Would you pay to work...?

Archive: 19 posts

I definitely wouldn't. I'd save the money on books, DLC, downloadable games or LBP2.

But unfortunately (and strangely), I have to go to my school's Trip to China Banquet (Yes I'm going to China... and meet some dragons.) to work there on backstage of the entertainment. So is everyone else (though others are serving as waiters and waitresses and stuff). The problem?

...we have to pay admission like everyone else.

"Oh Fang, it's not that ba-"

The admission is $115 (US money).
...umm yes and I HAVE to go unless I get sick. I'm hoping for the very least to EAT what everyone else is eating but yeah...

I for one seriously don't want to pay 115 bucks to work my tail feathers off... that can buy me LBP2 CE and any DLC that comes out for the next month or three!
But ehh.... what would you do if you were in a situation like this? I appreciate helping the school but that price is RIDICULOUS... my family and I are on a budget!

Sucks about the money, but man! You get to go to china! Bring me back a fortune cookie?

Oh, and about the food? Open your fortune cookie...

Don't worry friend. You wouldn't get paid anything working in China anyway.2011-01-06 04:02:00

Interesting. You don't look so well. I think you're coming down with something very mild that all it does is sap your strength after you get to China. 2011-01-06 04:39:00

It is sort of outrageous that they are charging you to work for them, but on the other hand you're going to China! How cool is that?! I would love to go to China if I got the opportunity. I guess it's a win lose situation... unless you really don't want to go, then it's just a lose lose, which just plain sucks. Anyway I hope you have fun if you do decide to go.2011-01-06 05:16:00

Pretty sure a school can't force you to pay money, other than tuition fees.2011-01-06 07:28:00

I'm going to China in April for two weeks. Going to Beijing first, seeing Tianenmen Square, the Forbidden City, The Great Wall. Then going down to see the terracotta army. It's costing me a fair bit, but I'm really looking forward to it.

It's a once in a lifetime oppertunity you've got there, that you will remember for the rest of your life. Once your school days are over you will never be in such a diverse social mix of people.
What "work" exactly is it that you'll be doing to make your tail feathers drop off?

On one hand 100 odd bucks to visit a storied foreign land seems awful opportunity-ish. On the other hand, what is the work? How much free time to enjoy it would you have? Do you want to? Do you really have a choice? It seems you would have a choice though, this isn't China.2011-01-06 14:18:00

Just curious... Do you also have to pay a ton of money for the trip? Possibly it is free or at a greatly reduced rate due to this banquet?

I dunno.. I sure would like a trip to China. That would be pretty cool. Heck.. a trip anywhere would be cool. If it was free or at a horribly reduced rate, working a bit one night and paying $115 might not be so bad.

^ This.

What exactly is the entire deal? i.e. how much total are you paying for the trip to china, how long will you have to work for, how long is the trip lasting for and what does the rest of the trip entail?

If the teacher does say something like "You will be able to experience China with a whole new perspective" I would call him/her a racist 2011-01-06 17:09:00

To everyone else, yeah, I am looking forward to China. Just not working at a banquet.

We also have to pay for some of the trip, ehh... I think around eh 1000-1500 dollars?
We build some of the money over time. Doesnt cover much though (only like 5-10% or so). My only probem is paying and working while we watch everyone eat for.... 4-10 PM or midnight or something at the same price as us.
But other than that, China will be pretty nice for a two week trip. Get to meet new folk, eat scorpions... practice second language....
... and buy stuff for kids and write a report on it counting for ALOT of my grade, so I really don't have a choice unless I go to China at a seperate time at full price.

Oh sure... of course they can't...

But unfortunately this is MANDATORY and if I am well and don't show up... I most likely will get destroyed or something.
I don't really wanna think about it. I've seen people go into the office and change when they come out.

Ahh.. yeah, I can understand that. Sounds like the dinner is just their way of funding the thing. Well.. maybe look at it like this. You may have to work and pay, but they don't get to go to China. lol

Sounds like a cool trip. Keep us posted and have fun!

Guests: Get us our table. We want our food.
Me: Hahaha we get to go to China and you don't HA!
Guests: What...?
Me: Oh ummm... *whistles*
Yeah probably won't happen like that but maybe in my sleep.
