A Last Push to Save the Cool Pages!

Archive: 50 posts

As I'd been away from lbp1 for so long, having only really been on the beta... I was shocked to see the cool pages had deteriorated even more! Well I thought about how I could highlight how awful the quality of levels were on the cool pages and how maybe (just maybe) I could slightly improve them.

Method 1: Tell it like it is...

1) 'Cool Pages are rubbish'
http://i3.lbp.me/img/ft/d631f8735fe1e069835e128662812be65445f7d2.jpg

2) 'Im sick of bomb survivals'
http://i0.lbp.me/img/ft/3d0afee8c15de6a7443f1b180ccb903c3f396bd8.jpg

3) 'Where are decent levels?'
http://ia.lbp.me/img/ft/d9acbe589115a712091782bcf82e3c5f2e1a1e71.jpg

4) 'Let's not ruin LBP2'
http://i5.lbp.me/img/ft/a65da52bbd5e0d6bb37a47d941be123616ec3675.jpg

Results: Lots of PMs from people pleased that I was trying to do something about the issue and also alot of clan invites

Method 2: Highlight the good levels...

I used the same technique to highlight two really good levels on page 1. I hoped it worked to give them a few more plays.

Method 3: Get more decent levels on the cool pages...

I used my levels to bump others onto the cool pages.

Results: I managed to get 5 other levels up to page one using this process

So how can you be a part of this...

Well if you would like a crack at the cool pages then you can post in this thread and hopefully someone using the method will get in contact with you. Unfortunately all my levels are off the cool pages at the moment and therefore adding a key would be of very little use.

Potentially the process could continue with people helping others boost their levels and the dream of amazing cool pages might actually be a reality...

Thanks.

Great way to get your point across
I like how you can just get a level instantly popular as well. What actually were the levels?

Edit: Argh, you missed out a few apostrophes >_<

Lol, what an awesome way to promote less spammy levels!

I'm assuming you're taking them down once they get bumped off of the higher pages, so I'm curious as to what sort of content is in them?

They're just a few of my better levels... 'Cirque de la Nuit', 'Firestarter', 'A Shadow of a Forgotten Past' and ' Atomic Assistance' to be precise.2011-01-05 22:46:00

This better not be a reason to justify republishing for hearts.
I don't like the practice of republishing old levels as new for plays/hearts and you have done it before.

This is neat though

@ Rauland: Nah i'll be deleting the level after they come off the front page. It's not as if any of them will get anywhere near the number of plays the original copies have.
And republishing before, only did that with Cirque de la Nuit since I felt it deserved a wider audience.

I get the feeling that there's something morally wrong about doing this.
Still, somehow, I don't think I could care less about it.

I'm impressed, yes I am. Now, if you could just give answers instead of questions, that'd be cool. Dor example, you could redirect people to your own hearted list for good levels. I get the feeling that many will read "Where are decent levels?" and wonder where they actually are. Sad!

Haha yeah i was thinking about directing people to highest rated or something but i would need more levels to get the message across and then i think id be on the verge of being hypocritical with my actions.

Welll it's morally wrong to the extent that i've probably removed another 4 spam levels from the front page, so that's of minimal significance.

Haha and yeah ur probably right about the decent levels comment!

I'm no kill-joy... ( I'm really not) :hrmf: this is just a little hard for me to swallow as fun... It's a complete mockery! I know, I get it, I'm in on the joke... but as someone who 6 days ago released 2 uniquely stylized good levels... that between them both barely have 100 plays... well, I'm feeling like the jokes on me...

Just a little 'grub' to gnaw-on from someone who is still waiting for their 'watershed' moment.

Funny u should say that actually.. because it was due to the failure of my 'Chihiro's Garden' and 'A Shadow of a Forgotten Past' to get many plays or anywhere near the front page that caused me to do it. Making a mockery of the cool pages is exactly what im doing.

I think I follow you-- It's easy to write-off my lack of success because I really haven't had any... so to expect it now so close to LBP2, while people are involved in beta and demo's doesn't make sense. What I don't understand then is, as an established creator-- one who has tasted success in this arena... Why are your old levels succeeding where your newer ones failed... What am I missing?2011-01-06 16:39:00

So no-one has yet thought of trojan horsing a number of good levels onto the front page of the cool levels wrapped up in the success of some free stuff levels?

I appreciate that making a post-ironic statement and "raising awareness" are highly fashionable these days, but rather than asking where the good levels are, why not actually put some good levels in front of people, if you have the vehicle to do so?

The only reason these levels are on the front page is due to 'Cirque de la Nuit'...

Firstly I think a lot of people are drawn to the logo. I don't know why, but pretty much as soon as I put Cirque up I get lots of people playing it. On top of that, it isn't a bad level so people tend to rate it reasonably well. Keys to the other 3 levels are in cirque to feed them people lol.

