SA reviews "ROBO RAMPAGE X"

Wow. What a level that was.

Robo Rampage X was the invention of a crazy dude named Dimo1138, of whom I swear I've played challenge levels by before but for the life of me can't remember which. I remember a very blue level full of precision jumping everywhere. Well in contrast today I'm taking a look at ROBO RAMPAGE X, which is very red.

Things started off a bit more differently than usual. The level, from top to bottom, is absolutely littered with tons of red grid MGS material, which is cool but I tend to dislike it when the entire level is covered in the stuff. However, I wasn't upset. Right away, I was introduced to blocks and figures I wasn't accustomed to, custom made blocks used to help create scenery. It's like I spent an entire week eating pepperoni pizza and getting a hawaiian pizza at the end of that week. The food is the same, but the flavor is new. That's actually a good way to describe a lot of aspects about this level, but more on that later.

So, the idea behind this level is you are a special soldier sent to obliterate the base of the wild Dr. Dimo before he wreaks havoc or something. Definitely seen this kind of setup before but I can work with it, no problem. You will often be given a gun for the purpose of destroying all the robots in your way before taking down the factory itself. Along the way, the depraved ramblings of Dr. Psycho will keep you company through the intercoms. As far as the actual monster design goes, I found that generally most of the monsters were well created and accomplished all that they needed to do, however I might occasionally question the placement of a few of them, especially at the beginning.

The challenge of the level is certainly strong. This is without a doubt one of the hardest levels I've played, at least out of the last 15 levels I've tried and reviewed. Most of the jumps are excellently spaced, the enemies were well constructed and reasonably hard, I actually found the Mid-Boss to be relatively challenging, and the last boss was excellent fun. Throughout the entire level there's tons of stuff constantly trying so hard to end you. Not only that, but there are a few of segments where your jumping ability needs to be exact.

Honestly, there's really not a lot I can say about the level. It's good. It's really good. I really had almost no issues with the level outside of the last boss feeling a bit lengthy, and when the worst thing I have to say about the level is the boss is hard in a challenge level I'm pretty sure everything's fine.

Final Score: 9.5 / 10
Not much to say, but a lot to experience. The level is fun, challenging as hell, and surprisingly well designed. Making an entire level out of one primary material is usually bland, but this one was handled exceptionally.

On a side note, I get to wait at the DMV for an hour today. Hot dog!

This is one of my all time old school favorites. I always want to bring people in to play the series, but it's too brutal to just run through without being a totally focused one-man army.

Definitely check out X-2 as well, and the epic X-3 that Dimo released a few months back. It was one of the best simultaneous release levels ever. A huge, multi-level challenge that's just as polished as 1 & 2, and will chew you up & spit you out. It was severely overlooked.

I agree.... fantastic creator. Many who don't take the time won't appreciate the care that went into each area. Which reminds me.... I never did beat his new one.... need to go back and work through it - I loved what I saw but I was too busy to beat it.2011-01-12 23:47:00
