Trick or Terror!

Archive: 13 posts

Hi everyone! This is only my second day on the site and already I'm getting great feedback for my level "Little Big Christmas".
You can see that F4F thread at https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=42985-Little-Big-Christmas

Well, now I'm also seeking feedback on my Halloween level, "Trick or Terror!"

This was taken by someone named PSYNTNS. I'm posting it here because it's the only legit screenshot that wasn't cheaply taken of the TV screen by my work camera.

It starts off as a trick-or-treat simulator (which includes paintballing a stingy house with the help of a flamboyant pirate) and then turns into a classic horror scenario as the creepy house at the end of the block turns out to be actually haunted!!!!

Battle a basement monster mini-boss, and then go toe-to-toe with the possessed house itself. Your bid for escape from the final room is multi-stage and involves flying books, a levitating pharoah mask, a shrieking poltergeist and some puzzle-solving. Try to find another level out there with a final boss that's you vs. a living room!!! Also, there's tons of community items to collect!

This took a long time to make and I put a lot of care into creating an "autumn" feeling for the trick-or-treat segment, complete with falling leaves and burnt orange sunset. Please check it out and give your feedback. Also, please let me know which of your levels you'd like me to play and give my feedback as well.

Thanks for playing!!!

+ Large leaves.
+ Poltergeist! Nice work including the bubbles.
- Pumpkin switch didn't work for me. (I had the sticker)

Custom stickers should come under "sticker switches" if they are used in the level.
I'm guessing you left the switch blank or clicked on the wrong sticker when editing it?
Will replay after the fix/explanation (maybe I'm missing something).

i liked it!
that ghost scared me more than playing through all of dead space...
i also didn't get a pumpkin sticker. i think i know what happened. i got a pumpkin "object" that looks to be the exact size and shape of the pumpkin sticker pad thing. perhpas you meant that to be the sticker?

i have the level queued for the fix! i'll give a better review then

Thanks for the reviews, guys. I think I've just fixed the sticker problem. I think I had some wrong stickers selected. The switch trigger sticker is located in the first house, the one with the Spider-Man painting. I tried to make it to where it was impossible to get out of the house without collecting it. Now that I think I've fixed this problem, is there any way I can update it without having to republish and lose all my plays?

Midnight_heist, I played Bad Design 101 last night and will post a review very soon. Please give me today to catch up on my queue and return all the other feedback I owe. Thanks again, guys!

Hi BronchoNate, to republish your level without losing plays, edit it on your moon and then select publish. When you go to place it on the community moon put it directly over the published version until "publish" changes to "overwrite" this will prevent a loss of any hearts/plays.

Here are my thoughts on your level.

Nice idea with the falling leaves. Some really nice detail and gameplay.

1st enemy could do with a wider radius on speech trigger as I killed him just as he started talking. A cut scene to accompany the dialogue would also look good here. I noticed none of your magic mouths use these in the two levels I've played, shame as I think they would both benefit from them. If you're not sure how to add them, the option is in the magic mouth settings, just below the speech bubble.

Boss with axes looked good, i nearly had to restart here as it was difficult to tell which layer the wheels with gas were on, so maybe infinite lives spawn would be better as it would have been quite far to travel back to.

Liked the spinning spiked wheels with the rising water idea.

Pumpkin sticker switch didn't work and I didn't understand why there was a need for dialogue telling player to look in their pictures or community photos for the sticker?. If they have to look for it, and its not showing automatically under trigger switches then the switch isn't programmed correctly and the sticker wont work. Hence, although it was under my community stickers and I used it, I was unable to activate a response and had to quit the level.

Please let me know when you have fixed and I will play again

Nice level

+Good detail with the fallen leaves and the houses.
+Great enemies, especially the ghosts made from gas.
+Nice spooky atmosphere which I felt was even more so in the parts of the level without music
+Good bubble placement

-Some of the enemies were too easy to kill
-I got killed 3 times jumping down the stairs as I kept landing on something that had been set on fire
-Poltergeists near the end got a bit annoying as they kept killing me when I was trying to press the button to get out

I guess you fixed the pumpkin sticker switch as it worked fine for me.

-found a bug. you can get stuck if you jump before the door to the house you have to shoot, but after the tree. the leaves block you from jumping down a layer but you automatically get sucked behind them if you jump.

loved the level. great spooky atmosphere. i was disappointed that it ended right after the area i got stuck on last time though i kinda wanted too see more of the spooky house

for F4F please play "ginormo burger"

Harbingernaut, I'll be happy to play ginormo burger! And I like anything with zombies in it, so I'll probably play zombie survival as well. I'll try to get to that tonight and post some feedback ASAP.