Secondly because im going to take these levels down eventually Im not worried about scoring and therefore can publish Cirque over the weakest level to boost that one up.

If u want some advice the best thing i can say is to get an attractive logo. Im pretty sure thats wat most people are drawn to.

@rtm: I would like to think the levels I've published are reasonably good

The 'logo badge patch' comment is too funny-- because, Lightmare ( i assumed he was kidding...) intimated the same exact thing... mystery solved! Of course I'm not buying it! I could put out a Pixar-perfect Toy Story Adventure w/ accompanying logo... and badge and level would still not get near page 5. And your Cirque level was something special... yet I am surprised How greatly it was received... It didn't seem anything at all like a lbp gad ? Even more proof I suppose that it is indeed special.

edit: I don't know what to say... I am flattered and flattened. Even if just an hour I'd take you up. As long as your sure it can't reflect poorly on you in any way. Just sent a PSN friend message but it would seem you are indeed very popular.

This is actually not that bad an idea, having a hub level that directs to the hub of particular creators.
(Seems ppl dont care that much about people's hearted list)

LOL I was half serious but it is true that the level badge attracts people. Seems like bright colors attract them like fireflies. Ive played your level and its very good. I wouldnt mind putting a key in my level. I can have Sabre_ do the same.

@ ladylyn1

I woke up at 5 am and saw that you had moved and positions your levels to point at our levels XD Took me by surprise. Glad someone had the guts to make a firm/bold statement about how jacked up the cool pages are. Also we thank you for the publicity

now how bout helping some of the unknown creators with great creations?

i'm sure there are many people on this site with that reputation, (myself included) and having the cool pages manipulated like that is the gateway to helping the unknown creators.

If LBP2 really does have weighted ratings, then a potential support system is already in place. Though, that doesn't mean that someone who got their 1 million hearts through spam and 16 deadly jump levels won't have high rating powers too. Also, our board can be some of the toughest critics around, especially if they're good creators, so getting that happy face and heart from key people to ensure your success will still be hard won.

I really wish lbp.me for LBP1 went all the way back to '08 for activity (rating history), but I'm kinda glad it doesn't.

Well... I have new found respect for anyone who has been able to do this hi-wire act... called Cool Pages! I really do! I have newfound respect for a creators ability to get there... in particular those first times... as for myself and my good fortune... its really helped open my eyes to who and what I am... and also who's playing these 4 million levels!

Yesterday, I thought I was a darn-good creator... with a good group of levels... who's just been swallowed up in the sea of all this CREATION.
Today, I still think I'm a good creator... with a nice group of levels... but realise I'm a niche-creator... and the audience Isn't gonna come to me...even if I'm delivered to them! It's up to me to bend to them... if I want, and to what degree... and that knowledge is invaluable.

Additionally, this little experiment has proven to me that lbp.me works... delivering right players to levels... it's just a slow everyday process for most of us! Through lbp me... my Gravel level is a star rating higher, and completion and level hearting is 20% higher, funny enough creator hearting seems to be mostly consistent.:hrmf: between force-fed Cool Pages Gravel and lbpc showcase/lbp.me Gravel.

One other word of advice... if they're good, link your levels... on average the cool pages player is not stopping to perform a level search on you... If it's linked... it's getting played.

I'd really like to pay-it-forward as well... I mean Ladylyn1 deserves all the credit... I'm on page one in disbelief... I've been playing the showcase I've got a good idea of whats out there and have contacted two creators already... I can link one more without dilluting the pool too much... If you got a really good level (and I agree sry:hrmf: but it makes sense that way) I'll link you and your level and you can then do the same for someone else...2011-01-07 16:43:00

It's horrible to watch cool pages and find another copy of The Bunker picking up more hearts and better rankings than the original one.
I'm honestly thinking of flooding cool pages by republishing ALL my levels that would be cool

cant agree more..... the worst thing is that you spend alot of quality time on making a level and then some h4h or bomb survival manages to outheart/play you instantly ( i mean im not a great creator but i feel i definatley deserve more plays than those and im sure many people feel the same2011-01-08 15:29:00

Yeah I noticed that and was extremely disappointed to find that another player was getting thousands of plays that should certainly not be accredited to him.

But I like the idea ladylyn! Keeping a continuous stream of cool levels linked to more and more cool levels could keep some truly great levels on the cool pages.

:hrmf:Well my time on 'cool pages' is coming to an end... file under, "Did that really happen???" and Ladylyn1 thanks so much for the memories... it turned-out to be one heckuva Birthday present!

The creators I tried to help out... Metalhead_as, and Morris6267... kinda missed-out when the iron was most hot... through delay and missed messages... If anyone would be willing to give RUINS OF ALBION or SEARCH FOR MORE SKILLZ a boost in plays I hold a key to both and would be very much obliged... asking for them, not me... Fortune smiled on me already this year...

