Hypothermia
I haven't decide much about this level other than it would be story based.

The rough story would be a blizzard has come in and has frozen the land including people, you would have to venture somewhere to stop the storm whilst fighting off the cold. There would be a variety of ways to do this if you were keen eye'd you could find the hidden parts of the level(s) in which you would face a puzzle in return for a part of clothing(I'll explain this later).

You have a certain amount of time you can spend in the cold outside so you must traverse obstacles get to the objective in a short amount of time else you will freeze, then get to the shelter after it in which you can recuperate. If you were to find clothing it would give you increased time before you froze.

The ability to find torches, you could place these at any time and would warm you up in the radius of the torch.

I've re though the whole thing really and now I'm considering that I would add a Day/Night sort of thing, in the day you would collect resources(wood,metal stone...) and in the night you would do something else un planned as of yet. After day has finished you would teleport back to your shelter and a menu would come up telling you what you could make with your resources. Making new objects would increase your skill level with that type of creation for example if I made a chair it would increase my carpentry skills in game and if I were to build a computer it would increase my electronic skills. As your skills increase you would be able to build bigger and better things that you would be able to place during the day. In the night whatever your doing would get you a resource you could only get at night thus making it more desirable. Considering scraping the idea of torches and adding placeable shacks or equivalent which you can build at a certain skill level. Another idea related to skill level would be the ability to find magazines during the day which would permanently increase your skill level in a specific subject much like the books you can find in fallout.

Ideas for items:

Lantern-Provides light at night.

Shack-Regenerates your warmth in the Day/Night.

Various Items of Clothing-These will keep you warm for longer depending on they're quality and what item of clothing they are for example a jacket would be better than a pair of socks. With better/more materials you can craft better clothing.

Gun Turret-Don't want to trail off and make this some sort of zombie game as there will be to many of them but there'd be a turret to fight whatever comes at night. This gives me an idea, during the night you will fight off the cold seeing as it would be colder at night, you will stay in your shelter but you will have to move the torch your holding to the area which is currently being frozen. This idea will definitely be expanded on.

Once again the story isn't fully decided yet but here is what I've got at the start of game you will have a cut-scene describing your life up to now(you character will be in his late teens) you father has died recently you were by his side when he died. His last words were "I've let my father down I promised to him I would make a mark on the world so our family name could go down in history for ever, I failed him. It's up to you to fulfil this promise now go to heaven and make God eradicate all suffering from these retched lands...dd..do..it...foo.for me" Through out the game you will have to gather the power to get into heaven to do this you will have to gather parts of a machine to teleport you to heaven this will happen over 3 levels. On the fourth level you will reach heaven only to find it has been deserted and there's nothing left other than powerless angels there, luckily for you God left a note of where to find him so you venture to this undisclosed location. The fifth level will be travelling to God and fulfilling the promise and the sixth will be another cut-scene level where it depicts the changes you have made.

Here is a bit about what you will be able to do:

It will be a classic medieval action RPG where you would be able roam at your will(free roam) there will be a main story quest and you can have up to 2 side quests at once. Side quests can be dropped at will but the main quest is un drop-able you will have a choice over a male or female character. There will be a fully functional skills tree and shops will be scattered around the world. Shops will require you to give them gold in exchange for their goods but you will also be able to craft the same goods and an extra gender exclusive piece of armor of if you have the right materials and skill.

Great idea. If this helps, think of it as under water. Same principles. Like at first you can only go so far without freezing, but when you get the new clothing, you can go further. Either into a cave deeper, skyscraper, subway. By the way, where is this taking place?

And you said a shelter. So I assume that when you freeze you spawn back to the shelter? Or this a find stuff as you travel thing?

Also, you can get some ideas from "The Day After Tomorrow".

Hypotermia is my fav'.
Just a little idea for the torches: you can make them be dropped OR throwed (to throw you need to hold the same key as to drop).
This could be useful is you're too scared of the night and you hear... things... x). So you throw a torch instead of going where the monster is, like a person would do (if he want to live).
I'm saying that because you don't know how many times I wanted to throw a torch in the dark x)!!!
