The Lord of the Rings pt. one

Archive: 9 posts

Hey, I just wanted to show off my Lord of the Rings pt. one Level.

http://lbp.me/v/vw3ecp

http://www.p2u.de/janining/Bilder/LotR.pt1.jpg

The Level is rather relaxing and I wanted to make my own Intepretation of the Story (so not really everything is exactly like in the book/movies: just for the gameplay somethings had to be changed). It's just something for the mood, and it' s my first real attempt on a Level that tells a story and isn't to hard to play (the outcome is that this one is very easy...). So, just for relaxing Moments... Best played with 1 Player.

Due to Temperature this Level is very short, two following parts are also online, jet the story is not finished (I hope I can finish it before LBP2 arrives... but there is still plenty of work to be done...).

This is my first "Level-Show-Case-thread", I hope I did everything in the right way... If not, please let me know

Hi Janining, great level!
Was really impressed, what a pretty level. I'd like to mention most of your trees, the Darkrider and and the corn field were outstanding!
Though the game lacked much in the way of platforms and all that 'typical' LBP level, it made it (for me anyhow) refreshing, and allowed me to marvel at the work gone into the game rather than having to grab and jump and dodge and fire...blahblah.
Nice work!
5 Stars.

I know this isn't a F4F, but if you fancy playing my new level 'House of the flying diggers' I'd appreciate hearing what you think.

Keep up the pretty work! Shade_seeker

Hey, I just finished playing this level with a buddy. I dressed up as Smeagol (even though he's not in this point of the story!) and my friend was Frodo.

I've played a level very similar to this recently that goes through all of the major events of LOTRO, and just like that one I have to say whilst it's cool to trail through the events of the story, there's very little in the way of actual gameplay outside of going through the dialouge which prevents it from being a great level for me. The characters were pretty decent I thought, but a lot of the design was a bit "meh", the trees at the beginning for example were a bit shoddy in my opinion. Not sure if you hit max themometer or not, but the whole thing felt a little on the short side too.

Overall I'll give you a comfortable :star::star::star: as it's certainly not a bad level by any means and with a bit more effort I feel it could be 4/5 star-worthy provided you make it longer too.

EDIT: Oops! It sounds like I'm being pretty harsh as I didn't point out much good stuff. The character designs were nice and captured the essence of LOTRO in a very LBP sort of way. I especially liked the Ringwraith and the little chase scene was pretty epic, definitely brought me back to watching the movie.

If this is a series you plan to continue, I'll have to link you to the other LOTRO levels I mentioned as I'm sure they will serve as good inspiration.

Hey UmJammerSully,

thanks for your Feedback I`ve seen some other LotR-Levels (just when part one was finished), and there is one Series I totally loved (concepts...), the Problem with playing the Levels of other Players is, that I got stuck in the Ideas of other people...so I stopped playing them, because I don't want to rob those Ideas if you know what I mean .

Yes, the Thermometer was pretty full, I think the Cornfield alone covered something like one fifth... I'm pretty new in Level Designing, so I'm just starting to learn ways to keep the Temperature cool. The other parts are improving in different ways, part three has a lot more gameplay for example and is also longer..
Maybe I have to have a Look again at the other LotR- Levels...
Thanks again for your Oppinion and playing the Level; I didn't think it was harsh in any way

No... I'd stay true to yourself. it was a very pretty level and enjoyable... my favourite part being the wraith chase to the ferry. And the shire. All is lovingly created. My least favourite would have to be the randomness of some pointbubbles... and the lack of being able to combo any of them. If I may, I'd like to point you toward some articles on thermo management here at lbpc... Specifically you really waste alot of vertices when you implant dark matter inside another object... (4 for darkmatter 4 for cutout hole) Much smarter to just shrink DM smaller to invisible and attach to outside edge of whatever. Also cutouts like the 2b cont. sign waste alot of thermo as well. And don't get me started on the emitted rain!2011-01-07 09:49:00

Hey Gravel,

yeah, you're totally right... I had a look at these great Guides for the Thermo, and now I know some more things I just didn't think about in the last months-- Still everything seems to be very complicated, sometimes you just wanna do it and don't think about the Thermometer and all those tricks...but that will improve, I promise

You think the emitted rain was much? Wait till you have a look at my emitted snow in part three of the series! Totally painfull...but it looks so nice

Thank you for all these great tipps, like I said - right now I'm creating part four of the Series and I try to absorb all these great tipps and hints to make it better and better

This was a very charming level. I genuinely enjoyed wandering through your landscape and spotting all the elements from LOTR which you recreated so beautifully. I loved the cornfield, the Hobbit holes, the Inn at Bree and your ringwraith who was awesome!

I have to agree with Gravel on both the high point and low point of the level. The chase to the ferry was brilliant but the bubble placement throughout the level was a bit random. There didn't seem to be any logic to it and where you had strings of bubbles, it wasn't possible to combo them. It's not a big deal, obviously, but it just jarred slightly in what was otherwise a lovely level to play.

I'll have to go back and play the other Parts now!

Hmm, yeah, I never gave much thought in the placement of bubbles I have to admit... I should try to change that not only in this level....
Thank you for your reply, shropshirelass
