Replay Script Recording?

Archive: 15 posts

I already know that there is a recording thread that looked at the possibility of recording, but what about saving something similar to replays, I had this idea while playing super smash brothers brawl.

Instead of video recording a scripted replay can be played instead that could be shared, such as highscore replays, something similar to gt5's high score replays sharing.

....what?
Care to explain more detailedly what er talking about?
Because I have no idea what you mean by that, maybe those who play GT5 do, but not everyone has it, you know? :l

Combining those ideas would just create a Theatre mode like in Black Ops...

How about another tool next to Take Photo, Record Video (Full-Screen or Sectioned). These videos can be up to 1 minute long and will be saved to your HDD with the unique format of .lbp - The will be a new Tool (similar to the scoreboard) where you can then import and play these movies on

So you can record in your level to create a tutorial, or prehap film your progress in a Bomb Survival - then create a showcase level of all your best moments?

I don't remember the exact threads, but peopole have already explained why you can't record videos in LBP, many times before, m8, so that's highly unlikely.

Demo recording (this is how this feature is called in PC games) is different it records game play and playback it in game engine, there nothing to do with video.

ACtually this feature is a key to not real-time ncodeing which allows video recording without carrying about CPU preference to handle gamplay

Within GT5, you have the ability to save replays, those replays can be uploaded to highscore leader-boards depending on a particular event, all replays are available to everyone to download as ghost data to try and beat. Sorry if it isn't that much clearer but it is difficult to explain in detail.

Theatre mode like in Black Ops and Uncharted 2.

Nice idea

Yeah that's what it boils down to.

Except there are a ton more things going on in LBP, but I'm sure it's something they're considering. It's not as simple as Black Ops or Uncharted 2 where it can say "Player X started moving forward" ... "Player Y stopped moving forward". The recording can be slapped on as its evaluating the physics and logic, but still, File I/O is expensive and it will add up eventually.

@Foofles, demo recording is usually based on dumping network protocol and play it back in time line. If game handles multiplayer it should handle demo recording, since both is about syncing the events.2011-01-15 21:32:00

Yeah it can use the same routine as for networking, but it's still a matter of streaming it out to file. I guess it wouldn't be a big deal if you don't have a billion things going on.2011-01-15 21:41:00

well they surly got some protocol for all those things, they just need to add some timeline in to it so it can be played back.

But i think the bigger issue here is fact that this feature is not so impotent for LBP then Uncharted or CoD that is based on regular matches and skill showoff

I think you guys are misunderstanding him. What I think he's saying is that it would be nice to have your playthrough of a level saved into a sackbot, which can be shown when other people are playing the same level.

Say I got the fastest time on a race level, then my fastest run would be saved, and if someone wanted to 'verse me' they could activate a sackbot that would replay what I did, so they know if they are doing better or worse.

I don't think he meant recording EVERYTHING that happens like in Reach's or Black Ops theater modes.

Oh the ghost recording, but thats much harder since it theory level can change shape dramatically due events on it and ghost would act strange in player perspective..... or else we back to demo recording, so player + level events2011-01-16 14:28:00

Ghost recording wouldn't be as easy to code, but... I think I know how to best implement this idea.

Replays have to be made of whole level runs only. At the beginnng of recording, the game will record only the actions for the sackpeople playing the game. The replay would simply be a playthrough of the level with prerecorded actions and "sackbots" as the players. There could also be an option to change views (for versus mode), and maybe a free-camera mode. This way, the only "recording" done is with sackbots, which can already be recorded.

The only downside is that the replay would have to remember the whole level, meaning:
-The replay would have to be an entirely new save, which takes up a lot of space, OR
-The replay would only work with existing levels that haven't been updated, OR
-The replay could only be viewed immediately after playing the level (while the data is still in the game's memory)

All in all, it would be a neat feature, but only if it's implemented correctly.

@EliminatorZigma thats what we been talking about since beginning of the tread

The replay would have to be an entirely new save, which takes up a lot of space,

I don't think so, all depends on how much action is in the level and how fat is protocol

-The replay could only be viewed immediately after playing the level (while the data is still in the game's memory)

Why? It can download level while replay is loaded same as it do when it's about to be played