I'm glad you liked Trick or Terror. Thanks for reminding me about the leaf-trap bug. I remember my friends found that when they tested it for me before I published it, but I forgot all about it. I was disappointed that it ended so soon, myself! But that thermometer has a way of stifling creativity. I've got some ideas that were never used, so I'll probably take a crack at a sequel one of these days. I'm glad you found the ghost to be scary. That's definitely what I was going for!

Thanks again for playing, and I'm really looking forward to playing your levels. If you're up to it (and haven't already) please check out Little Big Christmas. It's also a F4F. There's a boss battle at the end against Jack Frost!

Destinly_Waits, I fixed the pumpkin sticker bug and I took your other suggestions as well. I never knew about that magic mouth camera trick! This will really change how I do things. Thank you! I've already republished Little Big Christmas with this new feature. Also, I played Little Big Noise today and loved it! I'll post F4F details as soon as I can find the thread.2011-01-09 06:07:00

+ Large leaves.
- The first door dissolved before I got the switch sticker bubble.
Add a mag key on the bubble, a key switch (with the radius covering the key/bubble) and set it to inverted.
This means when the player gets the bubble, the key disappears, therefore dissolving the door.
- Water rise should activate as soon as the checkpoint does.
+ Ghost - simple yet brilliant.
+ Poltergeist! Nice work including the bubbles.

Aww, the end. I was one door and three jumps away from finishing last time, ha.
I enjoyed all the bonus houses and little touches, like that skull on the spike wheel.

One suggestion is if you have thermo, add some more gameplay into the poltergeist section.
It is the perfect excuse for having randomly floating platforms in a game!

Oh, and if you use sticker switches in the future, make sure all other prize bubbles are avoidable.
And always put that "community items on" warning somewhere.
It's rather annoying getting right to the end but being unable to finish because of a locked door at the end.
It reminds me of the time I was playing a professor layton game got all the way to the end but couldn't finish the last piece of the last puzzle just because there was no mic!

Solid level though. How's full is the thermo?

Thanks for the feedback, midnight_heist! Thermo is VERY full. I tried to add a sound object and the thing overheated on me, LOL! But I think I can get that magnetic key switch on the prize bubble if I can remove some corners from some objects. That's a really good idea, by the way. I never thought about putting a magnetic key on a bubble. I really want to do a sequel to this someday, with all the cool stuff that's sure to come with LBP 2. I'll definitely have some extended poltergeist action in that one, if I do!

I did put in the description a warning about turning on community items, but I guess when I republished one of those times, I wrote over it with the old description. That will be something for me to fix when I get home.

I played your level Bad Design 101, but couldn't find a F4F thread for it, so I'll post my feedback here:

+ More detailed and informative than other levels of its type that I have played.
+ The level is fun in its own right, which is a bonus. In most of these, there's no real fun factor. They're just informative.
- A small negative, but I did notice some punctuation errors. We all get these in our levels, but since yours is so text-focused, maybe one more proofread would be a good idea.
+ The crystals? Geodes? Diamonds? at the end were a good prop. I'd like to see that used in another level.
+ Creative platforming
+ Crushing boulder made me laugh.

Nice work!

Your level started in quite a nice town and i really liked the leaves falling down, the thing i think you shoud change is the size of the leaves as i thought they were a bit screen hogging. i loved the bit where the people tried to mug you for sweets lol there costumes were really well made a seemed like real people, saddly i couldnt say the same for the pirate guy who was egging the house, he just looked really weird and out of place compared to the other two. I did like the egging of the house as i felt like little sack rebel

The haunted house was very different to the start of the level nut it looked really nice and had great lighting, i didnt really like the bit with the spinning things with spikes and you had to swim past them as the water rised, it was just a little boring for me and was annoyying when you get killed and go back and do it again.
the ghost that chases you was really cool and very supernatual looking. After that there wasnt really anything else to the level and was just put a sticker on the frame above the fire and push the button to open the door to the exit, it would have been better to have abit more to it.

i rated it 3 stars but if i could i would have gave 3 1/2 stars you did a good job with this level and you have the ability to make more better level with practice, i wait to see what you do in the new game, see ya there

I like the car that roared forward to kill you - the falling leaved seem a bit oversized, the pumpkins look good as well.
The house after the bullies, if you jump behind the leaves on ground it is impossible to get out - had to explode.

The cliche stairs, spike ceiling and all the floating possessed stuff was cool.
