Media Molecule's latest project, LittleBigPlanet 2 is nearing its launch date of January 18th and the hype for Sackboy's latest appearance has never been so elevated. As a part of the press, I received my copy of Sony's upcoming exclusive this past Monday and one thing jumped out at me before I even began Sackboy's latest adventure.

Underneath the typical icon to start the game, PS3 owners will be presented with an option labeled "Extras". Once you select this icon, the user is introduced to nine advertisement widgets similar to what is shown under the "What's New" section of the XMB.

With online gaming being the phenomenon it is today, it is common to see and hear gamers debate over the entire PSN vs. Xbox Live topic. One thing that is often brought up is the fact that Microsoft charges $60 a year to present 360 owners with an online gaming service saturated with advertisements. Until PS3 firmware 3.00 went live, the PS3's XMB was known to refrain from the advertising campaigns, but even this did not quite force advertisements as aggressively as seen on the Xbox 360, until now.

With Sony's highly anticipated exclusive featuring this new advertisement method, it will be no surprise to see more game publishers hop onto this bandwagon to increase their profits. What do you guys think about this and do you feel this evens out the playing field as far as the aggressiveness of advertisements on the two competing high definition gaming consoles? Look out for my video review in Nick's Gaming View on Saturday here on TheGamerAccess.com!

I didn't like it when they put the PlayStation Store icon under nearly every tab. This is just as dumb. I never look at these kinds of things anyway.2011-01-13 19:53:00

Not to bring the whole Live VS. PSN debate here, but... what?
I've NEVER noticed anything resembling advertisements on my Xbox.

Zune? - Sure. It's a Microsoft thing.
Facebook and Twitter? - I guess? It's an integrated service, and not really an advertisement, though.

Beyond that... no ads for me!
But maybe that's because I'm gaming from the Netherlands? We DO have less features on our 'boxes (AND PS3's, mind!), so maybe the ads are a "feature" exclusive to the North American market as well?

So, "saturated" may be a bit of an overstatement, and showing a bias by the article writers.

the point is, at last Sony are really pushing one of their games and it's good to see. lets hope that KZ3 (next month) and Motorstorm3 (March) get a similar push2011-01-13 19:59:00

If there's space left on the disc it makes sense to stick demos and trailers for your own products on there, I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often.2011-01-13 20:04:00

where did you find that sweet background

It's the pre-start background when you hover over the option to start the game but don't actually press X yet... And I have to say it's looking pretty sweet.

This is a pretty good idea in a business point of view. Wouldn't be surprised if it is implemented into more games in the future.2011-01-14 00:46:00

Pretty much everything in the spotlight section of NXE is an advertisement.

I don't see what the deal is.
You could compare this to movie studios putting trailers for other movies in the bonus features of a dvd. Entirely optional.

^ THIS

also if it doesn't affect my ability to play LBP2 then I have no issues whatsoever

it's an OPTION that comes with the CD...you can CHOOSE to check it...or ignore it...unlike youtube/hulu showing stupid commercials before your video...which is **** annoying

so yeah LBP advert away...just don't get in the way of my gaming...that is all

Wait.
Do they mean ads for GAMES, GAME related stuff and Microsoft products tangentially related to gaming?

In that case... yeah. I guess the Xbox is riddled with ads.
For game-related stuff.

So wait, you put the LBP2 disc in and there will be extra demos you can install? Like the PS Move Starter Pack Disc? Meh, not to bad, just ignore, once you're in LBP2, you won't be getting out 2011-01-14 08:16:00
