Little Big Christmas

Archive: 17 posts

Hello! I'm new here. I have four levels on the servers, and I'm looking for feedback on all of them, especially "Little Big Christmas."

I know Christmas is over, but we can all revisit it, right?

You start off meeting Santa, who is stuck in a chimney.

From there, you explore a typical Midwestern home at Christmas time, complete with kids dreaming of sugar plums.

The convoluted plot requires you to enter their Christmas dreams, which have been turned into nightmares by Jack Frost, who is the final boss.

Also, there's a depressed rocking horse, named Uncle Charlie, who dispenses wordly wisdom.

Any feedback you all can give would be MUCH appreciated. I look forward to playing your levels and giving feeback as well!!

Thanks!

Hey! Just played this level and here's my feedback...

First of all, going down the chimney you can see the edge of the level on the right side. I would suggest adding a background so you don't see just some random wall. After you got out of that chimney, there isn't a checkpoint near by, so if you die you have to go down that chimney allll over again! So yeah I would suggest adding a checkpoint. XD I liked the scenery, most times it was very detailed, but there were some parts that felt empty... Umm I lol'd at the disappointing ride XD

Anyways, 4 stars and one of those hearts.

Thanks for the feedback, morris6267. It's really appreciated! I queued up your level and I'll try to play it tonight and get you some feedback.

The chimney was always problematic for me, as I think it wasn't planned out super-well from the start. There is actually a checkpoint at the bottom of the chimney, in that mouse hole to the left of the clock. Players are supposed to exit there, but I've found that a lot of people fall out at another point, but that it doesn't break the level. The problem is, if they exit another way, they miss the checkpoint unless they know where to look. Is there any way that I can fix this without having to republish the level and lose all my plays, hearts and comments???

Also, could you please tell me which parts felt a little empty? I think I can probably guess which ones, but I'd appreciate some specifics on this. As you can imagine, my thermometer was getting quite full toward the end LOL. Thanks!

Also, here's a pic of the final boss battle that I didn't upload yesterday:

I was a bit "over" Christmas, but that picture of the boss peaked my interest. Plus I do enjoy snowy levels.
+ Santa feet!
- Got stuck at bottom of chimney.
- Went past, but did not activate the checkpoint in the crack.
+ Green present!
-+ The rocking horse speaks the truth.
+ Ice wall coming down.
- "Well it looks like his head..." magic mouth didn't stay around long enough.
- Thin piece of ice in the foreground causes me to switch layers back into the gas.
- No warnings about community items! =(

Nice level, just touch up the things I mentioned.
Queued again for another play later (with items on).

Thanks for the excellent feedback, midnight_heist!

What did you mean when you said I should warn about community items?
Is there a way to fix these things without having to republish the level and lose all my plays/hearts?

Also, I queued your level "Bad Design 101". Are there any other levels you'd like me to play and give feedback on?

No problem.
Well most serious creators/players have "Collect community items" turned off in the (profile?) settings menu of LBP.
This means you don't collect objects/custom stickers from player's levels (as it fills the poppit up with mostly junk).
Most creators that that custom sticker switches have a little warning in the description (http://lbp.me/v/v5jedf) of the level, or at the start.

As for republishing...you just need to make adjustments to the level on your moon, and republish in the same place.
This will still retain all plays/hearts and update the level with the fixes.

Good pick. Not many plays on that one.
No need to review any of my levels, but I do appreciate the play!
Keep up the good work.

Hey Broncho, here is my review on this level.

This was a really pretty Christmas level with stacks of detail, I can tell a lot of work went into this. Perfect environment and I loved the start, the sleigh looked great and so did Santa's sack ....hmm saying that doesn't quite seem right but I guess there's no other way to put it lol.

The presents looked great, nice touch that you could open some to get points/prizes. Loved the idea with the sleeping children and your creative design of this section. Liked the effect of the shattering building further on in this level too.

Here are a few changes I thought the level could use.

Its always nice to have a cutscene when a button is pressed and the outcome is out of view, I felt this was missing when jumping on the button above the children and I had no idea what its response was. Linking this button to a magic mouth in view of the lowering bridge would be a nice addition.

Christmas presents with grab switches above would look better without visible pistons. When the floor dissolves here, I could see visible dark matter and logic to the left on the way down.

At the end of the level the horse started talking at the same time as he disappeared - increased trigger radius would be good.

I thought the boss was too easy, really easy for me both times I've played it. I just jumped on one button then over to the next and placed the sticker without anything getting in my way. He looked great so its a shame it isn't a little more challenging.

All in all I really enjoyed playing it. It was fun, aesthetically pleasing with some great ideas. From the two levels I've played of yours, I get a sense that if you continue making levels and building on your skills you are going to become a very popular creator and blow us all away

Okay i played the levl and it was good,
Pros
The presents looked nice,
The Boss and the characters were designed well
Cons,
at the end i wasnt able to read what the horse was saying cause i was running low on air and before he can talk again he disappeared
i didnt know where to go at the end so i was lost for a couple of minutes,
the boss fight was too easy

overall the levels is :star::star::star::star:
Please play my F4F level (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=43080-Eldin-Province-High-School-Saga-Part-1-A-New-Start)

i'm going to give a step by step review of this level (cuz it's the most convenient/in depth way for me )

