Scenario Contest 1 - Mind the gap

Archive: 16 posts

Hello there. I've decided to give this contest thing a try, and decided to do this, a scenario contest. Basically, i'll be doing several of these, where each time I shall give you guys a scenario to work from. Being creative, original and fitting with the fit will definitely help you win here.

Now then, I decided to do something simple, so for the first one, your scenario is as follows:

"You are trapped in a cave, which is only lit by lamps placed in there by miners years ago. You're really close to reaching the exit, where freedom, fresh air and a nice hot meal await you. The only problem is that there's a big chasm between you and your goal. Even worse, the bottom of this big hole is blazing with fire. Quite a problem indeed.

Now then, you need to figure out a way to get to the other side of that gap. The question though is a simple one: How?"

Generally, the goal here is to build something that'll get a player from one end to the other, so they can reach the exit safely and without getting burned to a crisp.

Here's a picture of it, so you guys can see what it looks like by itself:

A few rules though when doing this task:

- no jetpacks.
- you can't unlethalize the burning floor.
- extra points for keeping with the theme of the level (a cave that used to be a mine).
- (optionally) add a reward at the end for the player that fits the scenario (like food, or a transport home, or whatever else you wish to add).
- leave a magic mouth at the end of the level telling me what you made and any other details you wish to talk about.
- and oh course, make sure that it works properly before publishing it. After all, a player must be able to cross the gap safely using what you've made, or else it doesn't count.

When you're ready to get to work on it, a templette level has been posted for you to use. This'll be where your gap-crossing creation will be tested in and placed in when finished. To find it, type "scenario contest 1 - Templette' into the search text thing.

You guys will have a week to create your gap-crossing solutions, so there should be hopefully enough time for some good ideas to come out of this. When you're finished, save the level as "scenario contest 1 - *insert your username here*'s entry", and then post that it's uploaded here, so it can be looked at by both me and everybody else. When the deadline is up, i'll leave it up to a day-long vote to see what everybody considers to be the best out of all the entries. The one with the most votes will win.

So yeah, good luck guys, and may the most creative person win!

I decided that it'd be a good idea to also do a prize of XP for the winner, so.....

The winner will recieve 50 XP from me.

I've also uploaded an example level so you can see an example of a possible way to do a gap-crossing device. It's called "scenario contest 1 - Example". Note that I don't reccomend everybody do the same thing, since that'd get boring, and I wanna see some creativity.

So anyways, good luck, and I hope you guys can be able to get some good ideas done. I may even do a compilation level of all the ideas made and utilzied after this.

okay, so we need to use YOUR cave? cause i am quite the cave maker.... and is the whole level just the crossing? we dont need to make very much of a story? and if we do use your template, can we edit it a little?2011-01-05 02:17:00

I'll answer in this order:

1.) Yeah, everybody's supposed to use the templette level for this. It's to make sure everybody is at the same level when doing their thing.
2.) Generally, yeah. It's simply the crossing of the gap to reach the exit. I wanted to keep it simple for the first scenario, so I only did that much for it.
3.) You can add a story if you wish. If it helps add to what you're doing for it, then go ahead.
4.) Yeah, you can edit it a bit, but not too much. Remember, can't unlethalize the bottom of the gap, and keep the gap/edges at least somewhat like it originally was. Small tweaks like erasing small bits of the edges and/or shaping it up a bit are ok if need-be, but for the most part keep the gap and the edges as is. Anything else is fine by me (as long as it meets the guidelines). Oh, and remember to leave notes in the form of a magic mouth at the end for me when you publish it.

Nice, another person's giving this a shot!

Hopefully more people do decide to enter, since that would mean more interesting approaches to this scenario.

Anyways, for anybody who entered or is about to enter, less than 4 days to go before the deadline, Monday at exactly 3:40 PM (I prefer to be exact and keep things on time when it comes to deadlines), so hopefully by then plenty of good entries come in by that time.

Oh, and just a reminder: Post that your level's published when ya do so, and add the name of the level in your post as well so both me and everybody else can see it. So yeah, remember to do that. :V

Sorry for the double post.

Basically, you guys have about approx. 2 days left to publish your entries. If you're still working on your entry, it'd probably be a good idea to finish it up soon.

Oh, and remember, that 50 XP prize is still up for grabs for the winner. I might even raise it up a bit depending on the number of entries.

So yeah, deadline's soon, so hopefully entries show up soon. :3

It's ok if ya can't make the deadline, give it a shot still and see if ya can't do something by then.

Anyways, about 27 hours to go until the deadline, so if you're still building your gap-crossing stuff, get it finished soon. Once the deadline hits, as long as there are at least a couple entries, all others won't be accepted. If there aren't any by then though, i'll extend the deadline by a day, so as to give you guys a chance to add finishing touches if you need to.

Anyways, it's almost time for judging (once the deadline hits), so be ready for when it's time to do that.

Impressive entry you did. I like the changes you did to make the scene look much more impressive, and the way you made it possible to cross the gap....that was a pretty creative take on it, and it even fit the theme (explosives in a mine? I'd believe it. ). Oh, and the ride to the end was also a nice touch.

If you're only the first entry, I can't wait to see what others do for their entries. But.....if nobody else enters by the deadline, you win by default, and I'll move straight to the next scenario (in a different topic).

So yeah, loved the first entry and hope that more entries show up just like it. :3

Right.....hopefully there IS competition for ya soon, or else this won't be much of a contest, am I right?

Anyways, approx. 6 hours left before the deadline, so this is a last warning to those still working on your entries. Get it done soon, so ya can enter it. Oh, and remember, type the name of the level and stuff in your post when you've published it, so it can be looked at, ok? :V

Well.......it looks like the deadline has hit.

Looks like only......one person enter. Yeesh.

Well, an entry is an entry, and as such I must give the victory to said entry. Jdawg1996, you win the prize of 50 exp. Expect it to be transferred to your thing soon.

Anyways, I should have the templette for the second scenario contest ready soon, so expect a new topic for it soon-ish. :V
