American sports games - Higher production values?

Archive: 3 posts

In terms of sports games, I have in the past been a fan of Fifa and PES mainly, along with a few games from sports I don't follow (Tiger Woods and a couple of Cricket games). In general, I've always agreed with most people that Fifa has far better production values than PES, the whole game (excluding gameplay from this) looks and feels more like a live broadcast, it all works. PES tends to focus on gameplay more than anything, though recently Fifa has become better anyway.

Recently however, I've been watching American sports far more than English sports, resulting in me playing more American sports games, namely NHL 10/11, NBA 2K11 and Madden NFL 11. Compare these with a game like Fifa, and they blow them out the water. NBA especially has clearly had a lot of time invested in the whole idea of it being a broadcast of a game, and not to the detriment of gameplay (most importantly). Not only is the the best basketball game you can get, playing it feels like watching a match on tv. Everything from the intro video, showing the arena, mascots doing whatever, the way the teams are presented, through to the in game things, like the 'Sprite Slam Cam' or the 'Gatorade Play of the Game', which happen smoothly during the game, rather than being an afterthought at the end, contribute to this.

NHL doesn't go that far, but the HUD in that game mimics an actual NHL broadcast very closely, with all the stats popups (Faceoffs won, shots on goal, time on ice etc.) coming up during breaks in play, along with cutscenes showing standout players from the teams and how many points they have accumulated over the season). Madden is in the middle, it does feature in game advertisements, and at the end it has the after game show done by showing the player of the game sponsored by whoever, and the Dorito's crunch time play of the game.

NBA 2K11 wins the production value battle of them all, but I don't understand why American sports seem to have so much more time dedicated to sorting this kinda stuff out. NCAA 11 apparently is very good for this with the ESPN integration, but I haven't played it due to being in England, and college sports no being released here. None of the games I've mentioned suffer from the fact that more time is spent on presentation than gameplay, because they all nail the gameplay, I just don't understand why it doesn't happen for other sports. Football is a game played worldwide, basketball isn't, at least not to NBA standards, so I don't get why Fifa doesn't seem to get the same treatment as NHL or NFL, both of which are also by EA.

No idea where I'm gonna go with this now, I'm kinda just thinking it as I type, so whatever...

Yeah the NBA games has had alot of great games, even since the SNES days.
I really don't get the flak sports games get, while there's more than a few duds, there's also alot of sweet well done games.

Nice writeup dude