+good atmosphere. very wintery nighttime
-santa farts!!!
+the down the chimney part was cool. but at the end i i thought i was stuck because i didn't see the hole in the wall.
+christmasy platforming! presents and stockings look good
-you could corner edit the material better for the stockings. it sticks out at a sharp angle in a few spots.
+the toys are cool. the background animation is a nice touch to the level.
-wasn't sure i was supposed to climb the tree. i jumped off the branch between the tree and the ramp cuz i thought i was supposed to go that way
+termite eaten tree. it would have been cute to see a termite scurry by in the background
-for some reason it was extremely difficult to jump to the second kid's bed. it was probably just me, though
+dream world concept is pretty cool and nicely done
+was NOT expecting that entire room to dissolve.
-if you swim straight down you can see that the giant creepy fish is just a head!
+the ice wall breaking look sweeeeeeeet!
-i can't figure out how to kill this jack frost guy. i can't find any sticker triggers to use that sticker for. standing on his hands makes a success noise but doesnt seem to do anything else. and the whole time i keep dying from deadly gas when i'm not near any.
+FINALLY was able to get to his second hand without randomly dying. now i see how to kill him.
+i like how everything disolves at the end. it contributes to the dream world feel.

i gave it 4stars because i love levels that have great visuals like this, because that's what mine lack,
but there were few hints and directions and the jack frost boss was a little frustrating.

Thanks harbingernaut! I'll address the things you mentioned. The boss battle has been pretty troublesome for me, as it's always either too easy or too hard. The random gas deaths you were suffering were probably from a new attack I added to make it more difficult. Watch out for that blue spotlight, as it's a marker for a swinging gas object.

I guess I need to add some score bubbles going up the first tree branch to make it clear that's where you're supposed to go. I also need to put some more gas by the fish to make sure no one can get down there.

Also, thanks for playing and giving me five stars for Trick or Terror!

I played ginormo burger and zombie survival. Both were interesting levels and it seems that there's some impressive game logic behind both of them. I'm really curious to know how you did some of that stuff. I'll post my reviews in their respective boards after I get a sandwich. I also played your zombie town level and was really impressed with some of your ideas there.

hello there, here is some feedback for your level

pros
+Love the story
+The whole santa thing was hiliarious
+the transition from the roof, around santa, down chimney and int he house was flawless
+the transition of the music track in the chimney was a nice touch

cons
-had to have profile to accept prizes was risk to me due to the volume of item i possess.
(the need to accept all those prizes for one sticker for the boss)
-the boss and the lethal areas were a bit confussing
-the level had a strong beginning but tapered off near the end

In summary this was a fun level, with some good comedy. I enjoyed the play and thank you for taking the time in designing it.

-as for F4F, check out my "Creature Creation Tutorial" when you have some spare time, thanks.

Thanks for the feedback, sascha_winter. I just queued up Creature Creation Tutorial and I'll try to take a look at it tonight.

I'm glad you liked my level. I had a lot of fun building it. As you can probably guess, that old thermometer started complaining toward the end, so not everything turned out exactly as I would have liked for it to. I'm trying to find a good difficulty level for the boss. At first the only attacks were the rolling snowball in the second plane, and getting crushed between his fists if you fell down there. When it was like that, people were saying he was too easy (and I agree). Now, I've added the deadly swinging spotlight in the first plane, and people have been saying it's too hard (which I also agree with). Do you have any suggestions on how I could find a balance? Or is there maybe a better attack than the swinging spotlight of doom? Thanks!

I'll write as i go

longer pause before ejected from sack me nice - its got a huge black bubble telling me I do not have some DLC you used in prizes so had to restart and close it real fast to see where I was thrown from.

chimney checkpoint if you just lum forward layers to get down you just fall before wall slides in and don't have to go through the mouse hole.

You can stop people jumping down with an invisible gas wall you can find in various community levels it is one they glitched thing - or put a player detect switch with a good sized radius and attached to check point so it triggers it on your behalf.

The spiders are cute but they seem to have quite the infestation.

If i fall down the left side of candle then jump and miss in an attempt to get back up i can fall out of the level all the way down to the bottom.

I like swinging of giant lights - more need for that - its between they are in a string not just random ones handing on individual strings.

The big fish are awesome - but there is a gap bottom left corner of red gas and i can swim out of the level.

The trees after water section look awesome - i like the dance like movements bouncing on the tops and rudolph looks very neat as well.

The last sticker on top tower should be one you need - unless i am a bit thick - i have very limited space in my community stickers so with so much stuff in level and me having all sorts hearted i an only take a few things at a time.

Now issues with boss fight.
Where you respawn it is not level with glass, so a bit of an overhop and you are in the body gas, or you change forard layer to middle cant go further because of crystals which do look awesome and then stuck and killed by snow balls. The timing of the blue light gas and the arms is almost the same - leave very little time for getting through and was annoying and not fun, even if the light went slower or if i could drop down between arms and be able to jump out to avoid gas in middle that would be better. Perhaps not give out the sticker needed, but have larger snowflakes with it on falling, and have a hint to catch /sticker grab from one of those and cool his head or something. Maybe do this a few times and have snow get faster so harder to catch.

Did not finish due to not having the sticker and not going back thru whole level to try figure which one it was since its 5:25 am and I have to work today.

Let me know when you adjust the boss and I will have another go.

Ok as promised I had a go of this level

- Visuals were great. It looked and felt really christmasy and the Santa Clause in the chimney was spot on
- The platforming was great, especially when it came to the presents and christmas tree
- I liked the spiders...I just like spiders.

Unfortunately I got totally stuck on Jack Frost so I had to give up. Still it was worth 4 stars

Just had a replay with items on.
It's quite a fun level.
Layer switching in the boss is the biggest problem, but that can be easily fixed.
Christmas tree platforming and all the presents and stuff looked great.
Another suggestion to encourage replays is to tighten up the bubble combos.
