Alex's official Creation questions thread.

Major thread edit: So ya, LBP2 is out, and I'm enjoying it. I'm also slowly (actually, rather quickly) getting dragged into create mode - I can already see how people spend so long in it. However, due to the fact I didn't touch it on LBP1, even the fundamentals elude me, and as such I'm gonna use this thread for all the questions I end up with and am unable to solve myself. Especially the pathetic ones that warrant no thread of their own. Anyone who can help me with any of my questions, please do, I'll be very grateful First off - Is the only way to suspend something in mid air to lay dark matter underneath, or suspend it with something from above? Or is there something else I'm missing? Second - how do you guys go about planning your levels - at the moment I'm just doing things as I think of them while I'm learning the tools, but in terms of actually planning out a level (when I finally decide to start one that might not suck - though it probably will) how do you all go about it? That's all for now, cheers, Alex. | 2011-01-12 12:16:00 Author: Unknown User |
As for the collectors edition, yeah we get a somewhat shrunken package (no pun intended) the costumes, avatar and case is it. Yeah the DLC is compatible, in fact if you have the Demo your LBP1 costumes and stickers are all imported automatically. And as for the tutorials the in-game ones are normally pretty concise, they are also on youtube among others from people in the beta so that is probably worth checking out | 2011-01-12 12:53:00 Author: RAWTalent Posts: 224 |
Well yes all LBP1 DLC will work on LBP2 even there levels, water is part of the game so you don't need to buy PofC for it. Buy DLC that you think you will need it. As for create mode, you should not get lost with LBP2 if you didn't create much on LBP1, in fact LBP2 is more applying since most of LBP1 basic tricks was transformed to official gadgets | 2011-01-12 13:38:00 Author: Shadowriver Posts: 3991 |
I thought I'd never seen you post outside General Chat before! Welcome! With regards to the Collector's Edition etc; If you're not fussed on anything in it, Play.com have Jak & Daxter costumes as a preorder bonus to the standard edition. Some good tutorials to check out are on The_Adipose's Youtube Channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/MrMorris1980#p/u). They're pretty informative and you can play them in-game. You could also check out our own Logic Pack too, but that'll be pretty redundant once LBP2 comes out. | 2011-01-12 13:47:00 Author: Rhys125 Posts: 841 |

As i say, I like to stay under my bridge in general chat, but I can leave now because Inan can be the troll under my bridge for a bit I'll have a look at that channel, cheers. | 2011-01-12 13:51:00 Author: Unknown User |
Bump - Thread title changed, it's now my official 'help me when I fail at creating' thread, as approved by Morgana. Couple of questions edited into OP, cheers | 2011-01-23 23:52:00 Author: Unknown User |
.... First off - Is the only way to suspend something in mid air to lay dark matter underneath, or suspend it with something from above? Or is there something else I'm missing? Second - how do you guys go about planning your levels - at the moment I'm just doing things as I think of them while I'm learning the tools, but in terms of actually planning out a level (when I finally decide to start one that might not suck - though it probably will) how do you all go about it? .... You can suspend objects in the air with an Anti-gravity gadget. Dark matter is nearly irrelevant in LBP2. The anti grav default is 100% when you go to tweak it, set dampening to 100% if you don't want it to move, 99% if you want it to be moved by other things like movers or pistons, and everything else if you want it to be played with by the player. Be advised it will float away though.. When it comes out to planning a level, personally.. I have a sketch book and actually sketch out the majority of my level first. Sketch out the ideas, the general concept, and how big things are going to work. By the time you actually start moving things from paper to the game, things gradually change a bit to something that might be even better than you first thought. You can also keep a notepad with your written other LBP notes, stuff you probably should write out, rather than sketch. (I have two currently ) As a tip to level building that I got, and changed my entire level making process, try to never use all 3 layers for players to move around in. Just use one or two tops, and use the other one or two layers for background and ambiance. Can also use it for much better platform obstacles. | 2011-01-24 00:04:00 Author: KoingWolf Posts: 386 |
For the first question you have 3 options, you can place a small piece of dark mater, a small piece of light matter or better a antigravity switch, just set the dampening to 100 and place it in an object. For the second one to create a good level you first have to get inspire, if you dont like the level then what makes you think people will like it aswell (sometimes lol). You have to get inspire and be happy with your level, there are multiple ways to get inspire for a level for example. Play a level, Google pictures, Look at a documentary, look at art, hear music, ect. Also you can go in the tutorial section to learn more because I dont want to leave an essay on how to make a level in this comment | 2011-01-24 00:17:00 Author: Arnald23 Posts: 1843 |
The level thing comes down to personal taste and may be influenced by the type of level you're building. When I do something platformy, I mostly just wing it, but I'm starting to plan a story based series so I might be doing some sketching. Personally, thoug, I prefer to do my "sketching" in game. I plan out the rough layout (where the platforms are and such) with dark matter and then either material change it or just replace it with whatever materials I decide to build the final level out of. During your sketch phase, you can run around through the level to see if it's too easy/hard/long/short from beginning to end. | 2011-01-24 02:29:00 Author: Sehven Posts: 2188 |
