Nuclearfish's 3D Stuff

Archive: 21 posts

Never really showed any of my stuff on here (mainly because I'm never pleased enough with it) but thought I might as well start a thread to post... stuff. For those who don't know (i.e. pretty much all of you) I'm in my final year at Uni studying Computer Games Modelling and Animation. I mostly make environments (hence my love of making LBP levels).

Anywho, for now I just thought I'd share a couple of renders of my latest project. We had to recreate a scene/location from a movie, so, naturally, I ignored the requirements and made the Hatch from LOST (which is fine because my tutor also happened to be a big LOST fan so was okay with it).

Everything you see here is pretty much finished, which is all I need to do for the project. But everything the camera isn't looking at isn't finished or doesn't exist yet. I'll get that done in my free time, if such a thing as free time will exist after next week.

To make it I used Maya and Mudbox for the modelling, Photoshop for the textures and Unreal Development Kit (UDK) to bring everything together into a playable 3D world of awesome. I tried to get is accurate as possible (studying hundreds of stills from the show, production blueprints, behind the scenes stuff... I know LOST fans are often accused of spending way too long studying these minor details that have no importance to anything, but this probably takes it to a whole new level).

Anyway, pics:

Maybe if I can be bothered I'll post some of my other stuff. Or more of this. Who knows.

Those are so incredibly accurate to the actual thing (I'm a LOST fan as well). The textures and models and everything are just perfect! Awesome job!2011-01-11 22:29:00

They both look great, but I really like the second one because of its lighting. It seems really mysterious.2011-01-11 22:32:00

I agree with zynax555 the lighting in the second one is just beautifully done. I love the Venetian blind shadow on the floor. Very impressive all round. 2011-01-11 22:39:00

Wow, that's quite incredible. Very interesting to see whole environments modelled instead of objects. Do you know how long it's taken you?

I know Photoshop isn't, obviously, but I don't suppose and of the other programs are free?

Just wondering, is this scene animated? Such as the lights and the tape reels?

O_O

Whoa...
I've seen many professional architecture renders, and none of them are as good as what you've made.
So you can walk around in it too... that would be amazing for architecture!

The Unreal Development Kit does have a free, limited version (http://www.udk.com/)

Thanks for the kind comments everyone!

I started it towards the end of September. Took a few weeks just blocking it all out to get everything accurate and to scale. I'm not sure exactly how long it's taken, because there's been some weeks I didn't do a thing and some I've done nothing else. At least 150-200 hours, probably more.

I know Photoshop isn't, obviously, but I don't suppose and of the other programs are free?

Tommy linked to UDK in the post above which is free. Maya is expensive (unless you know, erm, alternate methods of obtaining it which I *don't* recommend) and I've just been using the free trial for Mudbox (which will probably expire soon) but I think that's quite a lot too.

Just wondering, is this scene animated? Such as the lights and the tape reels?

Yes! Tape reels spin, lights flash and the computer screen even has the flashing >: | on it.

So you can walk around in it too... that would be amazing for architecture!

That is the awesomeness of UDK. Admittedly I don't have collision on everything yet so you can walk through a lot of stuff. I also forgot to mention these are real-time screenshots and not pre-rendered.

I'll get a few more pictures up later showing things a bit closer up. I took quite a few as I was making it so I might post those too so you can see the progression.

I've found a few old screenshots. Not got many but sort of shows the progression.

^ This is how it started out, a simple blockout so I could get everything to the right scale and knew where everything would go. The idea is you do this first so you can make sure everything is right BEFORE you start modelling stuff properly szo you don't need to go back and fix stuff, although I ended up ignoring most of this I'd made anyway.

^ This was the first thing I began properly making. It's a bit empty.

^ As is this. The floor was all wrong too.

^ This was taken the day before Christmas Eve. It was way off being finished and I still had temporary untextured stuff in there. I did a lot in these last few weeks...

And here's some more shots of the finished thing. They're not as high-res as the ones in the first post though.

^ This is what it looks like without any textures, just lighting.
