It’s basically the category you would classify it as. For example: First Person Shooter, Racing Sim or Role Playing Game (RPG). If you’d like a better definition or more examples of the main video game genres, check out the Wikipedia Article! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_genres) Your task for this contest is to use the immensely diverse tool set in LittleBigPlanet 2 to come up with the most original genre you can think of. There are two ways you can go about this. The first is to literally come up with a brand new genre, one that we have never seen before in video games. Quite a task, but I bet some of you seasoned or brand new LBP creators have already had your eye on such a feat. Your second option is to remix genres. Like the Basketball RPG game mentioned in the interview! Either remix two genres together, or add such a twist to an already existing genre that it feels fresh and brand new. The choice is yours and the only limit lies within your brain. So send a few sackbots up there and have’em connect a bunch of microchips and sequencers to get all the horsepower that big ol’brain of yours can muster! To recap: Think up a new genre, create a level/game in LittleBigPlanet 2, then publish it for all to marvel and us to judge. The winner will be decided by both originality and fun-ablity of his creation! Go to the link to read the rules. Rules: 1) For your level to be eligible, you must have met the criteria mentioned in the description above. 2) You must have placed a LittleBigPlanetGalaxy sticker in your level/game. It may be at the very beginning or at the very end, or cleverly sneaked into your level/game wherever you please. This will not affect how we judge your level, so feel free to just place it simply or integrate it as you want to. However, make sure it is visible in a main area of your level. You can get a LittleBigPlanetGalaxy sticker from our community level. 3) Your level/game name must include the contest prefix. Simply add GXY3 at the beginning of your title. 4) You need to be a member of LittleBigPlanet Galaxy (http://www.littlebigplanetgalaxy.com/pod). Just sign up, make sure to include your PSN ID in your profile. We will be handing out the code for the crown via private message to the winner. 5) Once you’re signed up and your level/game is created, tell us its name and your PSN ID in this thread. To make it easy for us to find your level/game, be sure to leave us the LBP.me link (if you know how). 6) The contest is open to both North Americans and Europeans Prize: The winning entry will earn you the coveted Rare Prize Crown costume piece. Check here for all the details on this epic item. The top 3 levels/games will also be showcased in a Youtube video we will make and post on the site! Deadline: Friday March 18th @ 23:59 / 11:59PM EST (Eastern Time) We will be checking published and re-published dates as we judge the entries, so make sure you don’t re-publish your level/game for any reason after this deadline until the winners are announced.

I have an awesome idea for a new genre: Toe Platforming: Instead on having the controller in your hands, you play LittleBIGPlanet WITH YOUR FEET!!! This concept will make platforming a lot more challinging and ultimately satisfying! AND it can easily be applied to any existing Platforming level!!! Other good concepts are: Toe Top Down Racer, Toe FPS and Toe Cinematic Level. I'm not a member of LBGalaxy, so anyone who might be are welcome to borrow this idea and win the crown! I only ask to wear it every other week and during holidays...

What a weird contest. Think up a new genre Now, somebody may eventually invent a new genre within LBP, but games have been around for quite a while, and most genres have been discovered. The way it's written here you'd think creating a new genre is easy and would only take a couple of minutes. This makes about as much sense as holding a "Create a new source of sustainable energy" contest. It isn't going to happen as a result of somebody making a level for a crown contest. Well, it could do, but it's asking quite a lot.

I don't think it sounds hard to enter at all... winning well... that's another thing! It clearlys states that all sorts of genre mash-ups would be acceptable... so basically they' re really just insisting you be very original. Not so tough for most of you. As for the sticker, seems reasonable as they are trying to drive the visibility and enrollment of their own little big site... Seems every contest around here has a similar rule, be it sticker or prefix... pretty normal occurences to my mind. As for crowns being rare-- I think they are... mind you, (I don't have one) but it's not exactly my motivating factor either.

You're limiting yourself too much, think outside the box! How about a chemics-based fourth-person puzzle-survival? I can just see those horrific puzzles chewing off my sackboy's arms now... But yeah, you'd need a pretty loose definition of "new genre". Still, I might enter. I have some ideas that, while not exactly new, sneak across the existing borders of genre just often enough to maybe qualify. And competitions really help me stay focussed on a single level.

Indeed. Who's to say what's a new genre and what isn't? Is a first-person shooter still an first-person shooter if the protagonist is a banana? Or is it a fruit-person shooter? And who's to say a first-person shooter is any different to a shoot-em-up? They both have an aim-n'-fire style of gameplay. Such categories (like all categories) are arbitrary.
