used to cross a gap or something. It's the rotating sponges used to get from bottom to top. despise 'em. I think I'll make a whole level of nothing but rotating sponges, little ones, giant ones, half fire ones, half electric ones, fast ones, slow ones, put in a whole bunch of rotating lights too. hmmmmmm (runs to drawing tablet)2011-01-18 20:47:00

You can have my rotating sponges when you rip them from my cold, dead hands! Heh.

But take heart. Now you can tweak anything to be grabable. So now you can have rotating metal, rotating stone, rotating glass....

Thinking about it, I don't think I've ever made any, neither have I seen them that much anymore. But yeah, sometimes they are overused, overtimes it's just right. I'd say more than 3 is pushing it.2011-01-20 08:06:00

Rotating sponges aren't overused...
They're a mechanic for gameplay, not some idea that someone came up with that's like the thousands of bomb and shark survivals we saw in LBP1.
Besides, it really depends on how they're used. And what levels' you're playing. Because if you play Tower of Whoop, and then twenty million other levels that you know are climb-the-tower or something along those lines, then yes, you are going to run into a lot of them, and yes, you probably will get fed up of them.

- Platforms/ Moving platforms
- Ropes.
- Use of jetpack with obstacles.
- Natural platforming.
- etc.

There ARE many ways, you know?
