Building a counting system?

Archive: 8 posts

I am trying to build a counting mechanism using wobble bolts but cant seem to figure out a way to make them only wobble the one direction. Basically I want to have a series of round panels that rotate one tenth of a revolution (36 degrees) cw or ccw each time I activate the switch. I need the panel to start each new revolution where the old one left off. In this way after a full revolution has been made then a switch will be triggered making the next disk along spin 36 degrees. And with clever implementation it will become a counter system that will allow me to keep track of certain events and force things to happen after a specific number of iterations. If anyone has any ideas or links to some working designs that would be fantastic!2008-11-07 00:50:00

i don't have an answer for you, and am curious to see what other people might say in response, but i'd think a better way to count stuff would be to create (with an emitter) or destroy objects, rather than rotating one. i too am looking for a way to count how many times certain events happen in a level. my best idea so far is to create some sort of 'or' switch that does not reset. so once an event happens, it moves a bit and does not reset after the event is over (or switch released). haven't quite figured out how exactly yet but it seems more immediately doable to me than your rotation idea. but who knows.2008-11-07 03:47:00

I have a rotating counter, but the device turns just barely too far, and by the end of a few rotations the numbers no longer line up correctly. I have given some thought to using an escape gear like those found inside a pendulum powered clock.

In this case I would have 10 or 20 teeth and each time a switch is triggered the wobble bolt that would controll the entry and exit palets.

. . .i'd think a better way to count stuff would be to create (with an emitter) or destroy objects. . ."
I would use an emmiter, but I am building a mini game and I would like to build somthing that shows you how many times you sucessfully achieved a desired task. Somthing the in game score can't always count. Imagine if you will attaching a counting mechanism into the tie skipping level and suddenly after you die you can see how many times you succeeded in jumping over the rope.

I gave up on making a counter with an escape gear because the game kept forcing parts of my contraption to disappear. However I have had great success with a binary counting machine. I have to iron out a few kinks but then I will post a level or image showing how it works.2008-11-15 01:30:00

this is totally possible. if your still intrested, let me know and i'll give you several ways this can be achieved depending on the task you are doing.2008-11-15 03:59:00

awesome, love to see it.

honestly, in little big planet, the possibilities on how to achieve this are possibly endless!

to truly tell you one way, i do need to know what your trying to achieve.

is it just a wheel that turns with numbers like in little big basketball?

or do you want emitters emitting numbers?

or maybe crazieness like a display that was made a long time ago... which i can't build but i'm sure a counting system could be made...

anything can be done... it will take patience and time, but it can be made.

your first post was fuzzy on what you wnated... i'm not sure if you don't know how to build a counter, or something that will make stuff happen at certain times...