Hm so this is what this is all about

Well yeah thanks Ladylyn1, as gravel told me to do (thank) but I didn't really get it XD. Sooooo.... Yeah thanks I actually played your level cirque de whatever XD Looooong ago and it's a very good level! When I saw it on the cool pages again, I actually thought someone stole it somehow and published it... Was there even a need to say that?

Well um yeah thanks for doing this! I got like 5 more hearts since gravel added my orange key of skills into his level!
<-- there was no need for that.

Oh and can you add my key to your level? Or is it too late? Or... Is my level too cheap? XD (this would be a more appropriate time for the box head smiley)

I have to say..
The moment some secret material or the crown dlc-stealing was going on,
almost everyone that was in the beta swarmed on it like flies to dog....
same for grapple-races and everything else that didnt have much value.

If it wasnt for MM picks, I am sure half of those levels would not have so much plays/hearts/reviews/comments and 's

As stephany told me. the majority of the community is too gullible..
And whats going on in lbp1 w. the cool pages..
will also happen in lbp2.

It's really really sad that that will inevitably happen since you could definately tell in the BETA that Mm put so much care and attention into making the LBP2 Cool Pages
organised and generally looking fanastic and not as messy and jumbled as it did in LBP1. And it will all be ruined by bomb survivals.

Reminds me of what Centurion did way back when....I like what your doing though! Neat Idea!

I did a similar(ish) thing when I was on the 'cool pages.' I don't know if anyone can remember this, but I never really explained it fully.

During my early days of creating, I was messing around with stuff and saw these "Bomb Survivals" levels, they were reasonably new at the time and I wanted to have a go myself. So I whipped up a "Missile Survival" and published it. To my surprise, it rapidly grew in popularity. Of course, I was thrilled to have a popular level, but then the penny dropped. I was just another sheep in the flock. Nearly every other levels on the cool pages was a "bomb survival" of some kind. I felt guilty. Not only for hogging up the cool pages, but for my unoriginality.

Something had to change.

So I republished over the level, which was still on page 1, and re-named it "Everything Is Blue." It consisted solely of a solid blue room and nothing else but a cutout of my sackboy saying "Everything Is Blue."

On hindsight, I should have just deleted the level straight out, but I was a silly kid making a silly joke. I can't say it's my proudest moment as a creator, but it certainly got people noticing how flawed the cool pages system was.

I'm really stumped.
How do people find your level? It's not like there's level connoisseurs browsing recently published (only h4h's), so is there some method to get GOOD levels out there? I've tried advertising on LBPCentral and it got no replies. It seems like I can't get a level I put work into to get plays. Is the only way to get it featured to put 'Bomb Survival' in the name?

Still, Cool pages fundamentally didn't change and that's the only reason why it will continue to be a mess. Media Molecule DID NOT saw the way to put them to the next level (while they are still better than LBP1). A true step forward would have been to force a configuration on the player and a genre field on levels info when you create them so they could classify them for real. Default page should have been "Newest levels".

if things would have been done this way, you would basically have Cool level pages for each genre and most levels would reach their intended audience more easily. As an example I could leave my cool pages configuration on "platformers" by default and would be spared from survival challenges forever. When I would publish MY platformer, I would see how it fares against other platformers amongst platformer fans.

Ooh i remember, i actually made the green one ^^( i was just a immature noob creator back then, im not proud of it either :blush.
Anyways the cool levels seem to better in LBP2, but im not sure how long it will last. (i already saw ppl posting noob trophy lvls on LBP2 via lbp.me).
MM should just make the ratio between hearts/plays much more important to get on the pages, plus the most important thing: replays should NOT count as plays!!
A friend told me that MM already made replays not count as plays but im not sure.. did anyone already test this??

Very nice work! Unfortunately, LBP's cool pages are the equivalent of the internet's 4Chan. I'm afraid there isn't any hope left.
It's nice to see people try to improve it, like what you did, nonetheless!

I quite agreed with this. I hated how there is so very little variety to these pages and the overall quality of them was baaaaad.

I even started a clan once to stop this but obviously this didn't worked and it melted away as I realized I'm making enemies and finding creating to be more interesting.

If I was able to get a level done I might have been a pretty decent known creator.
Unfortunately I practiced alot but with no patience...

!!!! (*remembers that finished level that never got published)

HMMM...

A perfect fix would to reset every spammers heart count and delete all their levels. This will save confusion for new and old people and send a message to the community exploiting the system will have consequences. The problem I hate is, Mm didn't stop the spammers thus allowing people to know their names, a direction Black ops didn't go with their online so the exploiters didn't become "nerd famous". If people truly think they deserve a heart, then they can heart them again. But if any of them want to change, a reset heart counts is the perfect solution as well.

Or maybe Mm isn't that great to know how to reset a spammers heart count in their own system?
