Grabbable Rope

Archive: 10 posts

I could really use a rope element that's grabbable. Currently, you always have to attach some object to a rope for you to swing with it, but I'd like to have a rope that you can grab from any point - from either end or from the middle, without adding any objects to it.2008-11-07 07:35:00

could you make like a chain of grabbable material connected with something so that it would swing and could be latched onto. That's an idea I've had anyway2008-11-07 07:37:00

That's how I'm going to get around this problem currently, but an actual grabbable rope would be much better and more versatile.2008-11-07 07:41:00

yes i find this very annoying seeing as you can't make the grabbable object on the end small enough2008-11-07 11:21:00

i think making something grabbable should be applicable to anything
Ex: you have wood(usually ungrabbable) so you go to you tool bag and make it grabbable a bit like how we lethelise objects

Just attach a srting to a long piece of sponge, or connect bolts to each little piece of sponge for a better result2008-11-07 22:04:00

It's not grabable, but for my level, "Sackboy's Mayan Misadventures", I didn't want to have the usual sponge-on-a-string thing, so I made "vines" out of segments of thin pieces of wood connected together by string. At the end is a sponge for grabbing, but I don't see a reason why the segments couldn't be sponge as well (would that work or would they be to thin? You might have to make 1-level thick).

Doing it this way also allowed me to decorate the whole thing (not just the sponge) with leaves and flowers for a nice look, and I even attached it to a wobble bolt (on cardboard bolted to dark matter) to give it a nice swingy effect.

Play my level to see - and you can even win it right near the beginning of the level...

I'll try to check your level out when I've got the time.

But there would indeed be a problem with the thickness of the sponge. The sponge has to be pretty big in order to be grabbable at all. Also, it would be nice if the player were able to jump past the rope if the player didn't want to grab it. With sponge or other material, you're going to hit the rope (at least after you've grabbed it once).

Would differences in depth possibly overcome this barrier?

I'm imagining say, Sackboy on level 1 closest to the screen, the rope on level 2 the middle, and another edge on level 1... wouldn't he just jump past the thing if you are not grabbing? Maybe it might work the other way around, or at level 1 and 3... you should be getting the idea by now.

I haven't really developed any swinging ideas of this types in levels I am developing, so it would be slow for me to test as I need to work all the stuff out.

Even so though, it would have to be a pretty small jump. :o
